🧵My favorite thing about working at
@Hou_Landing
was how supportive everyone was. Every Friday, we did
#shoutoutFridays
and it was so inspiring to see everyone supporting each other. I can't take part in this ritual internally anymore, so I'm doing it here.
No power for 2 days.
No water since yesterday.
Smelled gas inside and outside the house so called 9-1-1 — they never came.
Sat outside for three hours with three dogs until we finally reached center point emergency line.
Technicians come out — major gas leak
Plumbers aren’t available to fix the problem until the weekend.
Meanwhile trying to work in the dark, in the cold, with the hot spot on my phone.
Everything is terrible. Stay safe out there, Texas.
@jenradcliffe
They shut the gas off so we are no longer going to blow up. I’m currently under about 40 blankets in bed with my dogs, eating French fried onions from a can.
I was raped 10 yrs ago in the backseat of a stranger’ SUV.
This is the scariest thing I’ve ever written — about how you never quite feel like you’ve survived it.
About how hard it is to write about rape when you’re still haunted by your own

Anyone who knows anything about me knows I would never sign an NDA. I work in the business of transparency and I was so disappointed and offended in
@peterbhatia

@Hou_Landing
Today, as part of what the
@Hou_Landing
CEO called a company “reset,” I was fired . This is not what I wanted. When I asked why, I was given no conclusive answer. I’m proud of the work we’ve done under

in the six months since we launched.

@HoustonChron
reporters JUST got the OK to say this on the internet. We've been fighting for this for some time.
So when you see an influx of these tweets from us ... that is why.
Reading
@feliciasonmez
' lawsuit and literally crying. Everything that happened to her at
@washingtonpost
is what I feared FOR YEARS would happen to me at paper's if I disclosed my assault.
There are no 2 sides to this issue. Sexual assault is bad and also illegal
It's absolutely sickening to watch all these news orgs not only reporting on Ted Cruz' daughter's suicide attempt, but naming her -- A MINOR.
It's no one's business. And using the reasoning that he is a public official is an unacceptable excuse.
Israel is on track to attempt a lunar landing Thursday and, I gotta say, I'm HELLA excited.

What

is experiencing at

is exactly what I was terrified would happen when I was writing about

What the post is doing to her is absolutely horrifying

My final act at
@Hou_Landing
, though I didn’t know it would be at the time, was to go through 200 obituaries to make this list. People's stories matter. People’s lives matter.
We did good work
@MarieDennise
. I love you.
No one had truly quantified how prevalent this problem was until
@alexdstuckey
created a comprehensive database.
She collected documents from across Texas to discern how many people had a documented mental health concern before they died from unnatural causes in a jail.
In 2019, I stumbled across a murder case at state mental hospital. That case revealed a system in crisis, where the mentally ill languish for a year in jail; where deaths are rarely investigated by
@CMSGov
; where families receive no answers
@HoustonChron
I feel physically ill.
I am horrified just thinking about the chilling effect this is going to have to survivors in newsrooms across the U.S.

Dear media,
#DeshaunWatson
was accused of sexual assault, not sexual misconduct.
These are very different things. Please get it right.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
Honestly, still cannot believe this happened yesterday.
I am so honored and humbled by this recognition and I hope that it will bring more attention to the broken mental health system in the United States.
We can and should treat our mentally ill neighbors better.
I got fired without cause or explanation ~2 weeks ago and the hardest part of it all is knowing that
@MarieDennise
and I can’t do more work like this. We had huge plans for 2024.
I’m sorry, Marie, that we didn’t get more time. But damn was it incredible to share that byline.
🔍 A Houston Landing investigation found that nearly 200 people in Texas had been flagged as potentially mentally ill but died in jail instead of getting the care they needed.

Elizabeth Waller came to me with her story months ago —she was frustrated. She we heartbroken.
She wanted justice for her son.
The story she shared with me — backed up by hundreds of pages of medical records— left me absolutely speechless
@houstonchron
We want to speak up on this coverage, in a climate when training on writing about sexual assault is still severely lacking. But if we do, will we end up banned from that coverage in the future?
Will we end up like
@feliciasonmez
?
Houston! The day has finally come! I’m so excited to finally announce the launch of
@hou_landing
, a new, non-profit newsroom based in the city I’ve come to call home. I’m so excited to be the Landing’s founding investigative reporter!
I went public with my trauma in 2019. And ever since then I have been terrified that I will be barred from covering sexual assault -- or that I will be blacklisted from jobs in the future because of my trauma.
Happy Valentine’s Day to the man who supported my decision to not sign an overly broad NDA from
@Hou_Landing
despite three months severance tied to it. You’re a gem,
@theRobSlone
, and I’m so lucky to have you
I was sexual harassed as intern & know what it does 2 your psyche, how it cripples you professionally/emotionally, how long it takes 2 move on.
We don't yet know details of Matt Lauer's "inappropriate sexual behavior," but
@scrippsjschool
owes it 2 students 2 make sure they're OK
This news horrifies me, esp because
@scrippsjschool
sends interns to

BECAUSE of Matt Lauer.

With a 200k person waitlist, families are counseled to put their loved ones with intellectual and developmental disabilities on all 6 Medicaid waiver lists. What they’re not counseled for coming to the top of lists and being denied again and again

I was fired yesterday as the founding editor in chief of the

ANOTHER death at the Harris County Jail--that makes six this year.
I've been analyzing the deaths at the jail for the
@Hou_Landing
, a story I felt needed to be done after 27 people died there in 2022. Read my story here:
For years, I've been hearing about the long waitlist for IDD services. It was worse than I could have ever imagined.
There are 170,000 people waiting for care through Medicaid waiver programs. Some have been on the list for as long as 18 and 19 years.
My team and I have been working on this project since March. Starting Sunday, we'd appreciate it if y'all would read it.
@HoustonChron
@srileychronicle
Wow, y'all. Just wow.
I am so overwhelmed by everyone's support yesterday -- and their willingness to share their stories.
I tried to respond to everyone's messages, but y'all crashed my Twitter multiple times yesterday and it was hard to keep up.
Thank you. Just ... thank you
The # of public psychiatric hospital beds in Texas on a per-capita basis has declined 95% since 1955. With nowhere to go, more and more people ended up on the streets and, ultimately, in jail.

As an American journalist, you never expect:
1. Your own govt to lie to you, repeatedly
2. Your own govt to hide information the public has a right to know
3. Your own govt to spy on your communications
Trump's unAmerican regime did all of these.
No one should accept this.

I've been in therapy for 9 years. I spent 8 months in outpatient. I'm only still a journalist b/c one editor knew and worked with me. I'm on meds.
Talking about it on Twitter is good. Newsrooms normalizing mental health check-ins & breaks is better.
As a
