Hot take: The First Isomorphism Theorem deserves to be called the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. It’s true for Groups, Rings, Modules, Lie Algebras. It even underpins Rank–Nullity in Linear Algebra, and quotient spaces in topology. It’s in the DNA of algebraic structure itself

This plant's leaves can apparently mimic the shape of the leaves of its neighbors. What?🤠 > Boquila trifoliolata is the only plant known to engage in mimetic polymorphism, meaning it can mimic the leaves of multiple host plants.[4][17] Other species of vines are capable of

A kind of “metainterp”, in which one could measure quantitatively whether an LLM’s *qualitative* ex-post metacognitive reporting is good-faith and grounded, could be more scalable than mechinterp and much more robust than ex-ante CoT “faithfulness”. cf. https://t.co/dQWa35wN6S

Kant: Never act in accordance with a principle that you could not also will to become a universal maxim. Bentham’s CoT: The user wants a universal maxim. Maxim is from the Latin *maxima* meaning greatest. I need to think of something that I would always will to become greater…

Seems bad, like really bad The reaction to the opioid epidemic is probably worse than the opioid epidemic (taking log scales of hedonic experience seriously is sufficient but not necessary for this claim)

That's a lot of money. For context, I remember talking to a congressional staffer a few months ago who basically said that a16z was spending on the order of $100M on lobbying and that this amount was enough to make basically every politician think "hmm, I can raise a lot more if

Many people thought we'd make more advances in the social sciences than we've managed to do. Physicist Dennis Gabor in 1967: "If it were up to me, I wouldn't let a single first-class talent go into physics or chemistry. I'd put them into psychology."

Suppose some AI lab (e.g. Anthropic) were ahead in terms of capabilities but wanted to not push the capability frontier. Here's what would make sense: They distill and release a near SOTA model for cheap, reducing other labs' profit margins. However we don't see this happening.

The issue with GPT-5 in a nutshell is that unless you pay for model switching & know to use GPT-5 Thinking or Pro, when you ask “GPT-5” you sometimes get the best available AI & sometimes get one of the worst AIs available and it might even switch within a single conversation.

I also suspect that quantum fields have no inherent existence either: electrons have no haecceity, particles are just relative to a field ground state, fields are defined by symmetries. 6/6
