Time to re-up my hot take that creatures like this should be given to non-Merfolk tribes. The Merfolk players are demonstrably happy to play bad cards and lose, give this to a tribe whose supporters are holding out for better.
fetchlands $200
FIRE creatures $300
sideboard cards $150
4x signed Liliana of the Veil $6000
Reid Duke's exact haircut done by a specialist $120
Someone who is good at magic please help me budget this. My RCQ chances are dying
I won today's Modern Super PTQ with Grixis Murktide Shadow.

OPPONENT: no, i don’t
ME: my name's in the Companion app, dummy
(we play the match)
OPPONENT: ggs pro tour champion Ari Lax

@mattyglesias
Imagine if RBG's mother had waited 2 seconds to have sex with her dad, thus being fertilized with a different sperm, and her replacement daughter had discovered cold fusion
Guy: has traveled hundreds of miles and paid thousands of dollars to vend staples to me and my ilk at a tournament with $100,000 on the line
Me: $3? This card is 50 cents on TCGPlayer for 8-day shipping
So this was ambiguous. There's
- guy who was DQed from the last PT and seems to have made no apology
- guy who turned a fetchland into a vamp on camera a few years ago and eventually half-apologized
- guy who was banned for a year without explanation
And all three are playing!

@MagicOnline
I was just 3-1 in a PTQ, facing TheHateUGave. User MeiaToia began trade spamming me when my opponent and I were both in red time. (The block option on trades requires me to fill out a form.)
Please ban both these individuals off the face of the earth.
Your friend time travels to the present day from 6 months ago, after MH1 was announced but before any spoilers. You tell them two of these cards were deemed too strong for Standard and put in MH1 and the others are from the next non-Core expansion. Can they guess which are which?
4-0ed the first post-Lurrus Modern prelim with Murktide GDS. Don't take most of the card choices too seriously.

Many people call Storm the Festival "the new Collected Company", but it's important to remember that, as a sorcery, you can't cast it during your upkeep
Sheoldredgate and ensuing discussions have radicalized me on trigger policy. Here is my two-part plan:
1. Remove the default decision ("no") from optional triggers.
2. No more missed triggers. They're part of the game state now and both players receive a warning if one's missed.
Hullbreacher ban trending on normie Twitter seems like a pretty strong argument for WotC's continued focus on Commander. No one cared this much when Uro or Oko got the axe.
Medium take of the week:
you SHOULD be netdecking every time you play magic until you have a very good grasp on the deck you're playing and the deck building restraints of the format
This person cast an upkeep Collected Company on camera when it made no sense to do so. I believe it happened because they knew their top card was a good hit due to the curve of the card. Judges don't DQ people unless they believe it was intentional cheating.
My weakest moment in life involved doing something worse than what
@TheTiuTangClan
did, in a much lower stress situation than he was in, and I did not make my counterparty whole.
The only thing I did better was not having the world watch me while I did it.
Weird how Modern was good with 17 years' worth of cards but bad with 18 and 19 years' worth. Since other competitive formats have been great in the last couple years it's probably the earlier cards that are to blame.
Honest question: what positive things do Manamorphose and Mishra's Bauble add to Modern? I tend to view them as unhealthy, unfair cards, but I'm curious if there is a counter argument.
I continue to find it very weird how much emphasis there is on Pioneer as a format in the future of competitive play, when as far as I can tell we all agreed a year ago that no one actually wanted to play it.
There are formats people play even when not forced to!
@Will_Nivv
Bart van Etten shuffle cheater on video
Marco Camiluzzi banned some years ago after a DQ, no public story afaik
Federico Vuono palmed a card from his graveyard at the last PT but I've been told he's banned and not playing Worlds
It's just a fucking travesty that so much combo still exists in Pioneer.
@mtg_ianduke
thanks for such a fun and exciting combo-oriented format that 200 people join leagues for, and your weekend events don't fire.
the arms race of unanswerable vs new answers does no one any good, not looking forward to the new card in 4 years that can't be targeted or chosen during the resolution of a spell or ability
I played a lot of Modern in 2019, and I honestly believe that casting Hogaak made the format better (more so on turn 2). It’s a fairly statted creature for its cost, that makes games about creature combat, and getting hit once or twice isn't game over.
Gotta get it out of the way: no Pioneer bans is a triumph of cool-headedness and rationality. Great work.
On to Modern: let's talk Neoform. Here are my preliminary thoughts on deck construction:
Updated Neoform Gravestorm list if anyone is interested. The Star/Oracle kill is superior to Drum/Labman in almost every way, though it's the kind of difference that only comes up once every hundred games.
Imo the big problem with Pioneer is there's not enough ways for Phoenix to kill cards like Archfiend of the Dross or a Vein Ripper with a +1/+1 counter. We need banger designs like this legal in all formats
I'm honestly disgusted by all the poser brewers who only build decks around new terrible cards. If you're a REAL brewer why have you never used any of these?
Happy ending to the trade spam saga — I haven't seen either offending user in events recently, and I just discovered the settings added this "Trade Requests: Block While Playing" option.
Props for this response,
@MagicOnline

1. Be Huey
2. Use a magic spell to erase all WotC employees' memories of organized play
3. "Hire me, I can tell you the secret of running OP"
4. tell them to do GPs and PTs
it's so obvious once you see it
(1/4) Hey all! It has been a common question over the last year or so about when we'd be having large, open, competitive tournaments again. I'm excited to say that we're finally announcing one!
#WoTCStaff
I'm concerned this prize pool is too large. It encourages fierce competition for a severely limited resource, and many people who don't end up winning will be worse off than if they hadn't completed or the allure of first prize had been smaller. Please do better.
August 15, 2021: Star City Games columnist Bennie Smith admits to going afk vs "asshole decks" on Magic Arena, wasting his opponent's time as he writes his column. Bennie claims to do this for "80%" of opponents, eliciting various call outs for unsportsmanlike behavior
kind of insane how they made 100 changes to Vintage Cube this iteration, split evenly between "we cut a 15th pick no one's played in years for a card banned in 3 formats" and "we cut a top 100 card for a Standard-legal uncommon you've never heard of"
Say what you will about Expressive Iteration's power level, playing with it is extremely skill-testing and I love working the puzzle of when to cast it.

These events filling up 2 days before they fire is a good reminder that Vintage Cube should be up 10x as often and everyone responsible for taking it down in favor of worse cubes should be in prison
Easy steps to take to prepare for a successful Showcase Challenge:
1. Set your alarm early and be prepared with a nutritious breakfast.
2. Drink a large cup of coffee.
3. Disable incoming trade and game requests so you're safe from these two scumbags who still aren't banned.

for a great event.
So much misinformation over at
@MTGGoldfish
they should get banned from Twitter
Burn is 2nd most popular deck? UR Control is a deck (links to a Murktide list LMAO)? There's a deck called 5c Omnath that's 4 colors, and you think it's different from 4c Blink because...Ephemerate?
Cut some bad cards from an old Tron list for Rings and picked up back-to-back trophies. The opposition was lacking but I'm still impressed and looking to play more of the deck.
I'm not married to 4x Karn-7 but I think Wurmcoil sucks and isn't necessary. The Ring has no downside.
@Ajelenbogen
Evidence that Karn ban improved the format: when people say this what they mean is "I don't have to play against Karn anymore and that makes me personally happy"
This is your per-GP reminder that

uploads Elo data, a side project for which he is paid nothing, faster than the official Wizards site tells me how many Planeswalker Points I earned for the same event. He's incredible.

1. I dislike dying on turn 3 to Amelia Bedelia.
2. Amelia Bedelia won a Pioneer Showcase, which as far as I can tell is better than Mono-Green ever did.
The case is clear: ban Amelia Bedelia 4 days before an RC.
I think people are still severely underrating The Stone Brain in the Mono-Green sideboard. In addition to the obvious use against combo decks, I anticipate I will name Farewell, Extinction Event, Brave the Elements, etc. pretty often to turn 70% won games to 95%.
