A fine day across #Antarctica's Weddell Sea shows #icebergs A-74, A-81, and A-83 that calved from the Brunt Ice Shelf in February 2021, January 2023, and May 2024, respectively. Interact with Suomi-NPP VIIRS thermal imagery using NASA's Worldview: https://t.co/qrlchiwO0o

Please tell me we're going to call it the #HalloweenBerg. Using the normal nomenclature (#A83) is so dull. This is the third large berg to come off the Brunt in three years. The decision of @BAS_News to move Halley base in 2016/17 looks ever smarter.

Another big iceberg breaks from in front of the UK's Halley research base - the third in three years.

A very good time to be a post doc studying the properties of ice fracturing on the Brunt Ice shelf!
Breaking news - literally..! There’s been a surprise #iceberg calving on the #Brunt Ice Shelf in Antarctica, near Halley Research Station. The berg is about the size of the Isle of Wight or Las Vegas. A section broke off at a 90° angle from a chasm called the “Halloween Crack”.

Brunt Ice Shelf has now calved 3 large icebergs in a little over 3 years. The animation shows past calving events from Sentinel-1 and Monday's 373 square km calving from the Suomi NPP VIIRS. Further animation to follow when Sentinel-1 captures a new image.

If you don't find this concerning, you really don't understand how bad things are getting. Yes, there's an El Niño at the moment, but the sea surface temperature anomaly has never been so extreme during previous El Niños. From @guardian article - link in following post.

📣 Double-whammy iceberg news this morning: 1️⃣ The largest iceberg, A23a, is on the move! Here's its journey out of the Weddell Sea after being grounded on the sea floor after calving in August 1986. Copernicus Sentinel-1 imagery, Google Earth Engine 👇

Last month, #Iceberg D30 passed very close to Elephant Island in the South Atlantic. The 'berg was big enough to be seen by @NOAASatellites GOES weather sat, almost 40000km away. Here's what it saw between 29th Aug and 22nd Sept.

Head over to @adrian_luckman. Using the sharp radar eye of #Sentinel1a, he can see new rifts opening near the Brunt's grounding line - the zone where the ice coming off the continent becomes buoyant.

Keep an eye on this. The ice under the UK's Halley research station in #Antarctica has rapidly increased in speed following the calving of big bergs. The base (currently unoccupied) is in no immediate danger but #Sentinel1a can see new rifts in the ice.

Scientists record an abrupt acceleration of floating ice hosting the Halley station, in Antarctica.
