I’m extremely proud of the work that I did, and everything that I learned about myself along the way. I hope it inspires you to be a bit more emotional, no matter if you’re working in tech or not.

Frustrations: The projects that hit a dead end, or simply drove me nuts Explorations: Small-scale attempts at projects that helped me build skills Aspirations: Ideas that I need to sit with for a bit longer before I start/finish them

Project 4: Frustrations, Explorations, and Aspirations I tried many different projects in the process of building this portfolio. In order to reclaim my relationship with “failure” and non-productivity, I wanted to give credit to the things that didn’t work out along the way.

Project 3: Portfolio Website Even more frustrating than my initial ML experience was my software engineering class. In short, the breakdown it gave me nearly scared me out of the industry forever. Building a site for this project—on my own timeline—helped me reclaim the field!

I go over web scraping, model metrics, classification and regression, and a bit of unsupervised learning—all on an aggressively beginner-friendly level through the fun example of rating fashion. The Medium article series is here:

Project 2: RuPaul’s Machine Learning Race I took a frustratingly difficult machine learning class around the same time I got into Drag Race. After I learned how to web scrape, I built a dataset of RPDR runway images, and realized I could use them to teach ML fundamentals.

Project 1: Colombia Periodical Licenses Map Working with @RAKarl as part of the Colombia Digital History Lab, I digitized and geocoded archival images of Colombian periodical license registries from 1915-1960s. The data are visible in a web app for exploration.

My actual project is a compilation of several different digital humanities projects through which I reflect on my distinctly “emotional” approach. It’s a combination of anti-objectivity, transparency, and care ethics.

She called me “the most emotional coder [she] had ever met,” and after several months of unpacking that, I came to not only define the term, but embrace it to its fullest extent. Being emotional is my strength, and all technical work would benefit from an embrace of feeling.

The term “emotional coding” came about when I was crying in a cafe because I couldn’t get the Twitter API to work. My friend, who was my roommate during the harshest burnout period of my life, asked me why I bothered with computer science since it clearly made me so miserable.

Recently, I finished my senior Capstone project, and the time has come to share it with my large and highly devoted Twitter audience. “Emotional Coding: An Exploration of Feminist Data Ethics Through the Digital Humanities and Beyond” is live here: https://t.co/in9tuZe7BS

“dystopian hell” is when you can conveniently get to school, work, supermarkets, and restaurants in 15 minutes without a car

"move fast and break things" is notably less alluring when it applies to all of humanity. if you are developing technology that you openly state will radically alter humanity's course, you have a responsibility to do it slowly and safely in order to ensure you get it right.
