i bring my knitting or my emails to lectures (or marking) so i can do some light multitasking. but students also like the chance to come up to me and chat at the end of a lecture if they know iāll be at them.

iāve attended lectures for classes i tutor at @unimelb without pay (only the first year i teach a class though) ā itās pretty essential to have that knowledge of what the students are learning, at least so youāre not just repeating the lecture, and should be paid!.
USYD's Dean of Arts argues against paying tutors for attending lectures as there is "no inherent link" between the two. Meanwhile, this first time teacher's guide on the University of Sydney website describes it as an "obvious requirement"!.
