@ESAEcology We used data from camera traps, seal pup necropsies, and direct observations to describe 59 coyote predation events in three locations, and found that coyotes routinely hunt seals in one location in Mendocino county (and have for 8 years). Some of our videos, here:

Super grateful to reviewers, co-authors, funders, and all who helped bring this project to fruition. This was my first time independently bringing a project from imagining/funding to publication so I am proud and excited to share ☺️

However, scavenging rates were substantially lower on beaches with more domestic dogs, suggesting that dogs may be interfering with important sandy beach ecosystem functions.

We found that urbanization strongly influenced the community of vertebrate scavengers on sandy beaches, but that scavenging rates were pretty consistent across urbanization levels.

We used baited camera traps on 17 beaches spanning a gradient of coastal urbanization to assess sandy beach scavenging assemblages and scavenging rates.

Thrilled to share the first chapter from my PhD, with 2 awesome @ucsc undergrad co-authors, is out now in @ESAEcosphere. We found that urbanization alters sandy beach scavenging assemblages and that dogs suppress scavenging ecosystem function:.

Update: no otter predation occurred, just another coyote kleptoparasite stealing an otter-killed pelican :).

Some pieces of this code may also be useful for people who have lost camera trap photo metadata due to other reasons. Hope it will be helpful to others!.

Do you work with Browning camera trap Timelapse+ files? I am sorry for you if so! . However, your metadata is not all lost! I am working on some tools for pulling metadata from images, data cleaning, and file reorganization. Check it out and help here: .

This is the first of many neat stories that I hope to share from Point Reyes, where coastal coyotes appear to be taking advantage of a wide variety of food sources from marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems.

In the note, we describe how recovering river otter populations can generate novel cross-ecosystem connections (. or restore historically existing linkages) by providing carrion to terrestrial kleptoparasites (food thieves).
