For ages, people told me AI safety and AI consciousness were unrelated – and it largely made sense to me. Both key questions for particular purposes/groups, but no need to jumble them up. I’m now not so sure. There’s a longer piece brewing, but here’s where I’m at so far. 🧵

Aidan defines conscious behaviour in a later reply as those "similar to behaviors I exhibit when I experience qualia". Dangerously anthropocentric. Examples like dogs and pigs reinforce this: it's their Aidan-like behaviour that makes him credit them as conscious. The thread
i call an entity conscious if it produces conscious behavior. humans say they’re conscious, that they feel, and i trust them. my dog winces if she gets stung by a bee. pigs oink happily with loved ones. they all produce conscious behavior; therefore they’re conscious

happy friday – i am publishing a new post today! (co-authored with @algekalipso and cross-posted to https://t.co/4tYKUM6yDE) on something called the "fractional Fourier transform", and its relationship to subjective experience.

Here's what I've been talking about for a year but only got it to work last night: A graph analysis system that allows you to project nodes into a 4D space (with color as the 4th dimension) where the dimensions correspond to eigenvectors of the graph's Laplacian and then

If panpsychists claim that "everything is conscious", how do they argue rocks aren't conscious or computers aren't conscious? (often in pretty dismissive, disparaging tones) Fair question - see attempt at a fair explanation in QP...
@moreisdifferent Ah, nice analogy. I think I see where you're coming from. Let me have a go at explaining why that doesn't reflect Goffian panpsychism. It's a question that comes up a lot, perhaps because it's fiddly to set out. Paging @Philip_Goff to correct me... {big breath} Building out from

Nice thread about anaesthesia & consciousness. Might be right! But the main counterargument isn't mentioned... Just because general anaesthetics switch off consciousness reversibly doesn't mean "anaesthetic mechanisms = consciousness mechanisms" Various other mechanisms can do
Why is anesthesia our best test for consciousness? ✅ Reversible - consciousness off, then back on ✅ Reproducible - works every time ✅ Universal - works across species (plants too) ✅ Measurable - specific molecules, doses, timing ✅ Agreed upon - no one disputes the phenomenon

Are we gonna live to see @davidchalmers42 fading qualia thought experiment become a lab experiment? Wonder if people's intuitions about it will shift as we get closer to a viable test (when the Turing Test was a fantasy, quite a few were happy with it as a consciousness
Scientists from the University of Massachusetts have created artificial neurons that can communicate with human cells, at least in a petri dish. Image Credit: Jun Yao They created the neurons from proteins that are spun by bacteria into thin wire-like threads. They then hooked

"deterministic" is such a clean idea in philosophy and physics, shame it breaks down so much in the messy world of the real, must try harder
Yesterday, I posted that large language models are non-deterministic, and people went bonkers. People called me stupid, asked me to go back to school, and used so many other names I can't remember. I had the crème de la crème of this site come after me. Today, I want to

Fascinating post - I recommend @RogerThisdell as a top thinker on meditative states, both entering them and learning from them. Puzzles around memory and inference abound in any studies of consciousness, but I share Roger's belief in the value of deep thoughtful phenomenology
8th JHANA, METACOGNITION, THE HARD PROBLEM & PROTO-QUALIA 💡✍️ 8th Jhana 'neither perception nor non perception' is a very important state and I think holds one of the keys to resolving the hard problem of consciousness; namely because it suggests, what I call, 'proto-qualia'.

And a practical post to the one just reposted from Anthropic... What research topic to work on? Something without a (current) training dataset ... or where current datasets (eg large corpuses of text, maths, science) are largely orthogonal to what you're trying to achieve ...
This will age poorly. I largely have an optimistic view of LLMs; I use multiple LLM tools daily, and I don't think the LLM tech stack is a bubble—it will create a lot of value. I disagree that the length of tasks that LLMs can do has been doubling every 7 months. There are tasks

"emotion in a bottle" via programmable psychedelics... curious to read more research on this @algekalipso @QualiaRI @qualiacomputer
1/ It feels surreal to announce completion of the first human trial in the development of our neurotech platform for designing mental states, from the molecular level. Human experience is now programmable. A🧵on the sequel to psychedelics & the first new "emotion in a bottle."

Waymo is even safer than suggested by its ~5x lower crash rate. If every car was a Waymo, it's reasonable to expect it would eliminate ~97% of crashes in operational cities. The tech is truly a miracle, and will only improve.
@binarybits @chi_t_williams Is it worth trying to estimate how low crash rates would be if all cars were Waymos? One crude way is just to count the accidents where the Waymo was at fault (although this of course is fraught). From reading your post it seem like of the 45 crashes in the

The "quantum underground" is a great phrase Orch-OR / evidence has improved a lot on quantum effects in brain function. The bigger challenge is linking enough micro activity (where it's not "wet&noisy") together to map to the apparent brain-module level of our consciousness.
Thanks. It’s not wet and noisy in the aromatic rings of organic aromatic rings, the essence of life chemistry. This is where anesthesia acts to selectively block consciousness, and supports quantum optical states, coherence, superposition and state reduction. It’s a

Today's blog post: The Social Semi-Solution to the Problem of AI consciousness Tenuous consciousness science will bend to support socially motivated reasoning about the consciousness, or not, of AI systems. We will come to think we know, even if we don't know. Link in comments

There is a lot of talk these days about AI and its potential to create a K-shaped economy. This chart is a small reminder that we have been in a K-shaped economy since the 1960s when we stopped making things. @WorkWhileAI @USDOL . Time to build things again!.

This idea of consciousness being "quantum" causes a lot of confusion. We need to remember that quantum physics is a MODEL of how reality works. It's an approximation to what really exists. Note that this applies no matter what your metaphysical viewpoint is. If you are an
