not to mention university boards’ refuge for venture capital and political interest (often alt-right or zionist), the contraction of grad-program offerings and spots (colleges content to exist without courses or students), and the surrender to big tech (total, rapid AI thralldom)

an audit of academe’s trajectory these past 30 years—its operation according to business and not pedagogical models, interest in real estate, and the primacy of its sportsclubs—makes irresistible the counter view, that in fact universities are ground zero for anti-intellectualism
I’ve realized it’s almost impossible to avoid de-intellectualization once you leave the university scene. I try my best to read at least 15+ books a year, I take courses, volunteer etc. but there’s still nothing like the environment of a university which constantly engages you

this has been the case for awhile now, but the future of movies is not in America (where every good idea goes to die under capitalism’s stomping boot) but we do still have the rest of the world, as well as micro-budget cinema, which will be the only sources for real cinema.

On Godard's birthday (it would be his 95th), note that hardly any of his later work is streaming; his career, the very nature of his art, remains deep underground. In Praise of Love, one of his greatest films, is unavailable; look at the murderous reviews from its release here.

i was attending high school in an ethnic enclave of brooklyn then; feels like ages ago. i still carried loose change and, when i lacked it, scraped up enough for the bus fare or something from the corner store by rifling through my knapsack or scouring the streets for spare coins

today i watched as a man who had set up an easel at the intersection that my office overlooks painted in skilled watercolor the buildings, crowds, traffic, and trappings at the scene, even the few billboards, on the largest of which was a black model whom he opted to render white
