We know that coding knowledge is useful in neuroscience research, but how do we train our students when few bio instructors are proficient in coding and C.S. classes are full? π€. I tackle these issues in this NeuroView for @NeuroCellPress!.

Yaaaay my first education publication is live!. It describes a lesson plan to use @AllenInstitute resources to introduce students to electrophysiological cell types, coding, and harvesting open access data. (via @FUNfaculty)

I'd like to push back on the idea that every scientist should also do #scicomm. Scientists have full time jobs, and are already required to have multiple skill sets. We need more people (and more funding) to fill the gap, rather than give scientists more to do. #SacklerSciComm.

In a survey of 27 different fields and ~300 participants, @AndreiCimpian's team found that neuroscience had the HIGHEST scores in both perceived masculinity-content culture AND perceived emphasis on brilliance. Friends, we need to be talking about this.

If you're a trainee going to #SfN19 for the first time, here's my advice π. πΉwear GOOD SHOES π.πΉbring snacks π₯¨.πΉchoose 3-5 posters/talks each day that are your priority βοΈ.πΉ don't go to talks/posters all day, everyday. you need processing time.π€.πΉ take notes! βοΈ.

I just gave my lecture on neuroscience careers. In the past, I've said "you can make enough money to live on in grad school.". This year I said, "unless something changes, it will be tough to stay afloat in grad school.". It was disheartening, but they need to know. #FairUCNow.

Neuropixels probes are valuable & a bit unwieldy for a mouse. So @GeorgeBekheet, @anne_churchland, & I developed a way to use & recycle them in unrestrained mice. We were able to simultaneously record up to 145 units each day for >1 week, remove the probe, & use it again. π.
Chronically-implanted Neuropixels probes enable high yield recordings in freely moving mice #biorxiv_neursci.

I get asked about my job quite a bit. I'm often hesitant to talk it up because there aren't *many* of these types of positions (teaching-focused but also tenure track), BUT this year we're hiring in @ucsdbiosciences for a position like mine!.

Home office turned into electrophysiology demonstration rig featuring @BackyardBrains and some cockroaches!. The noise here is bound to be terrible π Iβm probably going to end up turning everything off, hah, but we will do our best!

I strongly believe in transparency in PhD admissions, especially in the face of changing guidelines about how we select students. So, @TaralynTan @VeronicaGMarti2 @Shitskichelle and I wrote this paper for @FUNfaculty to expose the hidden curriculum. π¦.

Iβm really excited to have a column as a part of @_TheTransmitter!. Iβll be writing pieces about seminal papers in neuroscience, contextualizing them and providing resources and ideas for how to integrate them into courses.π. Send me ideas for which papers to cover!.
We are thrilled to announce the launch of The Transmitter, a publication for the neuroscience community that offers news and analysis of the field, written by journalists and scientists. Explore

My story for @massivesci was picked up by @Salon! I really didn't expect that this would resonate with so many people, but I'm really glad it did, and thankful for the encouragement.

Iβve talked a bunch about my teaching professor position β on panels, on podcasts, in writing. A common response is βwow, what a cool job I didnβt know aboutβ or βthat totally sounds like a great way to combine teaching & science!β . And YET very few people apply to our jobs.

. but then a student sees your name on the Outlist and comes to your office to talk about being a queer scientist and πππ it's worth it.
I recently added my name to UCSD's Outlist, which is scary on a day like today. I feel okay doing this because I live in CA & work at a place with a vibrant LGBT center. If I'm honest, I wouldn't be on this list if I lived in one of the 26 states without legal protection.
