Congrats to Shixian @Linlab_ZJU on this paradigm-shiftimg work. Unnatural amino acid incorporation using rare codons. Really COOL!!

🔊Check out our work in @ScienceMagazine. We identify a new weak point (TCG codon) in the codon table of mammalian cells and recode it into non-canonical amino acids (ncAAs) with impressive efficiency and selectivity. This strategy, rare codon recoding (RCR), is very different!

How long and how much it takes from idea to publication? Here is my tale of three molecules that I designed more than 11 years ago.

Great to visit @TheCrick institute for the first HKU-Crick symposium together with many colleagues from @hkusbms @hkumed @hku_science. As the only chemist in the symposium, I am glad to learn lots of new frontier biology.

Our work w/ @Aumeier_Lab, @unige_en and many others @EPFL_CHEM_Tweet & @epflSV, out in @NatureChemistry, where we produce tubulins with defined PTMs and demonstrate that polyE primes MTs for detyrosination: https://t.co/7nSvlykTSf; big congrats to 1st authors Eduard and Simon!

I checked it out. Indeed, the authors (the first and/or the last) are mentioned for every piece of work discussed in this article, except for us. Instead, we are mentioned as "a team of Hong Kong University" or "Hong Kong team"

My students asked me "why only our names are selectively missed when our work is discussed in this article? Is it because that we are doing science in Hong Kong but not in the US?" @metricausa @naturemethods

I would like to share with you our new work on the identification of the first bona fide 'reader' of #histone H3K79 methylation, which has been a mystery since the discovery of this modification in 2002. https://t.co/xPfNz2VQTg today online in @ScienceMagazine

Although it was a quite long and tough journey from idea to publication for these three molecules (in fact, for most of my projects), I still insist on not stopping at the proof-of-concept studies, but establishing robust and useful methodology to answer real biological questions

He developed a method for selectively labeling of bacterial proteome using photo-ANA, which enables simultaneous analysis of bacterial proteome reprogramming and pathogen-host protein interactions of Salmonella Typhimurium during infection.

Photo-ANA was also synthesized by Tangpo after he made photo-lysine. So it was synthesized in 2015 and Xiaomeng spent next 7 years to explore and demonstrate its applications to address meaningful biological questions.
