I think the bigger issue is families without kids who at a certain income would nominally pay lower tax rates than families with kids (though this is an accounting trick because we subsidize families with children).

@MattBruenig Suppose you're providing a monthly benefit, with families above certain income levels paying some or all of it back via income taxes. At tax time many middle-class filers likely won't understand the connection and will think their taxes have been raised, as the GOP will tell them.

I should point out that this was prior to the passage of some minimum standards in 2021 - This law falls short of a true implied warranty of habitability but it did raise standards somewhat. Not sure if it would have helped me though.

Funnily enough, I live in Arkansas which has no implied warranty of habitability, and since it wasn't specifically in the lease pretty much no one was responsible for fixing the leak in the roof.

You know how to prove that you do in fact own your home even if you have a mortgage? Let your roof leak or your eye heater break and see who is responsible for getting it fixed.

I won the gamefaqs summer contest 2004 - still the closest thing to a perfect bracket ever - and used the reward to buy myself San Andreas and my dad a guitar + amp set on Amazon.

Harry Turtledove has a book - Between the Rivers - where the premise is humans who rely on the gods get totally cleared by humans who need to innovate for themselves. You can't even imagine the things you can't imagine until you need to think of them yourself.

When people irl were figuring out technology to destroy cities, people in middle earth were using demons and dragons. Even the war machines in the siege of gondolin drafts take the form of mechanical dragons.

I don’t think Middle Earth had nearly as many sieges and castles as the Middle Ages. They just built walls and towers and thought that would do the job. Look how amazed the Gondorians were that Sauron’s army brought that incredible high tech - a battering ram - to the fight.

The problem with this calculation is it benefits small families to the detriment of larger ones. A household of 15 people would only get like $3000 in monthly benefits despite having 4x as many people.

@wanyeburkett SNAP maxes out at $975/month for a family of four. That's $50 per person week. Doesn't seem like way more.

You can at least imagine a system that might be able to track how many hours you've worked - but this would need to be compared to a list of 10 different mandatory exemptions, 3 optional exemptions, and at least 2 other ways to meet the community engagement requirement.

The problem is that we do not have, and are not building, an information system that allows us to check whether an able-bodied working aged person is working 40 hours a week.

I've pretty much known in the abstract that Congress was going to pass this for months but it's still another thing to actually see it happen. I really don't think people are processing how this will impact state and local budgets, which are already tightening.
