Head of Human Genetics and Senior Group Leader (Genomics of Inflammation and Immunity) at Wellcome Sanger Institute. #firstgen
Joined April 2010
This was an immense effort by members of my lab @sangerinstitute and beyond. Thank you to our collaborators including @Gastro_GRJ, funders @OpenTargets, @CrohnsColitisFn, @wellcometrust, and, of course, to the individuals who donated samples to make this work possible.

Due to the sheer number of exciting findings and broad relevance, we decided to divide our tweetorial into two subsets: - For an overview of the genetics 🧬 see < https://t.co/P1Ni68kIqp> by @Bradleyomics - For the IBD biology 💊 see < https://t.co/I5dIkh3B1N> by @Tobioinformatic

IBDverse is the largest collection of scRNAseq from sites commonly affected by IBD - 2.2M high quality cells, 732 samples, 421 individuals (inc. 125 patients). After integration, we comprehensively mapped genetic regulators of expression and nominated disease effector genes.

Thrilled to share the latest preprint from my lab: https://t.co/1exqLfFHtk. Co-led by @Tobioinformatic and @Bradleyomics, supervised by myself and @IBD_MB, we generated IBDverse💫 - gaining insights into genetic susceptibility and pathology of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Most genetic variants associated with complex diseases lie in non-coding regions, complicating efforts to identify effector genes and relevant cell types. Here, we map cis-eQTLs across 2.2 million...

Wonderfully presented, Bradley. You did yourself, the project and the lab proud. You can relax and enjoy the rest of #ASHG24 now!
@Bradleyomics, semi-finalist of the #ASHG24 early career awards, presenting his work on single-cell eQTL analyses to identify new effector genes and relevant cell-states on IBD

Well done, Tobi! Richly deserved and I’m very proud of you.
Delighted to have won the Lodewijk Sandkuijl Award for best talk in complex disease/statistical genetics at #ESHG24. Very fortunate to have had such an incredible dataset to work on during my PhD as well as the fantastic support of @anderson_carl + the rest of the IBDverse team

Heading to #eshg2024 shortly - we have four post doctoral positions in computational genomics, graph genomes, blood single cell genomics, and statistics coming online soon - get in touch if you are interested in meeting up and discussing any of these

It’s meeting-free week this week in the Human Genetics programme @sangerinstitute. A time for focussing on our individual priorities. I’ve got a couple reviewer response documents to finalise, a presentation to put together and a manuscript proposal to write. Should be fun.

The generous funding from @OpenTargets and @sangerinstitute also covers research fellows and research nurses at the study sites, not only ensuring we hit our recruitment targets but also train the next generation of clinical academics in gastroenterology.

Very excited to be launching Open-IBD today, on #worldIBDday. We will recruit 1000 newly diagnosed IBD patients and follow them for up to 4 years. Via dense biological sampling we aim to build predictors of disease course and treatment response and ID new drug targets. #ddw2024
On #WorldIBDDay, Open Targets project lead @anderson_carl introduces our most ambitious project yet: @OpenIBD!

Messaging all immunologists who are excited about the potential of large-scale genome editing to understand mechanisms underlying inflammatory bowel disease - this postdoctoral fellowship with @gosiatrynka and I may be right up your street!
A fantastic postdoc opportunity to bridge two groups at Sanger. We have an exciting project, co-developed with @anderson_carl to deploy large scale CRISPR and single-cell transcrptomics to understand IBD genes in Tregs. We're looking for an immunologist to lead this effort!
