1/ MONEY BY VILE MEANS Over 10 years in the making and one of Compact's longest essays ever. This is my definitive deep dive guide to critique Bitcoin. From libertarian ideal to cynical state capture, I debunk the myths of Bitcoin and reveal its dark reality.
“Bitcoiners are unable to acknowledge their dependence on the state.” Read Peter Ryan’s @_PeterRyan piece in COMPACT:

Morning, I've just got an early Christmas present - a lovely review of the US edition of "Money" in @WSJ by the economics legend Jim Grant of @GrantsPub - one of the true greats in our business. I'm honoured and delighted you enjoyed the book. 👇 https://t.co/PjzrAbMyEb

Money is one of humanity’s greatest inventions. But crises of credit have been with us since ancient times.

I agree with much of the content. But it’s never optimal to have too many eggs in one basket. Liberal PM Carney (with a map of county Mayo in his office) is diversifying Canada’s trade and not putting up with bullying tactics from America. Seems like something Ireland could take
I don’t think @TedSmyth is any fan of President Trump but we maintain ties with countries not governments. The idea that we should turn our backs on our most important economic partner is, frankly, risible.

How much of American GDP growth has been tech bubbles post-COVID?
Trying to do some synthesis on the perpetually ongoing EU-US growth discourse here: 1) Undeniable at this point that the US economy has grown faster than the EU as a whole over the last 6 years. The US has grown ~5% more on a per-capita basis since pre-COVID. But importantly,

‘Don’t listen to reports of Ireland’s demise’. A link to my contribution to @WSJopinion correcting the falsehoods about #Ireland peddled by British commentator Dominic Green earlier in the week. Thanks to @WSJ for giving me space to set the record straight.

Maybe because more supply in a financialized, investor-driven market doesn't actually reduce price? 🏘️

Here we go: real wages just fell for the first time since 2022. We got quarterly ECI this morning, which economists and the Fed follow closely for wage trends, and for Q3 it fell below inflation. This is as inflation picks up, and the labor market and wages further weaken.

Manufacturing productivity growth has collapsed right across the industrialized world. I feel like Brenner and Riley would've been on firmer ground with a narrower periodization (and focus on post-GFC stagnation rather than post-1970) and had they looked directly at productivity
This curve is not supposed to do this. This is the beating heart of tradables where productivity is supposed to grow exponentially. It may falter for a year or two, but a decade long decline means something has gone terrible wrong.

The billions being spent in the AI boom aren't solving California's tech job market because 1) investment money is not generating many coding jobs 2) the problem is primarily local (lack of new housing & general high cost of living) rather than cyclical https://t.co/uZTKphm3Yf

New definition of capitalism just dropped
@_PeterRyan I think it's a bit of both. Someone in his position is there because they believe whatever they need to, not because they think critically about everything.

Is he cynically spreading slopaganda or is he just this dumb?
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang says, “Essentially, Bitcoin mining is taking excess energy and storing it into a new form. It's called currency. And you take that currency wherever you like. So you took energy from one place and now you've transported it everywhere.”
