Writing a thesis was one of the most joyful and intellectually stimulating parts of my undergrad years!. I can’t imagine starting a PhD without it - even if a replication might’ve been more useful for the world.
all MSc Econ theses should mandatorily be replication exercises. i’m sorry but 95% (lower bound) of them are not turning into published papers. students would learn a lot more and provide a service to the profession.
