Third graders in Steubenville, Ohio, are among the best little readers in the nation. For nearly 20 years, the elementary schools in this economically depressed area have produced better readers than some of the wealthiest places in the country.

Interesting that part of Louisiana’s state curriculum emphasizes writing!.
Did you know that @doelouisiana developed its own knowledge-building ELA curriculum a decade ago, and it's in use statewide?. @natwexler reminds us that Louisiana embraced more than just phonics, as the state emerges as a NAEP bright spot.

So important but so overlooked!!!!.
When you increase how much students write, comprehension improves (even on norm-referenced tests!). When you teach writing, you become better in phonological awareness, word reading skills, fluency, and comprehension. 💥 . 🎧 Listen to the episode 🎧.
