Imagine actually working with a socialist. “It’s bullshit that we have to change before we clock in. This is exploitation, man.” “I dunno man. It’s not a big deal.” “It is a big deal! It’s fucking theft, man!” “Let’s just get back to work, ok?” “Why are you defending them?

It’s very funny that people think that in a modern workplace stricter rules on time reporting would work in the favor of employees. If the fact that the employer makes you change into your uniform before you clock in counts as “wage theft” then what’s happening every second

No, I’m trying to convince neurotic, educated, smart, high conscientiousness people that their commonsense views on crime and gender and immigration, and so on, are perfectly fine and that they don’t have to be embarrassed or feel guilty about them. Separately, but relatedly,

“So you’re saying all poor people are criminals!?” This obviously isn’t true. It’s just that disordered people do tend to end up in poorer neighborhoods. This means that good, honest poor people pay the heaviest price for our unwillingness and inability to protect them from

Of course there’s some correlation between poverty and criminality, but this is just as easily explained by the fact that criminality leads to poverty, as opposed to the other way around. All things being equal, you would not really expect a guy shoplifting from CVS or standing

We talk about it all the time. The evidence that poverty causes crime is not very strong. For one thing, the data show that criminality just simply doesn’t pay well enough or consistently enough to replace even a low wage job. But, for another thing, we can just see pretty

I would take the pro-life movement a lot more seriously if they were marching in the streets to demand full funding for SNAP and WIC like they march to protest against abortion.

All cultures are not equal. Some are clearly better than others, and the revealed preference of the world is that the West is at the top of the pack. We also know people bring their cultures with them, and that we can see differences in outcomes persist for generations. A

What you see with a lot of this “wage theft” stuff is it’ll be like, “the employer made employees change clothes before clocking in for their shift and were sued on the grounds that the time spent changing should have been compensated” and it’s just, like, I don’t know man, ok?

None of this is true, just to be clear. The numbers on the right are way too small and if you actually look at what they’re counting on the left you’d just roll your eyes.

I think a lot of our problems have this character. If American cities had crime rates that were 20% or 40% or 70% or 90% higher than European cities, then that would be in a realm that you could actually discuss. But just as human beings have difficulty with both the microscopic

What happened to American cities in the 20th century is so bad that it’s almost unthinkable. I think it’s actually so bad that it defies normal understanding. Like, if people knew how bad it actually was, it’s all they’d be able to talk about. And they would never dream of
