How to restore a broken democracy after it has been vandalised by populists ? And is it legal to break the law to restore the spirit of the constitution?
Spoiler: Sometimes there is no other way. Here’s my analysis on why Tusk is doing the right thing.👇
Everyone in Britain still acts as if this was a normal government. Instead it is a project of deliberate destruction, of laws, of institutions, of anything that stands in the way of a PM who just doesn’t want to be held to account.
NEW: Have it from 2 senior sources that Cab Office about to do a write round to all permanent secretaries to ask them to model headcount reductions in their departments of 20% 30% & 40%. This follows calls from PM for 20% reduction in staff -90,000 people - across Whitehall 1/
So I finally made into the Mail. Thanks to all those lovely people who made this clip go viral and just one thing that needs to be clarified: I didn’t swear myself, I just quoted a Tory in despair.
How can you possibly think it is a good idea to have Rachel Johnson on a panel when the big story this morning is Boris Johnsons potentially corrupt relationship with the BBCs chair?
It's honestly unbelievable.
Brilliant MacTaggart lecture by

- Why journalism woke up too late to populism and what do to now. A speech absolutely everyone interested in healthy democracy should watch. Here's the link.
Can't we all just agree that Brexit simply isn't possible?
And then just pretend it never happened, as it was all too awkward?
The British are good at these things. Normally.
Short and crisp. And true, sadly. The way Scholz handles the Ukraine crisis might turn out to be a historic mistake that destroys European unity at the very moment when it is most needed.
I’m sorry, but listening to Jeremy Hunt claiming he wants to now make a ‚terrific success‘ of Brexit made me laugh out loud. As long as the problems with it aren‘t acknowledged Britain will not get over this crisis. Brexit is at the heart of all this.
What is this, Elon Musk?
The BBC is not government funded.
It is funded by the British public through a system known as the licence fee. Entirely different.
On the day that “noisy” protest becomes unlawful under the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, at least 20 police officers have just surrounded anti-Brexit protestor Steve Bray outside the Houses of Parliament and seized his loud speaker.
@LBC
Finally someone dares to say it. Maybe if the Tory party manages to get rid of Johnson after all there might be some hope for sensible conservatism again in the UK? It's urgently needed.
Endless queues for British passport holders this morning in Berlin. A very lovely airport employee telling me she feels genuinely sorry for the Brits. So no Schadenfreude here. But what a mess.
If Tory MPs keep Johnson in office without a proper assessment of how parliament was misled, then any party with a clear majority can basically do as it pleases. The constitution wd mean nothing from now on.
So now John Oliver as well. Maybe time to retire for good. Not much more one can achieve in life I guess..
The only thing I would like to object to is that he apparently can't distinguish a British from a German accent. But hey, they're Americans. ;-)
Cummings will announce an overhaul of the Cabinet Office and No 10 next Monday.
The adviser has said his intention was to create a “smaller, more focused and more elite centre”, but his critics will suspect an effort to scapegoat the civil service
For those of my British followers who have asked why I started talking so much about Poland lately.
Three reasons:
1) Poland is the only country in Europe atm where mostly young voters have managed to turn the tide and kicked out an autocratic,corrupt and criminal government.
"I never had any intention of changing the terms and conditions of teachers and nurses. But what I want to be clear about is I will not be going ahead with the regional pay boards”
Liz Truss says her policy on regional pay boards has been “misrepresented”
This kind of imagined British exceptionalism is just tiring. It’s the other way round: U.K. is the first country where a Conservative Party has been taken over by them. The Tories have embraced far right policies and Braverman also frequently uses far right rhetoric. So please.
Once again it looks like the UK will be the only major European country where the far right don’t have Parliamentary representation. The liberal (small l) tradition we have is something to be proud of, and distinguishes us from many or most EU members.
For those who’d rather want to read what Maitlis had to say,
@prospect_uk
has been so kind to publish her brilliant lecture in full. (and btw, thanks for quoting me,

Daily deaths in England remain in three figures. Now basically a footnote on the news. And still no proper tracing in sight. Seems like ppl now have accepted Johnson's death rate.
The ability of the British to endure impossible situations remains a mystery to me.

asks the prime minister why he signed it in the first place?

"50 Prozent sind meiner Meinung" - klar, Beweis per Behauptung ;) Tolle Gegenrede von Vasili Golod.
Not true. It was and is possible to accelerate the process while being a member of the EU. Which Britain did. While still formally being a member of the EU.
The predictable attempts to make this into a big Brexit show are just misleading. Again.
Rishi Sunak: "We will take the extraordinary step of announcing emergency legislation. This will enable Parliament to confirm that with our new treaty Rwanda is safe. I will not allow a foreign court to block these flights to Rwanda."
The Conservative Party is helping donors apply for public roles, with officials offering behind-the-scenes support and directing applicants to a secretive Number 10 unit closed to members of the public
This is Berlin today. Calling for resistance against the Far Right.
All around Germany, people took to the streets in the last days.
History tells us:
We cannot wait until it is too late and Fascists are in power.
We have to stand up to them.
NOW.
What kind of a party fires their PM for lies, corruption and the total lack of moral integrity and only a few days later gives standing ovations to just that same man ? Sleep well everyone.
Annalena Baerbock in the Bundestag now: "Putin wanted this war whatever it takes. We now do have the duty to defend the Charta of the UN. We will support the Ukraine with military means."

This is how Orban is being described in a report on

just now. „He is accused by some in the EU of undermining democracy at home.“ As if this was a disputed matter. Astonishing.
Listening to
@BBCMarkEaston

reporting there still is no visa application center in Calais and explaining how this is a deliberate policy by the Home Office to make it harder for refugees to come to Britain. Honestly: What has become of this country?

. The slow self-destruction of the Tory party is well underway.
So we are now in the midst of a national crisis, army called out, even the right wing press turning against the government this morning. And where's the opposition? Nowhere. Haven’t heard a single soundbyte from Starmer so far. How many open goals can you miss ?
Braverman insists on saying the Supreme Court might be “thwarting“ her Ruanda policy on

Wrong. If the SC decides against it, it means her policy is illegal. So far we still have something called ‘the rule of law’ in this country.
The worst thing about the immoral and inhumane Rwanda deportation plan is that ppl all over the country are now seriously discussing whether it is ‚value for money‘. What has become of Britain.
Interesting that
@BBCr4today
dedicates a long slot to the devastating economic damage the pandemic will do without even asking a single question how a hard Brexit will accelerate it.
It will be all Covid's fault eventually.
I would like to thank everyone for their supportive messages after yesterday's slightly irritating attacks on me here.
Good to see a debate starting in the U.K. about the role of journalists holding government to the account.
That was a resignation speech unlike any other in UK politics. Honest, candid and intelligent. Whatever you make of her latest policies, there goes one of the best politicians Britain had.

@IainDale
You shd know that it’s not mutually exclusive to criticise your own government (which I have done extensively if you had read any of my tweets) and realise what’s going wrong in another one.
Brilliant as ever.

Watching Merkel's Good Bye Ceremony and feeling slightly more emotional than I thought.
Her modesty, seriousness and moral integrity.
She will be missed.
Just hearing on

that Haribo is finding it hard to keep British shops supplied after Brexit.
I've put up with a lot here, but if there is no more Gummibärchen I might have to seriously think about moving back to Berlin.
This is party unity ahead of competence and integrity. Bravermann a massive mistake. Maybe it keeps UKIP/Tory hard right happy but bad signal to Macron and most decent voters in U.K.

The Treasury declined to comment. A spokesperson for Rishi Sunak did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
Why do journalists still interview Jacob Rees-Mogg. Even with the best and most incisive questions asked, what remains are his constant obfuscations and distortions.
Braverman‘s column in the Times today isn’t just highly unusual, it is a clear violation of the constitutional principles British democracy is built on.
Plus a vicious attack on Sunaks authority as PM. If he doesn’t sack her now, he might as well resign.

The slow demise of the BBC is one of the most depressing acts of self harm when it comes to the general neglect of British soft power in the world over the last years.
Well done,
@campbellclaret

Again and again.

Senior Downing St source says “there is a lot of concern inside the building about the PM....It’s just not working. Cabinet needs to wake up and demand serious changes otherwise it’ll keep getting worse. If they don’t insist, he just won’t do anything about it."
Other than many journalists, who have left Kyiv, the BBC is still there.
A war with no witnesses on the ground is a war where the victims aren't seen anymore.
Thank you, everyone.
This is how Johnson is going to play this now. Every day a drip of spin to keep himself alive as a hero. Can’t believe the media are -still- playing along as if he hadn’t proved to be totally untrustworthy.
Maybe this has to do with me being in Berlin this weekend. But have rarely felt Britain playing next to no role like now in a situation as important as this one for the future of the whole of Europe. It's sad somehow.
