As promised, I’m hitting the ground running on DAY ONE! Today I was official took office as District 25’s State Assemblymember and immediately introduced my first bill to root out corporate special interest money in our democracy.
Here's what it'll do:
I introduced AB387 w/
@BuffyWicks
today to establish Social Housing for California
Social Housing is how we provide housing as a human right
Publicly developed, maintained, and owned housing for Californians of all socioeconomic levels is the key to solving our housing crisis
Today, we introduced AB 413 to institute daylighting to improve public safety. CA’s pedestrian fatality rate is more than 25% higher than the national average. Daylighting is an important measure that increases visibility of pedestrians & bicyclists at crosswalks & intersections
What happens when you make it explicit policy goal that your residents can afford a home?
~$1100 a month, 4 bedroom flat for a young family of three
this wasn't even the largest
#socialhousing
unit in this 5 story building
How to mitigate climate change, conserve nature, and house people all at once. A better, sustainable world is possible — and must if we want a habitable & affordable future
As disgusting as it is to hear some of LA’s top public officials spout so cruelly and casually racist, anti black comments… don’t forget its their pretenses for gerrymandering to hold onto power. This is morally bankrupt and corrupt
California is set to make its own insulin.
Many Americans pay anywhere from $300 - $500 per month for insulin.
With CA’s insulin, that cost would - at a minimum - be cut in HALF.
People should not go in into debt to get life-saving medication.
Anyone deserves to live anywhere.
Really sad that’s a controversial opinion in blue CA. We need housing where people want to live — not just where the rich deem the poor deserve to live
I’m angry. We passed
#AB1487
to create eviction defense fund bc legal aid is the *last resort* to keeping working families housed
@GavinNewsom
’s veto is wrong & cruel. We already failed renters by not extending the pause on evictions. Now we deny them any help in court
The high cost of living & housing is why people leave CA. It's NOT because we don't cater to eccentric billionaires and mega-corporations enough. The state has always done way more for the rich than it ever has for working families
Car Culture's double standards:
Empty highways? So great, no traffic!
Empty bike lanes? What a waste, no one even bikes!
Full car every trip? ugh so cramped
Full bus every trip? expected norm
This isn’t abstract for me. I don’t have to try to understand what it’s like for people who struggle to pay their bills or with housing insecurity, that’s something I live with.
And yes I know a thing or two about how app-based work SUCKS
in improv comedy and being pro-housing, there's just one rule to follow: "yes and—"
✅ yes social housing and
✅ yes renter protections and
✅ yes ending exclusionary zoning and
✅ yes upzoning and
✅ yes this policy AND more
Hey! I'm a 25-year-old queer progressive running for CA Assembly District 25. Despite being outspent 15 to 1 & not taking any corporate $$, we won a Democratic primary. Now I've got to beat a conservative Rep
Can you help our grassroots campaign by RT'ing and following?😊🌹
Land Value Tax would fix this
I introduced AB 362 to officially study the benefits/impacts of a statewide land value tax which would provide fairer assessments, boost housing supply, and give more freedom to landowners to build on properties without the fear of increasing taxes
We just passed a constitutional amendment to guarantee abortion access. We can’t control what happens in other states, but we damn well will ensure Californians and Americans from other states can come & receive vital reproductive healthcare
It’s time we create Social Housing for all in CA!
Today I introduced
#AB2053
w/
@AsmCarrillo
,
@SantiagoAD53
, and
@Scott_Wiener
to build and preserve housing for the social good — not for profit
Help us realize housing as a human right by going to:
It’s not every day that we provide immediate relief to our constituents with our votes. We just passed
#SB118
to protect the admission of thousands of students to Berkeley — and all public colleges. We’ll always keep the door open for all that pursue higher ed
the future is transit orientated & walkable communities plus a renaissance of transit and micro mobility options
so what we had pre cars and car infrastructure tearing thru our cities!!
Every voter just wants to hear three words: I Like Trains
This election be sure to vote pro-transit: it's good for traffic, good for your health, and good climate policy
#NUMTOT
#trainsarecool
#gayfortransit
Remember to vote by June 7!
No one bats an eye when we sink billions of more dollars into subsidized freeways & roads for cars with no direct financial ROI, but the moment we talk about free & frequent transit people lose their minds
An infuriating aspect of suburbia is the fact that most mega-lots are wasted space: water sucking lawns, heat sink cement, just outdoor storage, driveways you can land a helicopter on. That's wasted space homes could be on!!!
Imagine this: withdrawing your UBI check that was seamlessly deposited in your public banking account after picking up your kids from awesome public school and then taking green transit back home to your social housing flat
A future we can make happen
📶Single Stair Case Bill Intro'd
Requiring 2 staircases for buildings over 3 floors makes homes more costly and hinders housing development. I introduced AB 835 to study & develop new standards to legalize
#singlestair
units in California
We just passed our Social Housing Act
#AB2053
out of committee!! One step closer to realizing beautiful, mixed income neighborhoods for all built for social good, not profit
a car hit mine on the highway (I’m ok)
last week a childhood family friend lost his life in a highway collision
last month my brother’s car was totaled in a crash
When I say I hate driving - it’s because injury & death are too normalized. I hate having to risk it every time
Alameda County Democrats just endorsed my bill AB20: to ban all candidates in CA from taking corporate money!
Thanks for being the first local Democrats to join the fight to root out corporate special interest money in our democracy
#acdemmtg
Happy to announce I was appointed to be the Chair of the Select Committee on Social Housing!
In addition to
#AB2053
I’m excited to host hearings and field trips to help build the vision of social housing for all
NEWS:
@ChinoValleyUSD
Board voted last night to adopt a policy that will forcibly out trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming students to their families without consent. This is dangerous and puts these youth in harm’s way. Full statement here:
A Hindu temple was vandalized in my district. While I’m glad the community is coming together in the aftermath - let’s be clear that all forms of hate & hindupbohia should be condemned
California's budget surplus is neither bottomless nor indefinite. We have a **one time** opportunity to invest in the future -- not waste it on temporary whims
Supply-Side Progressivism is great because it uses the fundamental achilles' heel of capitalism against capitalism: market competition
the more producers of essential goods (esp those that produce at-cost or lower for social benefit not profit!!) the lower market prices get!
Y’all I got arrested
I was talking to media and
#SJPD
arrested me and a legal observer. No warning just took me in. The curfew is an excuse to harass protestors wtf
Meet Alex Lee of San Jose. At 25 years old, he's the youngest CA State Legislator in more than 80 years. He won District 25 in the Assembly, filling the seat vacated by Kansen Chu.

WATCH HERE:
I’m extremely disappointed that
#AB309
, The Social Housing Act, has been vetoed by the Governor.
Thank you to our bill’s sponsor
@eb4everyone
and all the diverse coalition of supporters
SO thrilled to announce that
@BernieSanders
has endorsed our grassroots campaign for CA State Assembly district 25!
Let's carry on the political revolution in California!!
You’d think racism fueled gerrymandering is a thing you’d hear from the South — not the South of CA
No more hollow half hearted apologies. They all need to resign
When the next recession hits, private housing production will plummet
Social Housing must fill the gap when we need affordable homes built & preserved the most.
#AB2053
is my top priority. I will fight like hell to get it through the finish line
Republicans want to honor an entire year after Nancy Reagan. Completely absurd to praise someone who escalated the war on drugs & let the AIDS crisis ravage the LGBTQ+ community. Reagans deserve no commemoration
I told the Assembly “Just say NO”
It's only August and I've personally known TWO elected officials with long histories of public service who had their life cut short by a car. Both times they were pedestrians and both were struck by a car
The danger of our streets is too real, folks
Big Real Estate and Corporate Landlords have spent more than $700,000 on a smear campaign in an attempt to unseat me in less than one month. Why? Because I dare to fight for pro-housing and pro-renter protections at the same time
Disappointingly
#AB2053
did not advance out of committee today. I remain committed actualizing Social Housing in California as the pivotal tool to guaranteeing housing as a human right
my full statement here
"Yesterday was a really bad day for him and this is what he did" -- a law enforcement official explains Robert Aaron Long's decision to kill 8 people in a strange manner
The Social Housing Act
#AB309
just passed the Assembly Housing Committee!
One step closer to creating a public developer to build beautiful, mixed income affordable communities in CA
Every injustice you raged against these past 4 years will *not* suddenly vanish tomorrow. The next round in fighting for progress, for the people, is just starting. You in?
a common complaint I see related to homelessness is trash buildup, but please consider how much trash would pile up for a HOUSED person if there was not efficient garbage service
we can clean up our streets w/o sweeping away people
If you grew up in the suburbs like me, you prob didn’t realize there’s a diversity of home options like duplexes. Why?
Single family ZONING prevents any of that diversity.
#SB9
&
#SB10
are 2 modest bills to help that. I look forward to voting on them!
The one thing I really love about Sacramento is how incredibly walkable it is. I can walk miles and it never feels dull + get everything I need. Almost never need a car. Every city should be like this
Interesting things to note:
- Lower Austria (the state in the country) has 70% homeownership rate
- most of the state's social housing has right to purchase after 5 years, boosting homeownership opps
- explicit goal to house young adults and new families
This image comes from Singapore which has 87% of it's population living in public, social housing. If we want CA to be an equal land of opportunity, we must do everything in our power to keep housing affordable
coincidentally this was published today too
We passed
#SB9
today because we need every solution on the table to solve the housing crisis. Gently upzoning suburbia is common sense
I know what it's like to see homeownership only as a dream and what it's like to cram multi-generations into one house out of economic necessity
