1/ recruiting for a startup is really, really tough. for young founders who may not have built teams or managed people yet in their career, it can be even harder 🧵
1/ last quarter, i met with 114 engineers, made 86 introductions, & closed 6 candidates for portfolio companies. while each conversation is unique in its own way, there's one topic comes up without fail: the mysterious role of a “founding engineer” 🔮
six weeks ago, i had a crazy idea to build & open-source a project that used as many YC W23 companies as possible
in honor of demo day, i’m excited to launch the project & share some takeaways 🤗
after today, my
@basecasevc
hours change from weeknights + weekends to ‼️ weekdays ‼️ + weeknights + weekends
(in other words... i’m going full-time!!!)
a big thank you
@eladgil
@tonsing
@avichal
@ankrgyl
& everyone else who has made this possible 🙏🏽
met my husband (
@ankrgyl
) 6 years ago today
we met at red door coffee in soma (rip) courtesy of
@tonsing
's blind intro 🙈
the takeaway? say yes to the damn coffee chat 😆
3/ instead, i encourage founders to proactively build relationships with potential candidates to make them fall in love with the product, the opportunity, and the team over time. be patient, but persistent 💪🏼
it’s YC S23 demo day, which means it’s launch day here at
@basecasevc
every batch, we build an open-source project using the coolest dev tools & AI products we can get our hands on
i'm excited to share what we’ve been working on 🤗
I used
@alanaagoyal
's AI-based brand generation tool and it's shockingly good.
It coined 'brainy' and generated this cool logo in a couple seconds 😁 Quite the head-start to get your idea into the world.
it’s the first day of YC S23, which means it’s time for me to start building a new project that uses as many of the companies in the batch as possible 🧡
5/ first, optimize for excellence. never pass up on the opportunity to meet an amazing candidate just because they don't fit a current opening. if you're not hiring for a role today, you may very well be tomorrow.
2/ you will rarely meet the perfect candidate for a role *because* they are actively on the market, although sometimes the universe can be pretty magical and surprise us 💫
just wrapped up another quick trip to nyc and realized that >50% of my meetings were with people from
@tryramp
this company is a magnet for young, scrappy talent and actually steps out of the way to let them build (unlike many companies of their size)
11/10 would recommend
24 hours since launching :
-11.5k names created
-4.4k site visitors (from 79 different countries 🇵🇭)
-350 domains suggested
-200 logos generated
will be shipping the most requested feature later this afternoon 🚀
in 2018, i interned at
@greylockvc
and was lucky enough to have
@saammotamedi
take me under his wing. since then, he's been my first call & favorite person to collaborate with on the most ambitious enterprise businesses.
so stoked to have him join us in building
@braintrustdata
!
update: couldn't do it
superhuman features i can't live without:
-instant intros
-read receipts
-snippets
-variables
-quick links (highlight + ⌘v to paste)
-good ux 🙃
7/ second, ask for feedback. identify a few “dream candidates” and reach out to get their feedback on the role. ask who they would hire. then ask if they can introduce you to those people 🙃
excited to launch today 💫
in honor of
@supabase
's off-site next week, i built them an open-source, ai-enabled fan page (using
@supabase
, of course)
take a look & show them some love 🥰
my heart goes out to all of the founders & fund managers dealing with the ramifications of svb’s insolvency 💔
i’m making myself 100% available this weekend to anyone who needs help navigating the situation - please reach out via email or text
if you’re an early stage founder who hasn’t sent an investor update in a while: just do it
once you drop off, it feels overwhelmingly hard to get back into it, but you just have to do it
Bill Hader on receiving feedback: "when people tell you something is wrong, they're usually right. when they tell you how to fix it, they're usually wrong."
one week since launching :
-19.5k names created
-9.1k unique site visitors
-690 domains suggested
-415 logos generated
-3 new features shipped (bring your own name, trademark checks, shortcuts)
-1 major rebrand 💅🏼
last week, i hosted a small, all-female group of CTOs from leading enterprise software companies including
@splunk
@amplitude_hq
@pilothq
@stytchauth
@_hex_tech
& more to discuss their current priorities & challenges
sharing my biggest takeaways below 👀
stated differently: one trait i've noticed in *successful companies* is *a high density of individuals* who obsess over bug reports and respond to customer feedback with zero ego (regardless of their role)
4/ now this sounds pretty hard to do, but with a few tricks, it’s not as difficult as you might think. here are a few that i’ve learned from working with founders at

this week alone, we had launches that:

🥇 climbed to the top of product hunt
go check them out & give us your feedback ✨
in the wrong market, you can do almost everything right and still fail
in the right market, you can get a lot of things wrong and still succeed
choose your market wisely
I used

8/ if founding engineer is a role you're interested in or have more questions about, definitely read my post:
i answer these questions in detail with real-life examples & anecdotes from

portfolio companies ⭐️
there’s a lot out there on why AI/ML companies fail, but not much on how to make them succeed. defensible ML is a simple framework that founders can use to reason about how to build an enduring company in the space:
9/ third, tap into relevant communities. find out who is writing about the problem you’re working on and who is reading & talking about those posts. reach out to ask their thoughts on the problem, the space, or the technology.
hot tip: when someone sends you a candidate, always close the loop
whether it's "this didn't end up being a fit" or "we just extended an offer!"
i promise they will send you more candidates 🤗
i know you’re not supposed to share wishes, but here i go:
last year on my birthday, my only wish was to raise a fund to be able to spend all of my time connecting with, investing in, & supporting founders
a year later, i couldn’t feel more grateful that my wish came true 💫
the plot thickens…
@namecheap
owns this trademark themselves!
their ToS states that if they receive a Takedown Notice, they will email a copy of the notice to the customer to provide them with the opportunity to submit a Counter-Notice
1/ The first 18 months of a startup:
After starting my 2nd company in 2019, I decided I would write down useful lessons I learned or re-learned along the way. Some were hard-earned & others required steady focus. A thread that I hope may help other founders starting out 👇
for dev tool founders, securing the npm package name for your startup is just as important as getting the domain
now you can use to do so in one click 🚀
