you cannot change any society unless you take responsibility for it, unless you see yourself as belonging to it & responsible for changing it. —Grace Lee Boggs
There's a difference between being a leftist and doing what will actually move others to the left.
Purity tests are most useful on oneself, to test integrity to one's own philosophy.
Subjecting others to purity tests turns more people away from the direction we want them to go.
Did you know that 2 million people in the US are not working due to Long Covid?
Did you know that 1 out of 5 people who get Covid get Long Covid?
Did you know that when you're in a crowded subway car, it's probable that someone (unmasked) has Covid?
#CovidIsntOver
. But with over 1 million now dead and over 25 million disabled, my denial of our collective denial of COVID finally is.
Starting today, I will walk away from any gathering if most of my beloved friends, colleagues, or comrades are unmasked. I ask that you join me.
Did you know that XBB.1.5 is the most transmissible COVID subvariant yet?
Did you know that XBB.1.5 started in the State of New York?
Did you know that what makes XBB.1.5 so transmissible and immune-evasive is that it evolved from people who already got Covid many times?
I ask these questions because I know that most of my friends and colleagues don't know any of these things. The media is eliding essential info, leading to a fatal lack of adequate public health measures.
Friends, you can DM me privately to field your questions without judgment.
NYC election lawyers cost $1,000+ per hour.
This recount will likely cost
@CabanForQueens
tens of thousands in order to put up a fair fight in court.
Katz has the County machine lawyers; Cabán has us.
Please give what you can:
Hearing that
@MelindaKatz

The Democratic primary for
#QueensDA
is almost certainly headed for a recount, which would have been triggered by a roughly 450-vote difference (1/2 of 1% of ~90K votes)
#WearAMask
. It's hard to change our habits. Before 2020, most of us had never been asked to wear a mask. But now everyone's at risk of disability; many are at risk of death. So commit to masking. If you try and fail, that's ok; just try again. That's how we'll change our culture.

@BOENYC

Friends, I've now had a chance to talk with 17 people who were present or otherwise directly involved in the
@Dianne4NYC
campaign problems reported last week.
Though still unsure about several crucial facts, I'll share my current thoughts because early voting starts June 12.
After yesterday, are we still ok with cutting NYPD's budget by $1 billion over 4 years?
Or will we get serious, as have
@tiffany_caban
and
@Dianne4NYC
, and demand $3 billion now?
If a budget states our values, anything less than $3B means we do not value Black and Brown lives.
When
@Dianne4NYC
announced her run, like many of you I didn't know her. So I observed closely. Here's what I see:
✅ Her platform is the most courageous
✅ Her solidarity is with the vulnerable
✅ Her women-led team models the future we need
For these reasons I'm
#TeamMayorales
As today made clear, Cuomo is an abuser. So he isn't the type to ever resign; he's the type who must be booted out.
Honorable NYS Assembly Members:
☑️ Yes, it's time to draft articles of impeachment.
Honorable NYS Senators:
☑️ Yes, it's time to whip the votes for a ⅔ majority.
Leftists often speak in ways that appeal mainly to fellow leftists; I get why.
But which is the better goal: to be a leftist in public or to build the left's power by moving other members of the public?
Kudos to
@AOC
for consistently choosing the latter.
The answer is yes:
@Dianne4NYC
can win.
First, take some time to verify it for yourself. Let it sink in. Then take some time to make time for this campaign.
Do it for economic justice, racial justice, gender justice, environmental justice. Because another world is possible.
Ocasio 2018. Cabán 2019. Bernie 2020. Cynthia 2020. The main lessons are the same:
IF WE DON'T VOTE OUR VALUES:
Even if we win, we'll lose what we didn't even fight for.
IF WE VOTE OUR VALUES:
Even if we lose, we'll win at least some of what we fought for.

In 2013 the most progressive candidate was John Liu. Even before his campaign finance issue emerged, progressives were prioritizing de Blasio.
Today the most progressive choice is Dianne. Yet many are leaning Stringer.
If we don't learn from 2013, we will repeat 2014-2021.
On anti-Asian racism, I'll say this:
To
#StopAsianHate
requires much heavier lifting that most of us are currently willing to do.
Not blaming China isn't enough. Are we willing to do the structural work, like
🔸Decriminalize sex work?
🔸Fund linguistic justice?
🔸Abolish ICE?
...that is, if, like me, you have the privilege to do so. Of course, many do not have that privilege, which is why it is all the more important that those of us who do have that privilege exercise it. 🙏
HOW TO IMPEACH THE GOVERNOR OF NEW YORK
STEP 1:
Get NYS Assembly to introduce articles of impeachment and adopt said articles by simple majority.
STEP 2:
Then, at subsequent trial conducted by Lt. Governor, NYS Senate, & Court of Appeals, get Senate to convict with ⅔ majority.
.
@NYCMayor
is spending $1.5 million **every day** on temp nurses at public hospitals. He's already spent well over $1 BILLION in city money.
Why? To try to break the bargaining backs of our permanent nurses, who are getting paid $20,000/yr less than nurses in the private sector.
Friends, now that Yang's officially in the race, we must be especially disciplined.
Right now only 2 candidates clearly align with us:
✅
@Dianne4NYC
✅
@CMenchaca
With matching funds, we have enough $ to make Dianne & Carlos frontrunners – if each of us gives what we can.
My parents raised me to be a fatal workaholic

People often ask me, "Bright, how do you stay so positive after all these years in politics?"
One ingredient: I take seriously only the views of those who do the work.
Those who criticize without trying to solve those problems with their own labor rarely have useful criticisms.
Most white people I know are still underestimating
@Dianne4NYC
.
But outlets will soon catch up on this team's achievements. The fruits of its labor, led by women of color, will soon become impossible to plausibly deny.
In the meantime, I am so grateful to work with these WOC.
The NYS Assembly Majority is showing it lacks the courage to impeach Cuomo.
The function of its "investigation" is to lend Cuomo precious time so he can try to repair his image.
We must be prepared to oust Cuomo with our votes. We must start building the broad coalition now.
In a New York City governed by justice, Eric Adams would resign after making this statement.
In the New York City we currently have, we must do what's necessary to make Eric Adams a one-term mayor.
To that end, one condition we must create first is a truly citywide coalition.
More from my interview with Mayor Eric Adams. On the issue of vigilantism… is it ok for passengers to take matters into their own hands?
His answer: “Each situation is different…. We cannot just blanketly say what a passenger should or should not do on a situation like that.”
It's not your fault if you don't vote for Hochul; everyone knows we can think of a hundred reasons why. But if you don't and Zeldin wins, your life and mine will get a lot worse in a hurry.

NYC's had 109 mayors. All but 1 have been white; all have been male. The reason remains the same. Today its name is Yang.
There will always be a Yang, and the "strategic choice" will always be a white man – until we say enough.
We cannot ignore our Black & women allies. Enough.
2 years of studying to get the SAT score dad wanted.
15 years of saving to buy the place that'll house my partner & me, our firm, and our local organizing.
20 years of therapy to address my compulsion to please others.
41 years of living to learn to truly welcome criticism.
Hochul's nomination choice makes perfect sense: it's an attempt to pit progressives against Latines.
Jenny Rivera would have been a win-win; LaSalle is the divide-and-conquer move.
But we know what to do: resist divide-and-conquer, and instead hold out, together, for a win-win.

One of my neighbors is a Korean immigrant woman who does massage work.
We met because I wanted to say hi & apologize for the noise coming from my place (renovation).
At first she was afraid. But after seeing her face & hearing how she spoke English, I could tell she was Korean.
Been thinking for a while now about starting a very public draft effort to help us choose someone to beat Cuomo in 2022.
Can't decide if it's a good or bad idea. What do y'all think?
Can you see yourself spending 5 hrs/month on this with 100 other allies from now til June 2022?
Been calling fellow NY WFP members since yesterday to hear what they want to do re: Stringer endorsement, while sharing why I think we must rescind it ASAP.
But because I can't call every member, I'll also ask here: if you're a member, I'd appreciate your response. DMs are open.
How best to respond to the worst air quality in NYC's recorded history? Let it radicalize you.
Now's the time to question more deeply, and to join with others in the work of addressing root causes.
To the owner class, our value is our labor; those unable to work have little value except as voters. The COVID crisis presents a great opportunity for socialists to put forth another, more compelling vision of everyone's value. To do so, we must first recognize COVID as a crisis.
.
@Dianne4NYC
's campaign is for both Bernie and Warren supporters.
It has a clear vision of the path to our self-liberation — of the terminus that, when reached, will transform our very relations.
But it also has that joyful, collaborative spirit and a healthy, welcome humility.
I recognize that a majority of my fellow Asian Americans in NYC want more police and also support efforts to roll back bail reform. That does not mean they are right. Call me whatever you want; I will not help perpetuate caging & killing more Black men just so some "feel" safer.
While living in NYC in the 1970s, my Korean immigrant dad was mugged several times, at least once at gunpoint. That's why he'd call NYC "hell on earth" and why my siblings and I were born in NJ. But he never called the police. Why not? Because he knew they didn't prevent crime.
Today I turn 42. In about two more years, my partner and I will be able to start the life we dreamed of 16 years ago.
Until then, there are many more promises to keep and requests to try to meet. Even if I fail more often than I succeed, I know that even failing is a blessing.
Much love to my WFP family.
Here's what I think my party got right & wrong:
RIGHT: ELEVATING ALL 3 CANDIDATES. To beat the corporate candidates, we need a broad coalition.
WRONG: THE ORDER. At the heart of the debate was who is most viable. With respect, I believe it's Dianne.
We’re proud to announce our ranked choice endorsement for NYC Mayor:
1️⃣
@scottmstringer
2️⃣
@Dianne4NYC
3️⃣
@MayaWiley
Scott, Dianne & Maya are driving the progressive agenda in this election and centering the needs of communities hardest hit by the pandemic and economic crisis.
Candidate Eric Adams ran and won on the promise to reduce crime, so it is on crime that he will be judged.
Mayor Adams wants, and will win, cuts to funding for programs addressing the root causes of crime.
Crime will not only keep increasing under his watch; it will accelerate.
Benenson Poll, before news of Jean Kim:
22 Yang
17 Adams
11 Stringer
08 Wiley
07 Morales
Stringer's votes will go to Dianne or Maya.

M = Maya Wiley
D = Dianne Morales
SPENT:
M: $1,313,312
D: $288,052
CASH ON HAND:
M: $2,546,528
D: $2,507,614
You tell me who's more viable.
Like many of you, I'm 6AM—9PMing tomorrow and will be too tired to write this tomorrow, so I'm writing it now:
@nycdsa
and
@nywfp
have done truly outstanding electoral work this cycle. Yes, so much depends on how many races we win. But we are more organized than ever before. 🙏
So I turned 40 today, and life is good – very good!
Feeling very blessed to be in conversation, collaboration, and solidarity with so many people. We are building community, one relationship at a time – and to me, that is living at its best.
Who should be the next Council Speaker?
We don't need a Speaker who voted yes to a budget that increased NYPD's funding.
We don't need a Speaker who'll keep allowing developers to turn the city into a playground for the wealthy.
That's why I think we need
@Tiffany_Caban
.
An AG who will “think of the AG as the largest public interest law firm in the country."
An AG who'll use "the awesome power of the office to make it too costly for these big companies to keep harming us."
I like what
@ZephyrTeachout
is saying very much.
Friends, today's my 44th birthday. In this moment, it feels particularly privileged and precious to be alive.
So today I want to take up a bit of your time + space, here + now, to say thank you for your friendship.
PS I want to shout out
@QueensDSA
and
@QueensElectoral
for instituting mask requirements at their most recent respective in-person meetings. May all leftist orgs heed our disability justice & public health organizers, whose wisdom born of experience is vital to the safety of all.
#FlushingRezoning
. Today we lost a big battle. The Council voted to displace thousands of Asian & Latinx immigrants whose labor & culture make Flushing what it is.
But we're winning the war. Already, 50 Council & 2 mayoral candidates are speaking our language. 2021 will be ours.
If we like one candidate but for tactical reasons back another, we also become agents of the very structural evils that depreciated our favored candidate.
Let's not burden the next gen with more history to undo. Let's vote our values and vote
@Dianne4NYC
.
Why has the left de-prioritized COVID?
Short answer: at least in the US, so much of the left has *always* been disconnected from disability justice—and COVID-19 has made this problem unmistakably, terribly clear.
Please read this essay by
@raiawrites
.
The fear is rational: New Yorkers ARE a lot less safe. But the source isn't crime; it's COVID.
Two denials, two collective neuroses, are reinforcing each other:
(1) The true main cause of increases in death, disability, and disruption; and
(2) What would actually address them.
✂️ Cuts Eric Adams has made since FY23 Adopted Budget and proposed for the FY24 Executive Budget:
$1.3B to schools
$1.1B to social services
$568M to 3K
$60M to CUNY
$36.2M to libraries
That's $3 billion and 2,545 positions he wants to cut.
Our coalition releases initial analysis on
@NYCMayor
’s FY24 executive budget. Damaging cuts to education, CUNY, libraries & essential services remain in the Mayor's budget. The Mayor fails to give an honest account of proposed cuts & their impact on NYers.
#VoteWFP
now, so that we can live to fight another day.
Next year, we'll return our focus to winning more key local races, passing more landmark city & state legislation, and building the broadest statewide coalition anyone's seen in a generation.
Then, we will defeat Cuomo.

I wondered whether this would happen within my lifetime, and the answer is now yes: UAW calling for a general strike on May 1, 2028.

Cuomo has governed by the Machiavellian maxim that it's better to be feared than loved.
Most Dem leaders have feared him. But wise Dem leaders are seizing this moment.
To Dem leaders: call him out now, while it's still risky – otherwise, you risk losing the trust of the public.
#CeasefireNow
. Friends: we've called our congressional reps, joined rallies, passed out palm cards, boosted statements and information online – and we'll keep doing all these things. But as citizens of the US, which can stop Israel from committing genocide, we must still do more.
Andrew Cuomo's recent abuse of power isn't an exception but the rule:
⚠️ Hid nursing-home deaths
⚠️ Normalizes abuse of women
⚠️ Threatens ppl for telling the truth
News cycles come & go; we must continue to organize. For the first time, we can and must hold Cuomo accountable.
“Cuomo is an abuser.” NY Assemblyman

Of all the people I know who've worked on any electoral or lobbying campaign, most have since left politics.
For some, the reason was involuntary: they lacked the economic privilege to keep volunteering.
For most, the decision was a choice, albeit a hard one: they felt burnout.
"We got the publicist over here, we got this guy over here saying 'Don’t say anything that’s gonna fuck up your campaign.'

It was only 8 months ago that 3 out of every 4 NYC Council Members voted to create new jails (without actually closing Rikers).
Any Council Members now willing to retract their support for the borough-based jails plan? To intro a bill to repeal the plan?
In 2014 at NY WFP's State Convention, I voted in favor of nominating Zephyr Teachout for governor over Andrew Cuomo. About 40% of us voted for Zephyr.
In 2018, I helped whip the vote in favor of nominating Cynthia Nixon instead of Cuomo. About 90% of us voted for Cynthia.

Andrew Yang wants to transcend dichotomies, especially of left and right.
But such transcendence — the synthesis of 2 political traditions into 1 that truly speaks to all — requires mastery, not a disregard, of both.
Yang fans, I share your vision, but his is a pyramid scheme.
