Build clean power + electrify⚡️ No need for fossil fuels! Global insights Programme Director
@EmberClimate
. Electricity analyst since 2000, still learning;)
This graphic is insane..
Roman Abramovichs yacht alone apparently has more CO2 emissions than the total footprint of any billionaire, except Roman himself 🤯
OUT TODAY: Our research shows coal's collapse in Europe in first half of 2020...
Big numbers! Portugal -95%, Spain -58%, Netherlands -55%, Austria -54%, Greece: -48%, Ireland -47%, Romania -40%, Germany -39%, Italy -36%.
Whoop, I'm so happy this amazing graphic made it into the IPCC synthesis report💪
Solar and wind are the 2 most impactful and cheapest tools in our toolbox...
Agrivoltaics is amazing-- it's completely changed the narrative on "solar is a waste of productive land".
Well done to all that've helped at every level to trial and communicate this. Except for the person that decided to call it "agrivoltaics"🙅♀️
20 years ago today, I started my first job as an electricity analyst.
My job was to plan the day-ahead running for 8 coal plants.
Wind+solar was 0.3% of UK electricity.
Today, all 8 coal plants are closed.
Wind+solar generate 33% of our electricity.
How things change!
LEDs convert 40-60% of electricity into light.
EVs convert c.80% of electricity into motion.
Heat pumps are like magic - they don't create heat, they harvest heat from the outside air, so they can exceed 100% "efficiency".

World Energy Outlook 2023 is out now! 🚨
Our analysis shows the energy world is set to change significantly by 2030, based on today’s policy settings alone. But stronger efforts will be needed to keep 1.5 °C in reach.

German coal generation is the lowest since 1959.
But the best is yet to come... the wind and solar boom have wiped out hard coal already and brown coal is next, ensuring big CO2 falls this decade.
Germany was too reliant on coal for too long. That era is coming to an end ♥️
SUNDAY THREAD:
This week the IEA updated their groundbreaking 1.5 degree Net Zero report. I was lucky enough to be a peer reviewer, and I want to explain in my own words what I think it means..
Yes we can still keep to 1.5 degrees! Were you ready to give up? So many people were
Global renewable power is set for another year of record growth in 2022, adding 320 gigawatts of new capacity as governments take advantage of renewables' energy security & climate benefits
The largest growth is in China, EU & Latin America.

10% of the world's electricity came from solar and wind in 2021, up from 5% in 2015.
And that's not just in a handful of rich countries.. over 50 countries have >10% of their electricity from solar and wind..
The end of new coal is nigh.
Coal power investment outside China is now nearly zero. Without this collapse, we were facing scenarios of 4+ degrees of warming.
Amazing campaigning, friends💪
Awesome new
@IEA
flagship report out on renewables.
Here's what I found most interesting...
1. The renewables forecast was upgraded by 33%💪
---- 90% from China, due to more certainty on their renewables strategy
---- 90% from solar, as boom continues to surprise
We just released our updated

It shows the path to limiting global warming to 1.5 °C has narrowed. But record clean energy growth is keeping it open.

What is interesting in the
@IEA
's flagship electricity report out today? LOTS 🧵
Peaking China. More certainty that China's coal generation has peaked in 2023 and will begin to fall in 2024 and beyond..
The UK's transition off coal power is almost complete.
The UK's transition off gas power is now beginning..
Gas collapsed this year, and coal is near-zero, so as more wind is built this year and next year...
Gas will only fall fall fall
RIP UK's gas bridge, 2016-2019.
Steel electrification is gonna be huge..
"They revealed
🟢Iron ore is converted to metallic iron using electrolysis, removing oxygen at low temperature, removing the need to use coal.
🟢A pilot plant is now setting up."
Putin's war didn't start in February.
It started in summer 2021, as he started starving Europe of gas. Putin created a European gas crisis. He did this to blackmail Europe into silence on Ukraine.
He never bet Europe could do without Russian gas. We must show him we can💪
Yesterday's IEA Net Zero report gave 4 key milestones for the global electricity transition⚡️
1. Triple renewables by 2030
2. Double grids investment by 2030
3. Phase-out coal by 2040
4. Double nuclear by 2050
It's not renewables OR nuclear.
It's renewables AND nuclear.
There’s so much in this year’s excellent WEO
It’s now 524 pages. If you want to learn about the energy transition, don’t pay to go university.. just read this!
Here are my key takeaways 🧵
World Energy Outlook 2022 is out!
It shows energy markets & policies are changing profoundly as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
Today’s crisis promises to be a historic turning point towards a cleaner & more secure energy system

Here's the new BNEF solar forecast.
2023 🤯, 2024🤯🤯
For context: I added the black line, which is the record coal power plant capacity that the world installed in one year (107GW in 2015).. ☀️
This graph should make me happy.
But it makes me angry. Angry that the solution was there all along and vested interests prevented those solutions happening until far too late, with millions of unnecessary premature deaths that happened in the mean time...
Nuclear is the EU's biggest single source of electricity, providing 23% of EU electricity in 2023.
Yet there are a small number of people that want to shut nuclear plants prematurely.
I understand hesitation on building new nuclear - and to blindly extending old nuclear plants…
Only 10% of Egypt's electricity last year was renewable; 90% came from gas and oil.
Today's massive wind deal will help bring that up to 42% by 2030, saying they wil save $5b/year in gas costs 💪
This will be a cool transformation..
Solar is taking over...
We need to time air conditioning with the sun.
We need to time car charging time with the sun.
For that, we need to say goodbye to cheap overnight tariffs and hello to cheap daytime summer tariffs...
China in 2024 is doing to batteries what it did to solar in 2022+2023...
Massively overbuild supply 🏗️🏗️🏗️

"Not only will Hollandse Kust Zuid become the world’s largest offshore wind farm – stealing the title from the UK’s 1.3 GW Hornsea 2 – it’s also the world’s first offshore wind farm to be built without subsidy."
"But my country only emits less than 2% of global emissions"
...yes, and 36% of the world's emissions are from countries that are less than 2%💡
Great new graphic from

It's cool to think it's only 2.5 weeks after the shortest day of the year... yet at midday today (amidst the very cold weather), solar provided...

23% in Germany🇩🇪
22% in Belgium🇧🇪
17% in Hungary🇭🇺
11% in Poland🇵🇱

To me, cooling towers epitomise the inefficiency of fossils.
Huge amounts of concrete to use huge amounts of water to vent huge amounts of heat.
What a wasteful era we used to live in.
The IEA says priorities to 2030 are:
1. Double energy efficiency
2. Triple renewable capacity
Last week, the COP delegation put both on the table. This is an awesome proposal.
Why is no-one talking about this?
We need to make sure these are agreed at COP..
I've worked on coal phaseout for 8 years and no coal phase-out was a big bang, it’s 100 small steps.
Today many countries took a lot of steps.
Also China, India and others will be emboldened to take a few steps they wouldn’t otherwise.
This is a very good day for coal+climate
@ClaireCoutinho
"choose between net zero and keeping their citizens safe and warm"-- these two concepts are achievable simultaneously. The choice of words creates an imaginary trade-off, which fuels hate. So sad to see.
Did you think

Downgraded: CO2 capture (CCS), CO2 removal, hydrogen, (+bioenergy). These hyped solutions (some say distractions) get a reality check.
Upgraded: solar, batteries, EV and electrification. It's clearer than ever that our future energy system will run on clean power.
RENEWABLES AND EFFICIENCY MUST NOW BE AT THE TOP OF EVERY CLIMATE AND ENERGY PLAN.

THIS is the story that (almost!) no-one is talking about...
The world ALREADY has 600GW/year of solar panel supply. That's close to what we need to install per year in 2030 to keep to 1.5 degree power pathway. Solar is on tear⚡️ Ironically it's actually demand holding us back;)
PV manufacturing capacity hit 600 GW in 2022: The new edition of the International Technology Roadmap for Photovoltaic (ITRPV), published this week, finds that 295 GW of PV modules was shipped in 2022, and…

The speed of EU🇪🇺's electricity transition will be insane:
In just 8 years from 2022 to 2030, over a THIRD of total electricity production will switch to renewables in each of 🇵🇹🇳🇱🇮🇪🇬🇷🇩🇪🇪🇸🇮🇹 🤯
Today is a MASSIVE day on coal!
There will be coal phaseout commitments from Poland (yes really!), Ukraine, Vietnam (really really), and a LOT more... also movement on big financiers...
Please follow
@EmberClimate
and we'll do our best to make sense of it for you...
I don't understand why more we don't graph batteries and renewables together.
When you do, hourly generation starts to look a LOT more like like hourly demand💪
California's electricity mix on Saturday.
Renewables met 100% of demand at one point, and then in the evening, big batteries injected up to 5.3GW into the grid.
California is the world's 5th largest economy.
Want out of war? Get out of fossil fuels..
Even with the energy crisis over, Russia is still getting €600 million **PER DAY** from fossil fuel exports...
Latest data from
@CREACleanAir
German coal phaseout = an embarrassment!
1. Upto 6GW of lignite still online in 2038.
2. Only 0.3GW to go offline in next 23 months.
3. Polluters win (RWE shares hits 5-year)
4. New coal plant goes online defying UN SecGen
5. More villages bulldozed.
I love this graphic.. besides the key message, it also shows the importance of efficiency...
Electricity use per capita is lower in UK than China, yet UK is x4 the GDP/capita.
Saudi and Greece have the same GDP/capita, yet Greece uses half the electricity per capita..
NEW: EU fossil generation collapsed 17%(!) in the first half of 2023 year-on-year.
Coal ⬇️ 23%
Gas ⬇️ 13%
Caused primarily by a fall in electricity demand; rising wind and solar also helped.
I'm very happy to be a nominator for the Earthshot prize!

The UK is now at the stage of the electricity transition where its headline news when one coal power plant comes on for a few hours.

"EU will walk from climate talks if draft COP28 deal not changed"
- Minister for Environment Eamon Ryan, who is a ministerial lead for the European Union in the COP28 negotiations in Dubai
From 2019-2021, Netherlands and Spain went on a renewables binge, and... that's VERY QUICKLY reduced gas generation:
- In Netherlands by -22% (17TWh)
- In Spain by -17% (15TWh)
...in 2 years alone!
Fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossil gas fossi
We're also disappointed at the Commission’s use of the term ‘fossil gas’. It's highly unprofessional and undermines their credibility and integrity. No need given ‘natural gas’ is the official term, widely understood and clearly different from hydrogen and bio-gases.
The future will be more solar than you think☀️
