1) For the past 4 years, we've been putting blood, sweat and tears into an 8-part audio documentary (podcast) about history of the NYPD.
I'm honored to report that
@TribecaAudio
,
@CrookedMedia
and
@WonderyMedia
will help us share it with world this June!
As
@nyu_journalism
faculty-I'm noting that:
Here is a student journalist who appears to have been pepper sprayed by the NYPD
and is NOT being cared for or protected by:
1. The NYPD
2. NYU administrators b/c they invited NYPD
3. Campus "safety" b/c they worked w/NYPD
One of the people NYPD maced last night is a photojournalist for NYU’s student paper, Washington Square News.
Photo shared with me by
@Gabe_Vascon
, a journalism student at NYU.
Some folks be acting like if the GOP does something illegal, the constitution will become sentient, walk out of the archives and physically detain Trump with no help needed from human beings. Lol
"Amendment 4 passes in Florida, restoring voting rights to 1.4 million people with past convictions. The largest expansion in voting rights since the Voting Rights Act has been enacted." !!!! ✊🏾✊🏾
Dear liberal friends. If you notice that the emerging Biden-Harris administration harkens back to what has not worked before, I just want you to know that it is okay to call this out and begin organizing against it. In fact, it is necessary.
When you have to rely on changing one politician’s mind to protect voting rights and “save your democracy,” your democracy has already failed or was never real to start out with.
The morning I watched that tape,my whole body & self was destroyed w/ grief and pain. I cried like a baby w/ fury & couldn’t work the rest of the day. I was mad at the sun for shining.
It’s amazing how much this verdict - the best this system can do - doesn’t heal any of that.
To all my
@SceneOnRadio
Seeing White and Uncivil people THANK YOU for learning with us and for doing all the work you’ve been doing. We got some things cooking for y’all too.
The fact that an election between a racist, super spreader, bankrupt, veteran-shaming, failed president, and the other option is this close is a profound argument against American greatness.
When journalists say that "the economy is doing well "without discussing how standard measures of the economy fail to capture the struggles and experiences of most Americans, we are participating in propaganda.
Let me say this. The concept of "listening" as applied to the leaders of large organizations and their workers is one of the most misunderstood and depoliticizing concepts out here - with race, gender and many other areas of social justice.
There really is an extremely strong argument for journalists to describe police using terms other than "law enforcement." This term just doesn't meet the standards of empirical reality.
We must acknowledge that there are moments when rage and refusal to accept are the most appropriate, reasonable, and pragmatic approaches. Otherwise, we're requiring folks to calmly accept the unacceptable and unreasonable.
Have you ever had that feeling of "how in the hell did I never hear of this before?"
My work brings me that feeling at least once per hour.
Major reworkings of how I understood what has happened before and therefore what is I believe is possible.
This is why I love history.
The idea of leaders "listening" or having a sit-down also invites us into the ahistorical delusion that injustice results from the ignorance of leaders (rather than their priorities and class interests) and that transformative change happens because leaders willingly make it so.
Good morning.
"We're going to fight racism not with racism, but we're going to fight with solidarity. We say we're not going to fight capitalism with black capitalism, but we're going to fight it with socialism."
- Fred Hampton
I sincerely hope that those most impacted by this feel some relief.
And I hope all of us feel more committed to the radical struggle necessary to eliminate the conditions that make police seem necessary and to build something else.
I don't know who needs to hear this but "How did we get so polarized?" is a poorly thought out and problematic question that folk need to stop asking that way. Why? Start with the assumptions built into "we" and "get."
When I agreed to host intercepted podcast we knew this was the crucial time to produce a rare conversation with iconic geographer & foundational abolitionist thinker
Ruth Wilson Gilmore.
But we were still blown away by the range, and precision of her visionary urgent analysis
This week on
@intercepted
,
@catchatweetdown
hosts a special two part conversation. Ruth Wilson Gilmore makes the case for police and prison abolition.
When we say "x is racist" I wonder if the most confusing word is "is."
Saying "is racist" seems to invite us into strange convos or about folks psychology or their "hearts."
Saying "supports/creates" (laws, policies representations etc.) invites us to consider actions & impact
I don't know what happened to Josuha Brown. But I know that his Black life is worth more than this strange, incoherent story. We need a real investigation and explanation of his murder. And I don't trust
@DallasPD
to give us that.
On Monday I early voted for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris among others. Nice to have that out of the way. I look forward to January when they take office and we can all reunify around attacking their severely limited conception of justice and building something better
1) I'm seeing many center leaning liberal friends, white & otherwise realizing in this moment that they have misunderstood the scale of problems of policing & racial justice & overestimated the effectiveness of "police reform." Our movements should welcome this learning BUT
Whatever rights POC's, women, queer folks, people with disabilities have earned. We didn't earn those because leaders learned through dialogue what was wrong. Instead, the historical record is clear. Dominant institutions were FORCED to do things they didn't want to do.
Man forging check to get groceries in a crisis = "criminal"
People damaging property to express justified rage + people taking property to survive = "looters"
Corporations that starve economy through tax cuts and 500 billion dollar bailouts = "Corporate heroes"
This is stressful but also interesting to see what different folk’s investments in this verdict are.
Unfortunately far too many folks are looking to this verdict to legitimate or redeem this system so they can hold on to some version of their belief in it.
I'm hearing some media discuss VP Harris's Guatemala trip as an effort to get to the "roots" of migration. That's important. But of course, poverty & corruption are not roots, they are fruits of deeper phenomena including a long history of U.S. Intervention in Guatemala.
I've noticed that when I tell wise mentors things they already know they rarely say "I know." Instead, they say things like "mmm say more," or "yeah, what's your take?" or if they 're bored "mmm" & then ask me a question they are interested in. I'm trying to learn to do this.
I'm beyond excited to share the news that our first child Eniola Wangari Kumanyika was born 1 week ago on June 22nd!! Saadiqa is already an amazing mother & is recovering well during this equally intense phase. And I’m deep into the diaper, swaddle, & 1.3 hours of sleep life.
I would like to personally everyone who got something out of Seeing White to check out the other seasons of Scene On Radio - including Season 4 which I'm co-hosting.
Thank you for listening and for all of the other forms of study and solidarity that you all are engaging in.
To workers at various organizations. Be crystal clear. Our struggle against various forms of oppression and for fair working conditions is not a "dialogue" it is a power struggle.
I promised loved ones that I would temporarily stop making richly produced narrative political podcasts and attend to other areas of my life.
But I am sneaking out one tiny (BIG IMPORTANT) little podcast ep coming out later today.
Then break. I promise.
The concept of leaders "listening" in corporate or corporate like organizations is almost always applied to defang power struggles by presenting them as a "dialogues."
NEW PROJECT:
“Untitled History of Policing Project,” hosted by Peabody Award winner Chenjerai Kumanyika that will provide a narrative history of the police in American popular culture.

Skeletor got off easy on the rose garden question. These fools was walking around having a COVID orgy and now we here talking “confidence in the American people”
Black People: Our communities are like war zones because of poverty, neglect and state terror.
CNN: "This is like a war zone because people are stealing"
At least once a day, I get an email from a white person who describes being transformed by
@Uncivil
or Seeing White & then explains why they think something other than radical struggle & profound structural transformation is the solution. Thanks 4 listening & also u didn't get it
From my vantage point, only folks who have been working & studying in the traditions of prison & police abolition fully grasp the widespread implications of this ongoing struggle. This is not a broken system folks. It is a system that is working as intended.
A half-dozen NYPD officers said in sworn statements that a commander instructed them to target black people and Latino people for minor offenses in the subway. They were told to think of white and Asian people as “soft targets," the officers say.
A lot of people tell me that our podcast
@SceneOnRadio
makes them realize how much they didn't get in their K-12 education. If you feel that way just wait until tomorrow's episode. 😮
"Cutting the Philadelphia police dept in half, just the police department would close the projected revenue gap and add 41 million dollars to our city budget."
- Awesome & clarifying presentation by
@BrittanyA___
and campaign for a just Philly budget
Yes it is disturbing to see the percentage of Black and Latino men that voted for Trump. Lessons for organizers for sure.
But you are out of your mind if your take is to blame this on Black folks and Latinos.
You really did miss the whole white point.
Sooo much work goes into serious narrative audio journalism. But since so many places that produce them have become content factories, it feels like there’s too little space to appreciate, build community, reflect, support impacted folks etc.
If you feel like it is important to respect the dignity of your vanquished opponents and to salvage some sense of civility during this polarized period of American history, unfollow me now. 😂😀
I plan to recognize this occasion in the least respectful and civilized manner.
1) Aight y’all. Here goes. I’m making a list of the next few narrative podcasts I’m going to listen to and I’m humbly asking for suggestions - fully knowing that more great stuff than I have time to listen to will likely come in. Please see the next tweet
Given recent developments, I'm sharing this guide to understanding Abolitionist vs. Celebrity-led ‘Bipartisan’ Criminal Justice Reform that I've been working on for my forthcoming book. It's very much a work in progress. Let me know if you find it helpful.
It is an exhilarating feeling to be able to run a 9 minute mile while pushing a stroller. Eniola and I saw several people experiencing that feeling as they flew past us while we were completing our 30 minute mile on our daily cardio walk. 😀

Well folks, I think it’s time to settle an important matter: what is the most ignant candy?
Since we’ll be using the irrefutable science of Twitter polling to end all debate, let’s first select some candidates.
I’ll start with 1
Fun dip - just sugar with a sugar stick
Yes as a Black man I am aware that this could happen to me. I've lived with that for most of my life.
But I'm not outraged "because it can happen to me." I'm outraged because it is evil, totally unacceptable, racist murder. Whoever it happens to.

A significant part of what I aim to reveal and destroy with my podcasts is the liberal whiteness that allows so-called progressives in NY & elsewhere to casually dismiss Bloomberg’s oppressive effects on vulnerable people because they feel he has made life good for them.
2) We also need you to be public about what precisely shifted in your understanding. Being public about your learning and being accountable is part of restoration.
Our students pay a lot of money and acquire lifelong, life changing debt to attend these universities.
The least we can do is listen to them when they say how they don't want their tuition dollars spent.

I need the ENTIRE Internet to tune into our Zoom event & hear directly from Amazon workers:
1. How Amazon is treating them
2. How they are fighting back
3. How you can help!
Please join us Wednesdaand share!
ZOOM LINK: HERE
I want you all to understand that my inbox is filled with offers from organizations who want me to come have a charming chat with them about race - INSTEAD of being accountable to their own workers and the communities that they affect.
Apology:
Earlier I suggested the GOP would "shit out" something more putrid in future elections.
This poorly chosen metaphor compared GOP politics to fecal matter
This was unfair to fecal matter & does not reflect my heart. Unlike the GOP, fecal matter has done nothing wrong
I’ve delayed posting about this podcast for a couple of days because I cant put together the words to express how Incredible it is!!
I keep stopping to send it to more people. Just like listen. And shout out to the whole team that made it.
When I say anti-black & anti-poor violence and repression IS the police doing their job, because those are higher priorities than black life, you will disagree and tell me I'm being cynical.
Then Kenosha police will disagree with you and say the police were just doing their jobs
Since so many of you have been so supportive of our journey into parenthood and my journey into fatherhood I'm beyond excited to share the news that our daughter is here!
Welcome, Eniola Wangari Kumanyika born 1 week...

@uncivilshow
we try to never use the phrase “freed slaves.” Even though it is quicker to write. But whose perspective is that? “Slave” isnt folks central identity. “Freed” is also inaccurate if u know history. This might seem small but it had a big impact on our stories.
I'm proud to announce that I WON the 2020 Ironman Florida Triathlon!
The lamestream media, gay leftists, Blacks and Mike Birbiglia(
@birbigs
) are trying to deny my victory. Ignore them. Spread the news.
If student loan debt has affected your health, work, financial status, credit in any negative way please share your story here.
This is not your personal "financial literacy" problem.
This is collective exploitation.
Stop the shame by sharing.
How dare you
@Amazon
.
Is firing & threatening Black workers at JFK8, Shakopee warehouses solidarity?
Is union-busting solidarity?
Are COVID positive warehouses & stealing sick leave time solidarity?
Spare us the social media propaganda. Everyone knows you are full of shit
Amazon stands in solidarity with the Black community — we remain steadfast in our support for our employees, customers, partners, and the communities where they live and work. And we stand in support of organizations that are making a difference.
In all of our revelry, there are real Trump supporters who are experiencing pain and hurt that their candidate has lost. Please don’t forget to take moment to consider those feelings - and then laugh at them. 😀
Again I’m not panicking but this process has definitely shown me:
1. It’s very hard for liberals to conceive of GOP violating court rulings - until they do.
2. Liberals are really stubborn in their belief that folks won’t break rules - until they do.
