Our producers said it was about time for an official trailer...
Introducing, Sequence: Video editing, rebooted.
It's like Figma for video editing, by creators, for creators.
Bill Hader on receiving feedback: "when people tell you something is wrong, they're usually right. when they tell you how to fix it, they're usually wrong."
We know we’ve been a bit hush hush about what exactly we’re building as we work towards our upcoming alpha — so let’s talk a bit more about the vision behind Sequence.
now what if you could do those tasks with a UI that still maintains the composability and isolation of ffmpeg?
we've been tossing around an idea for a "workflow runner" that allows you to construct pipelines that can be run on the Sequence Cloud to transform media in bulk 👀
we're so excited to welcome Brian Williams as our new Chief Technology Officer! Brian is a true powerhouse in the NLE space and joins us after runs building the first versions of Avid followed by being Principle Architect of Adobe Premiere Pro
here's a few words from Brian!
as a team that builds tools for storytellers, filmmakers, & creatives alike, we're excited to share more of our story this year and how we're building the future of video production
here are a few words from our editor advocate, mylene 🎬
Apparently there's some big video editing software coming to ipad?
Sorry, I was busy hanging out in the timeline with my cross-device friends already.
You can hang with us too. On iPad, Mac, Windows, Chromebook, whatever.
~see you in the timeline~
so imagine figma for video editing, built by a bunch of movie nerds, obsessed with serving the needs of pro video creators — that's Sequence
and it's going great thanks for asking 🥰
"is the editing room your favorite place to be?"
"it's the one part of the process that i find is anti-entropic..."
greta gerwig and james cameron can come hang in the timeline any time
we've been so psyched building to a place where we can do most of our own production work in our own product and to celebrate we'll keep shoving silly little videos in your face like an expectant child with their drawing
broke: putting your entire marketing budget into booking a virtual production stage
woke: secretly filming product demos in the most gorgeous locations you can find until you get kicked out
comments on timecodes on a rendered video are old news.
Hot People in Post Production™ these days use comments that track along with changes in the edit.
Happy Halloween! Today's product update is packed full of treats 🎃
- Introducing: Timeline Packages — an escape hatch that allows you generate and download your sequence timeline & assets to open in
@Blackmagic_News
DaVinci Resolve (or any other app that supports OTIO)

when it comes to the role of ai in creation, we're interested in things that enhance the capabilities of the artist, not try to replace them.
the first step towards that is content intelligence — semantic understanding of all your visuals, audio, and metadata
in a world where you can generate anything your mind imagines, the ability to refine that down to the right vision is more important than ever. that's why the timeline matters. that's why montage theory holds up stronger than any individual generated video and always will.
some of the team has been hanging out at
#FCPCreativeSummit
this week and we're having a blast meeting so many incredibly creative people + getting inspired about ways to support and enhance the workflows of people using apple's video apps 🥰
we're working on getting back to more frequent, incremental updates and have 2 new quality-of-life improvements today that make a HUGE difference:
1. Tooltips! Letting you know what different parts of the app actually do
2. Rename your project by double clicking on the title!
100%, ai for video shouldn't be about a vision of "generative Netflix" that devalues creators, but more about enabling the rapid prototyping and iteration of video projects.
but, around here we just call that "The Sequence Method" 👀🎞️
ai-assisted video production should really be much less about generating content and more about storyboarding, scripting, audio generation, clip variations, etc
in an effort to make our ai editing copilot more human, it will now wait until you've locked down your final edit and then ask if you could try some different music tracks with it

"ideas are like fish... gang gang
if you want to catch little fish — mmmmmm ice cream so good — you can stay in the shallow water.
POP POP POP
but if you want to catch the big fish FIRE gang gang, you've go to go deeper...

Movie Magic comes entirely down to the talents of cast & crew. Today, we're excited to start growing Sequence's list of credits with 2 new roles we're casting:
- CTO, Video Systems
- The "John Wick of Frontend Engineering"
Oopsie daisy we were so excited about the weekend we forgot to give you Friday's update!
In 🌟 new features 🌟, snapping now occurs during skimming and while using the blade tool. Plus, up and down arrow keys allow you to navigate the timeline edit points.
what if you could use AI to generate voices for your temp audio mix in a sequence project?
thanks to
@GetSoundly
voice designer, it's now as easy as typing out what you want to hear, then dragging it right into your project 🤯
we're bringing out the main character energy in each sequence cast member 🎬
here's what our founding designer,
@parker_gibbons
has to say about our current philosophy of building
The timeline has been getting lots of love on some of the rough edges lately! Here's what's new:
- A small gap at the beginning of the timeline makes it easier to drag clips to the start
- Dragging & trimming clips off the edges will now scroll the timeline automatically
excuse me, do you have a moment to talk about the most beautiful filmmaking tool ever created and little known piece of star wars lore?
this is the story of the EditDroid (1/3)
yeah sex is cool but have you ever laid down some edits and then found that they accidentally line up to the beat in a cooler way that you ever thought to do yourself
what if i told you that we just really want to make movies and it turns out building a tech company is the option only slightly less complicated than navigating the studio system
big congrats 🎉 to
@ErikByargeon
for his one year anniversary at
@sequence_film
! Thanks for being the 1st to commit to this crazy ride with me. You’ve built some incredible stuff in a year (lookin at u auto viewport shift, chef tools) — it’s an honor to have you on the team👏🎬👏
Spring is in the air and the updates are raining down!
Here's what's new in Sequence:
- Background uploading
- Timeline exporting
- Frame stepping
- New inspector properties for layout, blending, and audio
- Keyframe animation 1.0
- ✨and more✨
hi mini life update: I start a new job today
@sequence_film
in a unique role called ‘editor advocate’ :)
stoked to make waves in multiplayer video editing & to empower creatives in new ways
cool product + cool team, feels like a win-win
This morning, go behind-the-scenes of how the Sequence team experimented with breaking down the typical production process for a new collaborative technology while making a killer cinematic movie trailer.... for an app.
(pushing changes to production 30 min before meeting with an investor)
@lucasmcgartland
"this is cutting things pretty close, team"
@ErikByargeon
"i grew up watching 24. you can do a lot in 30 minutes."
🚨 Job Alert 🚨
Sequence is expanding our crew with a new role for a Backend Software Engineer!
Come join a small and hardworking crew of film & video lovers to tackle the challenges of bringing high end video production to the web!
We posted a job description last week for a role that really doesn't exist today, and could probably use more clarification about what we're even up to. So we're gonna explain it the only way we know how…
🎥 New video essay! Diving Into Editor Advocacy @ Sequence:
happy holidays from the cast & crew of sequence 🥰 hope you get to watch a lot of cozy movies, and we can't wait to catch up with you in the timeline next year
help us settle a debate! we're working on adding @-mentions into commenting and we're torn on how to display users once you've decided to mention them.
assuming every user will have a @-handle and a user name, would you prefer to see their handle or their name in the UI?
In a nutshell, Sequence is building a cloud based, high-end, collaborative video editor. But more than building just a video editing app, our long-term vision is to be your creative, collaborative (super)computer in the cloud.
