Thread: Pumped storage seems to be all the rage for "firming" renewables. This ran through my head last night and I got thinking, what's the scale required? /1

This is something that @Ember421 and I touched on in a conversation last year. Wind, particularly offshore, isn't getting cheaper, despite claims from advocates. The price per MWh for offshore wind in Nova Scotia is pegged at $240/MWh for example. This is unlike PV, which

Another fantastic thread from Seaver that should prompt some introspection.
It’s time for folks working on climate + clean energy to get real about China, climate and clean energy techs. People want a fast energy transition but also talk about one that's fair + just. The prevailing selective discourse re: China risks a future with neither. New by me: 🧵

I can see this being reasonably viable for day-to-day in temperate climates with good year-round solar exposure, but there's no economic case for trying to store fall solar generation in places like Ontario, to use it in December/January/February where its output is 17% of its

Interesting article on bat interactions (and considerable deaths) with wind turbines and what has been done (curtailment) and is looking at being done (smart curtailment) to reduce these occurrences. As many of these species of bat are now endangered, pressure is on to find a

The lumping of wind, solar, bio and hydro together as "renewables" while each thermal source is placed by itself is disingenuous and drives me batshit. In 2024, global power generation by source, highest to lowest: Coal: 34.4% Gas: 22.0% Hydro: 14.3% Nuclear: 9.0% Wind: 8.1%
Take that, fossil fuels! 🥊🥊🥊 Did you know that here in Australia, our main energy grid is already powered by more than 40% renewable energy? So let’s keep at it! 💚💚💚

Some news sources are reporting that Brookfield, as a dark horse and new entrant in the race, has won the VC Summer development contract with the main factor being paying down $2.7B of an existing $3.6B obligation Santee cooper has on the site and sharing ownership and power.
