Just dropped my new article entitled "Job Descriptions: How to Read Them Like a Pro"
Job descriptions suck. You don't read them. I have words about that.
Here are some things you might not know:
✨ They give you intel that empowers your job search networking strategy
✨ They
I watched my father get robbed of his pension when laid off about two years before he was set to retire.
Being Black in America, I've always assumed that folks are out to get me. I live accordingly.
Tech is nice, but it's not as different as you think.
Stay frosty my friends.
Ended my journey from

bumping into legendary filmmaker Spike Lee.
Looks up at me and says, "OK, Brilliant!" I said, "I'm trying." Glances back and literally asks, "What did Yoda say?"
"Do or do not. There is no try."
So ya, that happened. How's your Saturday going?
Introducing "Mastering Technical Interviews" 🎉
Poured my heart into this. And put my foot in it too. You've never seen a tech course like this.

Last year, I quit my job with no clear plan on how I was going to replace my income.
I was paid well at Google and enjoyed my team and the work.
But with the great recession in full swing and the pandemic drawing to a close, I sensed a unique opportunity to help the next
Let me let you in on a little secret.
I had no idea who

was until we met...at a tech conference in 2021 (AfroTech).
Both working at Google at the time and serving on a virtual panel at the booth. I was running my mouth and had no idea I was in the presence of
Doing a panel today for
@AfroTech
on breaking into tech and wanted to get some thoughts together.
So I wrote a comprehensive 2,500 word article 😂
Here are some quick thoughts on the mindset you should have if you want to be successful (🧵)
Doing some I've never done before…
Today marks the end of my first week as a full-time instructor for the Code Differently Software Engineering Bootcamp!
It has been an absolute joy to share my passion for software engineering with these students.
So far, we've covered:
*
As I reflect on making 40, I think about all the tragedy, struggle, and loss I've both experienced and witnessed.
It's a movie the likes of Antwone Fisher and The Blind Side with a dash of King Richard mixed in.
Grateful to the Lord I made it and that I get to carry a legacy.
Do you ever forget who you are? I do. 🤷🏾
But let me tell you something…
I'm the guy that helps software engineers from all walks of life nail the toughest coding interviews. And I'm GOOD at it.

Y'all, we are 56 folx away from having 4K members in Brillant Black Minds.
This is FREE for Black software engineers. No reason you can't get in on this right now.

Ageism is a thing in tech. But good thing you don't have to care what everybody else thinks.
You're 40+.
But hey, this is still the bird app and the hot take is gonna do numbers. It's just called "Tuesday".
I understand this completely and chose to go anyway for two reasons.
1) Many of the folks I serve and support show up. Might be the one time I see them IRL during the year. That's meaningful to me.
2) AfroTech is hosted by Blavity, a Black media and entertainment company. It
Afrotech was…okay. The value given doesn’t match the price paid or expenses. It feels more like a social gathering.
No real workshops or hackathons..it was all vibes but when you’re charging $800 USD for a tickets and 100k-350k for a booth..you need more tangible results
In light of recent tech conference drama, I'd like to remind everyone:
I'm a professional tech speaker and software engineer who's available to speak in all months, not just the one named "February."
Enjoy your evening. 😁
I'm very excited and honored to be a TEDx speaker in my own hometown!
I've long desired to grace the TED stage to share an idea worth spreading, but I never imagined the stage would come to me.
I don't want to spoil anything. Tix still available!
To all my friends at Twitter, just remember one thing:
There are thousands of underrepresented folks who wish they had the opportunity to work where you work.
Consider putting in a referral so that they get on a recruiters radar, especially if you're headed out the door.
PS: If you're a black software engineer in the US, don't forget that you get up to four FREE mock practice interviews, feedback, workshops, and a Discord community through Brilliant Black Minds 💡 /17
I'm not a super star and I don't have a googol followers.
But I'm so grateful that I have just enough that people rock with me because I'm actually helpful to them, but also low enough that folks just interested in vanity dismiss me altogether.
Thanks for your trust.
And that's why, for me,
@RenderATL
is
#1
and AfroTech is
#2
(for now).
If your company pays your way, then go to AfroTech for the vibes and connection.
But if you wanna learn, go to Render and pay your way if you have to. It's FUBU for Black SWEs, no doubt.
Now is the time to bring back MySpace.
We can solve two problems at once.
Replace Twitter, and inspire a whole new generation of web front-end developers.
Co-workers.

👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 this happens EVERYWHERE.
Even 22 years ago, the black security guard that stood a building down from where I worked as an intern dapped me up and said he was proud of me.
Last year when I left Google I knew every single person on the kitchen staff in my office.
Taken at its most generous interpretation, this tweet is inaccurate and incomplete.
However, here's what I think are the issues at the heart of this and some things we can do to move the conversation forward in a positive way:
The leaders of black tech twitter are people who can’t code . That’s the problem with the space. When the majority of the your “leaders” are tech adjacent and “influencers” that’s when you know your messed up in the game

My social battery is drained.🪫
If tech companies gave interview feedback like this, could you imagine how this would lift early career folks and grow representation industry wide?
Imagine the good this could do for your brand as a company!
I get that there are risks, but do they really outweigh the rewards?
Don't get out the hood just to get out the hood—that's selfish. Get out the hood to bring something back that will show the next generation how to do it better than you did.
In light of

, I'm thinking it would be good to write an article on navigating Black tech conferences as a job seeker, entrepreneur, or organization.
I've attended nearly all of them over the past two years and I have thoughts.
OK, I've impulsively decided that I want to do some web dev. Thinking of essentially making a LeetCode clone just for fun. First project post-Google and I'm on my own.
My fellow devs. Where should I start? React and MUI sounds good to me. 🤷🏾♂️

: There exists an implicit class system in tech that distinguishes between technical and non-technical people. At its worst, folks from one class will see themselves as more valuable or important than folks in the other class, leading to controversy and schisms
Unpopular opinion maybe, and I know you don't hear this in courses on technical interviewing but...
...you don't need to do data structures and algorithms (DS&A) interviews to be successful in tech.

Wifey asked me about my goals in my post-Google life. Told her I wanted to be in a black history book for helping to bring folks into tech.
Keep looking for that blue checkmark too, but I'll do just fine without it. I'm here to serve.
Thanking God for grace and opportunity.
You can go to all the tech conferences in the world, but if you don't have a plan for what you're going to do when you get there, then it's pointless.
Here's my

2023 recap vid for your enjoyment! 🎉
What was your favorite part of the conference?
My grandmother used to say "may the work I've done speak for me."
Realize I've met soo many people this year that many of you might not be familiar with my work.
So here's a thread to help guide you through some content that may be helpful to you (🧵)

Grateful to share it! I know there are some folks out there trying to serve well and help (like you!). Don't ever want to seem ungrateful for that.
My experience helped me (and my father) to rely and trust on God and on Jesus, not on humanity.
No regrets in that regard.
I'm starting to come into a new kind of realization.
You should learn how to get your first job *BEFORE* you learn how to get your first job in tech.
I didn't have to learn how to really hunt for a job until eight years into my career.
Having that lead and a highly favorite
This man right here has been such a champion for me personally. Showed up and showed out in my new technical interviewing course and has been incredibly generous with his wisdom.
@shanselman
is a living legend.
And bruhh, that t-shirt!!! 😂 I should've done Lando cosplay.
Despite the recent economic conditions and tech layoffs, two things are still true:
1) Devs are still in demand
2) You can still find a great job
One thing that's different is that you may want to change where you look. Tech companies aren't the only game in town.
Be ready.

I don't think that people really get the "hard truth" that
@techgirl1908
is telling here.
You have to be willing to step into the shoes of hiring managers and interviewers, understand their challenges, and be willing to serve as the best solution for their problem.
Being "me"
i had a wonderful conversation with
@techgirl1908
around hiring and listen it isn't personal but when you gotta go through 1k applicants everything negative counts against you

I'm really grateful for how this situation molded my father as a man and husband. It was actually one of the best things to ever happen to him as difficult as it was (and still is). It's caused me to move in the corporate world with an appropriate degree of caution and awareness.
First day of full-time entrepreneurship drawing to a close and I've managed to close a deal, converse with a founder of a tech unicorn, balance my books, setup my CRM, and initialize my task management system. By God's grace, it's been a good day.
If you don't know Big-O, I made a YouTube video to help you out. 🙌🏾
In 40 minutes, I give you the easiest intro you've ever heard. Examples in Typescript too!
