This is why I find it funny that certain ppl in the ‘classical education movement’ believe that classical education will produce more conservatives, because it might just produce the next Karl Marx.

A line from one of my students in yesterday's Proudhon/Marx class that I keep thinking about: "Marx may have been the first socialist who ever liked Aristotle better than Plato."

Making such a powerful ally for one’s cause is probably a good thing though, just like propping up Henry VIII as ‘Defender of the Faith’ ended up working out for Rome in the 16th century

A.E Housman on how ‘classical education’ is often used as a polish: “The special effect of a classical education on the majority of those who receive it, is not to transform and beautify their inner nature, but rather to confer a certain amount of polish on their surface.”

This is my favorite brand of post. Either they read the material and are revealing that they didn’t comprehend the obvious or they didn’t read the material and are revealing that their appeal to the “Western Canon” is just a weaponized aesthetic.

An insightful essay from @Samantharhill on how Hannah Arendt’s warning about the ex-communists (who swapped ideologies but not methods) is relevant in understanding the contemporary New Right:

Al Pacino performing Shylock’s ‘Hath not a Jew eyes?’ monologue, which may be the most poignant passage in literature on the humanity of the Other, specifically the Jews. Unfortunately, it is as relevant today as it was when Shakespeare wrote it:

This lyric from that viral country song perfectly highlights the emptiness of MAGA populism where one’s anger is diverted away from the big businesses receiving excessive corporate welfare and oriented towards the poor person buying food on welfare.

An example of how they change the framing of the conversation when facing pushback: he is not being criticized for saying that ‘Christianity is the true religion’, he is being criticized for saying that other religions should be suppressed, which has never led anywhere good.

Reminder: You can go Yale, Oxford, be educated in the classics and be as gullible as Spencer Klavan. More than likely, though, he’s just playing to his reactionary audience, but I’m not sure how spreading disinformation is going to ‘Save the West’.

First, Cacciaguida was talking about rural people (w/in Tuscany) that were corrupting the City. Secondly, he goes on to say “All things that you possess, possess their death, just as you do”, which, in context, is a reminder not to idolize temporal bonds of the family and city.

There's a great scene in the Divine Comedy in which Dante's ancestor Cacciaguida explains *from Heaven* how immigration destroys cities. ("Sempre la confusion de le persone principio fu del mal de la cittade, come del vostro il cibo che s’appone")

P*s*biec may be the most dangerous person on this app. That he has become a mainstream RW voice after spreading pizzagate (even inspiring a shooting), making appeals to nazism, starting #StopTheSteal , and now giving uncritical praise to Pinochet and Franco should be a scandal.

Just in case you don’t get it, the people who oppose parents controlling the education of their own children are the enemies. It’s actually super simple.

A Hillsdale-based school in Tallahassee (near where I live) fired their principal after parents were upset after a lesson on Michelangelo's "David". Now this. Reactionaries pushing education reform don’t care that the humanities are being emptied of their substance. They only..

Probably one of the worst bad faith actors in GOP politics today. Intelligent guy, use to hate Trump, & did a 180 when he wanted power. He knows that Trump is guilty. But it doesn’t matter since he sees democracy as an obstacle to his nihilistic thirst for power.

For example, in Letter from Birmingham Jail, MLK lays claim to the Tradition by esteeming those philosophers&theologians of the past (Socrates, Augustine, Aquinas, Buber, etc.) that lend support to his civil rights vision against the traditionalist claims of the segregationists.
