SUV driver collided with me last evening. Serious knee fracture, just out of surgery, long road of rehab ahead. He didn’t see me, came out of nowhere, focused on other cars, saw a gap, went for it, hit me. Those of us on bikes are here too, will we always be invisible?
This is wonderful. This should be our only ambition in teaching our beautiful language, to be able to hold a simple conversation and to love doing so. Forget all the other stuff and focus on conversation. We spend 13 yrs studying Irish, and most of us haven’t a clue at the end.
Last Sat, I cycled the length of our beautiful island in 23 hrs:23 mins to support the powerful work of
@HandInHand_ie
, a national charity supporting families challenged by childhood cancer. Please take two minutes to make a small donation here; Thanks, C
Delighted for all GAA fans that attendance at matches is possible again, but it’s simply no longer credible to argue that what’s happening in Dublin today is safer than musicians performing to a couple of hundred people indoors. It’s not.
@meaiireland
Our national flag flies over Leinster House this evening. It’s not an adornment for false patriots wishing to intimidate and instill fear in others. Our flag is a symbol of peace, of inclusion, of a coming together of different traditions on our island. Long may we work to…
It’s the first anniversary of my incident in Moycullen that left me with a life changing injury. I’m going to attempt this to celebrate being back on my beloved bike. Thinking today of Inspector Niall Flood and his family.

This is my friend Ali, a former bookseller in Kabul. He & his wife left there in November of 2021, fearing for their lives. They now live & work in Galway. Today Ali is cycling 200km from Galway to Dublin to raise badly needed funds for his people in Kabul, people who are facing…
@RSAIreland
It was broad daylight. I was dressed exactly like this and it made no difference whatsoever to the motorist who just didn’t take the time to check if I was sharing the road with him. 20 mins later I was in an ambulance. You’re focusing on the wrong people here.
So proud of these two amazing friends of mine. Faced with a challenge that most of us will never encounter, nor even be able to understand, they responded with courage, resilience and absolute grace. And don’t they look wonderful tonight.

@RSAIreland
How cycling families dress in countries that really understand road safety.
Every time you propagate the high vis myth,
you shift the balance of power on our roads even further towards motorists and absolve them of the need to drive carefully.
It’s a difficult thing to have to say, but recognising a problem is the first step in solving it. Our capital city at night is a dangerous place, where you feel deeply concerned about your personal safety. Walk from the Spire to Stephen’s Green at 10.00pm and see for yourself.
Transport is responsible for 40% of CO2 emissions in Irl. 57% of all trips made in Irl are under 8km, 75% of all those trips are made by car. 50% of all trips under 2km are also made by car. Making active travel the easiest option for these short journeys would be transformative.
A major United Nations report has concluded in stark terms that human activity is responsible for climate change, much of which is irreversible. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says climate change is "widespread, rapid and intensifying" |
Deeply grateful to the fire crew who took care of me on the road, to the incredible ambulance crew who got me to UHG, and to all of the nurses and doctors who are a credit to their profession. I’ve experienced nothing but kindness and absolute professionalism here. Now to recover
My sister hasn’t been on a bike since childhood. Yesterday she took delivery of this superb ebike. Today she cycled 22km, enjoyed every minute and is now planning to bike to work, a round trip of 38km. Ebikes are the future.
Every radio show host, every journalist, every TV show host (including those who throw a cyclist’s helmet in a bin for fun) who seeks to portray cyclists as lower class interlopers on our national road network is culpable here. It’s about culture & mindset, & it needs to change.
Yesterday, John told
@joeliveline
about being pushed from his bike while cycling in the Dublin Mountains.
The call prompted another listener to send us the video below.
John was able to confirm he IS the cyclist in the clip and will be giving his reaction on

today.
A deeply cynical attempt to regain some credibility here. They formed part of a hate filled mob, but are now concerned about the welfare of children that were terrorised.
Deeply disappointed to see
@DubCityCouncil
taking this decision. Really thought that we were on the cusp of a vastly better capital city, where people come before cars.
Over the last 11 weeks, more than 300,000 people have experienced the traffic-free streets of Capel St & Parliament St. This weekend is the final scheduled weekend so be sure to check it out!

Hello
@DHLExpressIre

E-bikes, not cars, are the future of commuting across the world. We have yet to figure that out here in Ireland, instead we’re focusing on 1m electric cars by 2030. Taking 1m cars off the road, & replacing them with 1m other cars will not solve congested and unsafe towns & cities
Good morning all. After much reflection I have decided not to contest the next general election. Thanks to all of you who have been so supportive over the last 20 years. It’s spring time, a time for new beginnings. C
Disappointing to see
@GardaTraffic
make reference to clothing here. There is no legal requirement to wear any particular kind of clothing when cycling. Making reference to clothing creates confusion about the law and leads to victimisation of cyclists, often in court.
While on patrol, Naas Roads Policing observed this pedal cyclist in dark clothing with no front or rear lights. FCPN issued.
Remember, if you are cycling on public roads during 'lighting-up time', you must have lights on your bike.

Parents who work hard all of their lives and pay significant taxes on their earnings should not be subjected to additional taxes when choosing to support their children in whatever way they see fit. There’s no justice in this proposal and it won’t be supported.
Thanks to Minister

for resisting calls to introduce a mandatory helmet law for cyclists. Let’s focus the debate on the things that will really make cycling safe and not the things that will discourage it.

It’s time to put in place specially trained Gardai who will adjudicate expertly on road traffic violations using video evidence submitted via an online portal. This is my video evidence (local CCTV) and our DPP has decided it’s not sufficient to secure a prosecution.

The driver of this

bus 39A decided it was perfectly acceptable to pass dangerously close to me in a space that I supposedly share with him. He then proceeded to shout out his window telling me to get off the road.
This is the victim blaming nonsense being directed at our children by

A commitment by our incoming government to massively increase spending on cycling/walking infrastructure is one of the most positive outcomes of our negotiations. Let’s have a look at this map of European cycling infrastructure in 5 yrs time and see some real impact on our island
A very simple “Thank You” to the good people
@DubCityCouncil
for making the bike ride from Heuston Station to Leinster House a much more enjoyable experience. Keep up the good work.
Had a lot of respect for you as a broadcaster
@MauraDerrane
until you chose to vilify some of our most vulnerable road users on

last night. 15 cyclists died on our roads last year, 10 of them on rural roads & you chose to deliberately undermine the safety of many more.

Perhaps it’s time to update the history curriculum in Irish schools to include a chapter on terrorism on our island. These superb sportswomen made us proud last night, but minutes later saw nothing wrong with celebrating a terrorist organisation in song. Not their fault, ours?

I travelled to Dublin City centre this week, last week, & the week before on a train and then either a bike/bus. It’s not difficult. 1000’s of people do it every day. Why make the case that it’s somehow impossible to do, unless you sit in a steel box with a sofa & 2 armchairs?

Behind the public face of

In Ireland 50% of all trips under 2 km are made by car.
64,000 people live within a ten min bike ride from Galway city centre.
Sound advice here from the

Of course if

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald says she has no confidence in the Garda Commissioner Drew Harris or the Minister for Justice Helen McEntee following last night riots in Dublin city centre.
Absolute bunkum. If we revert to pre-pandemic levels of office based workers, we will have done our people, our families and our communities a major disservice.
And we wonder why a culture of impunity exists out there on our roads? You can deliberately drive into a cyclist, fail to make contact with him, drive into him again, this time knocking him to the ground…..and get a suspended sentence.
I’ll reword this for
@IrishTimes
.
“The planned installation of bollards from Howth to Sutton to segregate the cycle lane from traffic will prevent on-street parking for several kilometres, including illegal on-street parking in front of the Victorian church.”

This idea is so poorly thought out. What we need in Dublin, Galway and all of our cities are dedicated bus corridors which facilitate rapid and reliable bus services. Putting cars into those corridors would be an unmitigated disaster and would set us back decades.

Not the Netherlands, not Finland, but Galway, where young students spent a summer on their bikes and decided to stay on them when going back to school. This could be every Irish school if we were serious about safe spaces on our roads.
A free press, not one fearing litigation at every turn, is essential to the proper functioning of our democracy. I see a pattern developing here, and yes, it is troubling.
I have to say that Microsoft Teams and Outlook are the ugliest and most impenetrably unusable platforms that I have ever encountered in the world of computing. Nothing else comes close.
Received this photo just now from a good friend living in Gort, Co. Galway. He now has fibre to his front door and this is his broadband speed. It matches that available in most global cities. This level of service will transform how we live and work in rural Ireland.
From recent experience of engaging with our health services, setting aside the excellent care that I received, I was aghast with the outdated and hugely inefficient record keeping associated with my care. Every appointment was notified by a letter in the post and I spent hours…

Appallingly ill-conceived and deliberately divisive tweet from our national Garda Traffic Unit. Both poll options are illegal, yet the person in charge of this Twitter account seems to think there is some warped merit in deciding which illegal action is more dangerous.

This isn't coincidence, but an outcome of a system that prioritizes humans over cars.

@eamonryan

are right to propose massively increased investment in cycling infrastructure across all of our towns and cities. If we learn nothing from this crisis and revert to car clogged streets, we will do our children a shameful disservice.
"If you want people to cycle, the whole journey from A to B has to be good. That is why it is important to consider infrastructure, parking and behaviour together—you cannot deal with them separately."
Lessons from Amsterdam—a city powered by cycling:
The average car is parked 92% of the time. 86% of a car’s fuel never reaches the wheels. The lifetime cost of owning an Opel Corsa is €599,082. The societal cost of motorised road transport to the EU alone is €800bn per annum.
