Using the #PlatformWork Directive as a targeted springboard, we argue for a work-specific framework integrating data protection and employment legislation. If algorithms manage people and make high-stakes calls, context is everything.

Managerial prerogatives that are partially or fully automated span multiple dimensions. Hence, the full “dashboard” of labour law principles should be in place: justification of decisions, collective rights, transparency, outright bans and so on.

Our new draft paper “From ‘General’ to ‘Context-Specific’ Data Protection For Workers” unpacks why the #GDPR alone cannot tackle the realities of software-fueled workplace surveillance, discrimination risks, opacity and collective harms.

🚨 Algorithms governing the workplace on the EU radar? Both the European Parliament and the Commission are cautiously preparing the ground for a possible EU-level initiative on #algorithmicmanagement in the workplace. Big. And timely.
