An underrated reason why this is a common sentiment in America is that huge portions of our impressive growth gets eaten up by rent-seeking so everyone ends up spinning in place or experiences a decline. Housing is the most glaring example, as seen in this study:

I just completely reject that we are wealthier than we were 20 or 30 years ago in any way that matters. Whatever data seems to show that we are is very clearly not measuring what you want to measure. I don’t think burrito taxis matter. I think the phones have made us miserable. I

FTX was always solvent. No one in the world is more qualified to comment on this than Dan Chapsky. Dan was Head of Data Science at FTX. When the bankruptcy lawyers wanted to know if FTX was solvent, Dan was who they hired to calculate the answer. In a new sworn declaration,

Obviously it's better to have a functioning unbiased justice system but absent that it's not hard to imagine why mobs used to take the law into their own hands.

The inverse risk here is private actors arrogating to themselves state power. Will Anthropic et al own responsibility for every marginal death caused by degradation of the state's capacity to prosecute wars efficiently and decisively? Of course not. This whole issue is

I don’t want to comment on the DoW-Anthropic issue because I don’t know enough specifics, but stepping back a bit: If near-medium future AI systems can be used by the executive branch to arbitrary ends with zero restrictions, the U.S. will functionally cease to be a republic.

Conservatives thought it clever to make Asians the face of the affirmative action battle because God forbid they ever advocate for the people who vote for them (Asians vote overwhelmingly Dem) So Harvard just switched to only discriminating against their real target: whites

Harvard did not stop discriminating by race, @herandrews writes. It simply stopped doing so against Asians. Affirmative action continues, but now it is entirely at the expense of one race instead of two. https://t.co/R0nmdUu1Ff

I had this idea… “what if autism diagnoses are partially from fraudulent billing?” And then poked around a bit. And … turns out that the whole “1 in 30” statistic isn’t based on official diagnoses; ADDM has clinicians review school records and if the record fits then it counts

Leftist jury nullification is very real, and it’s going to destroy the last semblance of public trust in the social compact. This is happening in blue jurisdictions nationwide. If we can no longer trust juries to convict a gang member who executed a man in front of his children,
