it always simultaneously makes me happy and also super mad that i can stare at an engineering problem for hours and feel totally lost, then wake up the next morning, get to work, and suddenly know what i need to do and it's done in 15 minutes.
i genuinely feel like I’m in a giant prank when people start talking about NFTs
as if any second someone’s gonna be like “punked! Of course this is an incredible fuckwit idea no one would actually take seriously!”
i find it really *really* infuriating that so many US-based tech cos do "remote" and cap it to a few time zones - if you're worried about working hours crossover, imo:
1) you're not understanding asynchrony
2) why not let the applicant decide if they can make it work?
Lyft is now sending me *push notifications* about how to “save rideshare* from shutting down in CA as if
1) it’s not their own fucking fault
2) they are not actively, themselves, choosing to shut down
just read a blog post where a tech dude unironically said that the separation of church and state was to keep the government out of the church and not the other way around so if you need me i'll be astrally projecting myself into the earth's core
possibly my least favorite type of Twitter interaction is with what i refer to as Schrodinger’s Asshole, the person who decides whether they are joking based solely on the reactions to their tweet(s)
Recently I’ve gotten some emails from recruiters noting that they want “diverse candidates like me” - this is for layered reasons a problematic approach, but also does anyone have tips for gently telling them that this is Not It?
i hate the tech mindset that’s like “if we’re getting hate and criticism that means we’re doing something right”
consider: your idea actually just sucks shit
something i'm asked sometimes is how to find open source projects to contribute to - 95% of the time i'm just solving my own problems tbh
you use loads of oss even if you don't realize it, and often the fastest way to fix a little annoyance is to just PR it in yourself!
gf is trying to tell me why i should be better abt sunscreen and instead of some nice motivation i got “if you want to look like a leather bag when you’re older that’s your journey”
My team at Microsoft is hiring for a Principal Software Engineer - you'd be working with me on core Electron engineering as well as contributing to the open source ecosystem around it. Feel free to reach out with questions about the role or my experience!
a depressing thing about working in big c++/obj-c codebases is not a single one of the nice handy editor tools works well in them
go to definition? more like go fuck yourself
🎉✨🎉✨🎉✨
Happy Node.js LTS Release Day!
$ nvm install v10.15.1
This was the first release I both prepared and promoted by myself, with help and mentorship from
@MylesBorins

for JavaScript folks who dislike C++, what specifically is the most off-putting aspect of the language? been considering why such a chasm exists between the two and how I might better help folks have fun with both 🤔
some days it feels like tech companies are in a race to the bottom for how morally uncomfortable they can make me when i think about what it'd be like to work there
took a walk around lunch today to try to improve a difficult morning and a bird literally shit on my head
sometimes you just gotta know when to give up on a day lol
Given that whether or not i spend time on a given issue is generally at my discretion, it is fascinating to me how many people do not realize that denigrating maintainers about an issue is probably the fastest way to make us choose...other issues
i keep seeing the “married women shouldn’t have male friends” bad take getting shared and while it is awful, she’s from tradwife twitter and a raging bigot and TERF so like...can we perhaps not amplify her more
university CS degrees emphasizing theory/conceptual learning and devoting comparatively far less time to frameworks/similar practical concepts is fine bordering on good
i cannot emphasize enough what a catastrophically awful idea i find this please never do this or even consider anything in the stratosphere of this oh god
we never want to make assumptions in what other people know - removing these words helps us all learn ✨ (cc
@carolstran
who has done a lot of amazing docs work on this front!)
personal pet peeve - i really hate when people use cutesy epithets for tr*mp.
calling him cheeto mussolini or whatever when we're talking about war crimes being committed is really not appropriate for the gravitas of the topic.
i should *NOT NEED* to say this but it is wildly inappropriate to 1) go dig my number out from some old resume online and 2) use it to message me unsolicited on whatsapp! come on!!
If you'd like simply to work on open source, that's also cool! Just please note that at this time i'll be prioritizing those who would most benefit as a result of our current climate.
@LouisatheLast
something i see a lot from tech people is a belief that for a particular algorithm or system to be racist it has to have been *programmed that way maliciously* which couldn't possibly convey a more aggressive misunderstanding of racism's structural nature
never ceases to amaze me how many fearless weekend coding warriors proudly proclaim they could recreate apps and app architectures they couldn't even begin to explain the technical underpinnings and necessary complexities of
every little choice we make, every day, tells people whether we are someone they are safe to be themselves around.
move through the world with that in mind, because many people do not have the luxury of giving you the benefit of the doubt.
never ceases to amaze me that vcs can tweet shit like "the sun's personality is a frame of mind" and like clockwork a whole bunch of tech people will sagely respond "ah yes,,,,,,,so wise"
i love when randos accuse open source moderators of being evil and also marxist somehow?
sir if you have read and can explain marxist ideology to me coherently i will eat my own shoes
it's very funny to me on OSS projects when an issue has absolutely no activity, a new version is released in the interim, and someone comes and comments 'still not working' on the issue
who do you think fixed it? the project's invisible maintenance gremlins?
For those who have watched me suffer at the hands of XCode and Swift of late, finally won the battle 🚀
a native Node.js module invoking a Swift function:
solved one of those bugs today where you're convinced it's directly ascended from hell but also the solution is quite terse so in the end you’re kinda satisfied but mostly just pissed about how much it wronged you
Electron is adding some support for macOS Touch ID in our upcoming v7 line, but in the meantime if you'd like to try it out you can use this native module i wrote:
feedback welcome, please let me know what you think or ways I could improve it!
a year into this job, it still blows my mind that i get to spend my days writing all my code in the open and learning things from and with people i never thought i’d meet, let alone know well 🤯
yall have already probably seen the shitty tweets so just know that for the record terfs can fuck right off into the sun and if i see a single whiff of gender critical nonsense from any of you it's an instablock.
hello
@apple
friends!
@electronjs
spotted ourselves on the platform SotU, and if you're working on Electron/Chromium compat for ARM we'd love a chance to chat with you 🙇🏻♀️
Please feel free to DM or reach out if you can!
downloaded Pajama Sam (1996 PC game i loved as a kid) for shits and giggles and was absolutely flabbergasted to discover this very real question during playthrough:
imo one (of many) reasons a lot of adults don't pursue reading more is because there's so much cultural pressure and shame around reading the "right" kinds of books - it's hard to enjoy reading if you're worried about how you'll be judged for what and why you're reading
as someone who has never used bobby pins i really underestimated how living with someone who does would have me randomly discovering them in absolutely every conceivable location
i am so very deeply tired of watching people whose lives are largely materially unaffected by politics discuss it like it's an interesting tennis match and shout down anyone who dares treat it like the life-and-death matter it is for literally millions of people
