The Assemblymember representing one of the bluest districts in the country shows up at a hearing for a project he doesn’t even have a vote on to take a position clearly out of step with Kamala Harris, Barack Obama, and the top of the Democratic Party platform.

Assemblymember Bobby Carroll says “I know we need to do our job to make sure there is more housing… however” He spends the next 8 minutes on why this project should not get built.

The energy in this room is so toxic and counter to productive debate about the most important issue in our city. The crowd is repeatedly interrupting and booing speakers, including the Councilmember. Why do we do this to ourselves.

As a BK native & renter, NYC’s housing shortage is personal for me. That’s why I support the Arrow Linen’s rezoning in one of the least affordable neighborhoods in the city. Ty to our neighbors who are calling for more housing @BKCB7 hearing tonight! https://t.co/eXIcqmRDmm

Rents are lower and homes are more affordable when we build more homes. That’s why President Biden and Vice President Harris have put housing at the center of their economic agenda.

Why do we have a housing and population crisis in NY? See ⬇️ from Hudson, where the Planning Board has delayed this new project by 18+ months and has cut the size from 30 to 15 homes. Their rationale? 😭😭😭

Would love for VP Harris to remind and shame NYS Democrats for this.

.@POTUS & @VP Harris believe we need to build, build, build to lower housing costs. Today, the Administration is taking new actions to reduce barriers to build, making it easier & faster to use federal financing to build or rehab affordable housing. 🧵: https://t.co/R7MI2C0AmA

The proposal being objected to is 123 new deeply affordable apartments targeted to LGBTQ seniors. The project will include 16,000 square feet of publicly accessible open space (open all year round to the public, unlike now…)

Same day, same city. We have a lot of offices relative to demand, and not a lot of apartments.

DC has increased its housing stock by 10% in 5 years. In NYC, we’ve done…3.4% 😢

🏗️🌆🏆 Congrats to @MayorBowser for the early achievement of her goal of 36,000 new homes by 2025. That's a 10% increase in total units in DC and (assuming almost all new units are multifamily) a 4% increase in the region's multifamily stock. https://t.co/gMmw2PehU2

Thread about my recent (all too common) renting experience. A few months ago the landlord of my 50 year old apartment tried to raise the rent close to the max, so my roommate and I moved out. They now are paying for it.

The revitalization of Pier 42 has been a long-time priority for many. Upland Park will be a recreational and green space that improves wellbeing and quality of life. Another example of how we’re delivering for the east side, having secured this commitment in ESCR negotiations.

Cried reading this on the subway into work this morning. Total State failure and apathy for this family. Eventually NY will pay a lot of $$, but there's no momentum to make systemic changes to hospitals, courts, etc. https://t.co/ofHNntj9nt

Background: the bulk of the housing stock is owned by 50-70 year old empty nesters aging in place with spare bedrooms, while young families with children face crowded housing despite a higher need for space. See also Redfin research https://t.co/jTzQwnAAXS
