I have *such* strong feelings about this.
A “fixer” is a derogatory term/concept. It protects a hierarchy that permits the unfair treatment of highly qualified people – often from minorities or with less power – and for “big” names to rise on the networks/talent of others.
The whole concept of a "fixer" is outdated – in-country journalists should be given equal credit with staff teams, even if by necessity they are freelance. They should also get equal training and protections.
