Great coverage of this important issue from @BBC! Glad to be interviewed on this – offshore wind impacts need to be managed, but maintaining status quo for energy development (fossil fuels) is a major threat to wildlife.

We hope that with unionization RAPIDLY increasing at academic institutions, this paper will be a useful starting point for discussions in other life sciences departments leading up to and during future labor strikes!.

We worked collaboratively as an EEB department @ucsc to highlight key challenges for undergraduates, grad students, postdocs, staff, and faculty that we experienced during the 2022 UC movement, and discuss organizational interventions to address them.

However, academic strikes are stressful and divisive to endure, and are complicated to organize, particularly in life sciences departments where graduate students are paid for hugely different types of work, from teaching to remote field work.

Barriers disproportionately affect students with excluded identities, and departmental DEI initiatives are insufficient to make institutional change to working conditions. Worker organizing can be a powerful tool to address barriers at the institutional level.

Grad school is tough: stipends are typically far below living wages, benefits are frequently inadequate to address needs (e.g., childcare), and power dynamics can create breeding grounds for harassment and abuse. These conditions can act as barriers to a career in life sciences.

Has anyone had success with a quantitative-type Life Sciences #NSFGRFP proposal? Thinking about applying w/ a primarily modeling prop this year but have mostly seen examples of more experimental field/lab props get funded – curious to hear if folks have had other experience?.
