Thrilled to see IN A GROVE as one of @nytimesmusic 's best classical albums of 2023! Thanks so much to Joshua Barone for his thoughtful writeup, and to @metroensemble and In a Circle records for supporting the project.

My lukewarm take this morning is that classical music needs to reckon with the fact that the computer has rendered virtuosity for its own sake uninteresting (if it ever was), and we should stop applauding people for playing things that are hard but have little musical value.

I like being in a group chat with my composer friends because I receive 90-second videos demonstrating what it sounds like when you stick a piece of putty to a piano string and then put a quarter on top of the putty

Random thought: Wouldn't it make sense to have (at least) three music pulitzers: one for classical, one for popular music, and one for jazz? There's like 8 pulitzers for books, so why not? It would solve a lot of problems of judging such disparate art in one category.

COMPOSERS: "premier": first in importance, order, or position; leading. "premiere": the first performance of a musical or theatrical work or the first showing of a movie. It's almost 2019, learn the difference.

A strange thing about our field is that you can label an abstract musical composition with a title and it's assumed by everyone else, including scholars, that that composition is really "about" that subject.

at my obsession with practicality. But at the same time, the way Sam talks, his straight-up hostility here is so endemic to the 'hazing' culture that is too dominant in the orchestral world, and it's a top-down problem—frankly, this shit is bullying, and leaders shouldn't...

Composers are treated not as humans but as businesses—publishers, artists, and editors; it's a nearly impossible goal and one that demands a maximally homogenized product. It's drilled into our heads to never take a risk.

My final comment re: Discourse: Last night I saw a performance of R. Schumann's Piano 4tet wherein the cellist has to retune their C string mid-performance down to B-flat. This is a crazier ask than most contemporary rep. Composers now just want the benefit of the doubt RS gets.

In my experience as both a teacher and composer, composers are actually terrified of wasting orchestral musicians' time. We are fully aware of the rarity of an orchestral commission or performance and want to make the most of it. I've had arts admins and conductors laugh...
