What could have been... Ohio Fats Blob-o Whaleman From now on, those are the only names I will refer to @jacknicklaus as. Phenomenal...also, isn't it likely that Don Lawrence called Jack the Golden Bear because of his school mascot...?🙄

Jack and the Golden Bear. The nickname actually came from a golf writer in Melbourne Australia where I grew up. Don Lawrence invented this famous nickname. Don ended up also becoming one of early friends in golf. The first time he met me I was walking through the car park with my

Another wonderful conversation, but this time about Devereux Emmet. That's two references this week! I love the deep pulls of Rockville Links & Sag Harbor Golf Course! Let's all get Mark Chalfant to make the Emmet Society a reality! Also, Jeff is doing great work at Seawane🥂

The 24 Questions episodes have been popular so we're dropping a new one with Jeff Stein. This was another fun, big conversation. We talk about Great Dunes, obviously, Dev Emmet, his unique job at Ohoopee + much more. Help share the episode. https://t.co/wMoCj5SOk2

Great talk with Todd Eckenrode about early California golf, William Watson, the Bells, MacKenzie, Thomas, Max Behr and much, much more. It only took me 5 years to get him on the pod but the wait was worth it. https://t.co/VZlTUGvLBH Sharon Heights by Channing Benjamin

Augusta National spends millions of dollars making the course firm AND green. It works for the Masters every April, but it has also created a false perception of what perfect conditioning looks like for a Top 100 course.

I was up in Scranton, PA this week for work on a day with some absolutely atrocious weather - pouring rain, howling wind, intermittent fog, cold. Still, I had to stop by the Country Club of Scranton for a quick peek at the place in fall. And even in the worst conditions

Pennsylvania is littered with incredible golf courses, but the Country Club of Scranton might just have the best greens of them all. @mattrouches explores the genius of Walter Travis in our latest Course Profile.

Before our 4th - where strategic golf was born - the 3rd has its own architectural merits. A simple design, this reverse-camber dogleg demands two very different shots: fading the approach against the slope, then drawing it into the green when the ball sits above your feet.

Morning and a reminder to Green Committees everywhere that think "the trees were always there" when their reference point is when they joined the club.

Today marks the anniversary of the worst thing to happen to golf courses in America. As a result of this law, the armchair arborists went about ruining courses in the name of beauty, without regard to agronomics or strategy. We are still undoing their haphazard plantings today.

Probably The Bridge as a total experience. The drawback is that the greens are a little establishment, but the worst holes are better than the weakest at Sebonack, there are no water hazards and it’s much more playable day to day.

Would you still golf if we went back to the 1927 dress code? Our friend Andrew is old school. Truly believes golf dress code should go back to pants, jacket, and tie. Pure class. Both the outfit and the swing.
