Thank you to my colleagues at ACSM for selecting me for this incredible honor. I am excited to celebrate this evening with my family, colleagues, and Teachers College, Columbia University students and alums.
To maximize the training effects on VO2max, long-interval (≥2min), high-volume (≥15min) and moderate to long-term (≥4-12weeks) HIIT are recommended. PubMed - NCBI
Cognitive bias (Dunning-Kruger Effect): the less you know, the less able you are to recognize how little you know. For the highly skilled, the opposite is true: The more you know, the more likely you are to see how little you know.
Too much desk time for me. Time for a quick activity break. If you get up and move around throughout the day you can improve focus and reduce risks of chronic diseases

My students are so excited about my upcoming sabbatical, because they think I work too hard. They even clapped at the end of class. Alas, I already have so many projects planned that a sabbatical is unlikely to fix the problem 😉
Hi friends, I expect to have a full time job for a lab coordinator open soon. I am looking for an exercise physiologist with clinical/applied exercise lab experience to coordinate a clinic and research. Private message me if you are interested. Pls retweet.

housecleaning! This doctoral fellowship bought me a cute little Macintosh SE computer — transforming the work from handwriting and typewriter. That was very exciting. Is this the equivalent to walking 5 miles to school in the snow?😁
It is important when we prescribe exercise to encourage daily activity as well as exercise. The message of “do something” is a start, but relaying the message of progressing toward intentional exercise in addition to daily physical activities is optimal as
@ACSMNews
recommends.
Engaging in 'structured exercise' has beneficial metabolic effects far beyond those of just incidental activity. Public health messages of 'just taking the stairs' or 'walking to the next bus stop' need to ensure they are not selling ppl short on real benefits of actual exercise!
2/It is time to move away from prescribing exercise and PA solely from the physiological medical model but to encompass all aspects of Kinesiology in focusing on what matters to the individual and their goals, rather than imposing what we think is “best”
Zoom classes are hard for my 94 yr old mother in law to understand. Husband: “Carol is upstairs teaching.”
Mom: “Glad she can continue with her students and classes...how many students were upstairs??..in one of the bedrooms?”
Question: Why is Dr. Birx called “Deborah”, while Anthony Fauci is called “Doctor” when both are MD’s? Both deserve to be called “doctor” and not their first names!

Exercise is Medicine, but is it REALLY?
Study shows that:
- 67% of medical students are NOT comfortable writing an exercise prescription
- 57% did not know how much resistance training is recommended.

This is an Important paper! I am going to incorporate this topic into my course syllabi as I continue to consider how to disrupt the “hidden curriculum” and have students read and discuss biases and how this can affect their professional practices in health and fitness.
ACSM is saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Barbara Drinkwater. Dr. Drinkwater was a true pioneer in the field and made history when she was elected as the first female President of ACSM. Her contributions will affect generations to come.

The entire editorial board of the Elsevier-owned Journal of Informetrics resigned Thursday in protest over high open-access fees, restricted access to citation data and commercial control of scholarly work.
we have not paid much attention to the role of enjoyment in adherence to exercise. It is mentioned in the

guidelines but think not often put jnto practice
Published over 30 y ago and stated that feelings of enjoyment are more important for continued participation rather beliefs in the health benefits. Have we made progress? Discuss.

Why do people “reply all” to requests for meetings? STOP! Reply to the the sender only and they will sort it out. I do not need to know everyone’s schedules or have a meeting to set up a meeting. My mailbox is stuffed and it is easy to miss seeing important emails.

shows confidence and power. Everyone should be able to move easily without wearing shoes that damage their bodies. Sneakers are a

It is a positive example for a woman candidate to wear sneakers instead of heels, choosing comfort over conformity. Yet I still hope for the day when women's attire is no longer scrutinized.

One of the hardest parts of being a faculty member is when your doctoral mentees struggle financially& they have to take on additional work. then their dissertation progress slows to a tickle and they can’t take advantage of that protected time “full support” doc fellowship
I have a 20+ years of a devoted

practice that never gets easier & frequently seems unpleasant . I wonder why some of us persist in (and love) doing hard exercise day after day while to others it is intolerable. What determines our preferences?
@chrisemdin
Couldn’t agree more! I have instituted flexible deadlines for a while and most students get their work done “on time” or within a day or two. It helps a lot to ease stress. I check in with those who are more than a couple of days late to make sure they are ok and offer support
PAGAC 2018: lots of ways to benefit from PA. There is no threshold for health benefits: Even a little MVPA is good, more is better, and replacing sedentary time with light activity is also beneficial.

Disheartened that as much as we think we have made strides in equality for women it is clear today that not so much has changed. Experiences of women are discounted while masculine bullying behavior is rewarded and admired.
