Sound on. The #refugee children and teachers were so keen to start classes as soon as the classrooms were built, even before all the teaching supplies had been delivered. Listen to the reaction when #girls and #boys saw blackboards being delivered. #thingswetakeforgranted

Today, 5 years on from our humble beginnings, I pass the torch over as Country Director to my successor. It's been a honour to lead our team, and I continue to be humbled by the courage and ingenuity of Sudanese civilians across the country. Last year, overcoming immense

Carter’s run as elder statesman and moral ambassador is sorely missed, and should be celebrated. His indefatigable pursuit of peace, human rights, and shelter, sets aspirational standards for all world leaders.
Jimmy Carter, the 39th US president who served one term and went on to become a globe-trotting elder statesman and humanitarian icon, has died. He was 100. Read more: https://t.co/hjliVfRjDO

It’s tough to see a short-term scenario playing out where this will get any better under the status quo—hundreds of thousands of civilians in catastrophic phases of hunger, now in five areas and seventeen more areas at risk. The humanitarian response must adapt now.

At its epicentre, through collaboration we’re continuing to strive as much as possible to bring food into besieged, famine-stricken IDP settlements such as Zamzam camp in North Darfur. So far, over 500 tons of food aid have been distributed, to help thousands of families.
A third round of food aid for starving displacement sites in North #Darfur 🇸🇩 is ongoing, for over 10,600 families, through our collaboration between local partner, regional authorities, national suppliers & international solidarity. ~ Thanks to @UNOCHA_Sudan #Humanitarian Fund

Independent, technical analysis of the hunger catastrophe in Sudan projects its worsening and expansion. The world must now redouble all efforts to respond to this emerging famine, helping all civilians in all areas of the country struggling to survive.
Famine Review Committee Alert❗ 🚨 #FAMINE EXPANDS IN SUDAN 🇸🇩 Latest @theIPCinfo findings show that Sudan continues to slide into a widening #Famine crisis characterized by widespread starvation and a significant surge in acute malnutrition. The IPC Famine Review Committee

Tragic that it’s come to this. Even more tragic is where this is headed. More international cooperation, not less, is needed to immediately improve the life chances of millions of Sudanese people affected by conflict and hunger. https://t.co/Q5X2NgNbJ3

Not every day does a Foreign Sec call directly, encouraging frontline humanitarian efforts in the worst of crises! Grateful for the call! Aid work can be dangerous, exhausting & stressful. We don’t do it for appreciation, but the journey is less wearisome when we feel supported.
Frontline work never stops. This Christmastime, @DavidLammy called aid workers to thank them for their efforts to solve the most pressing crises we're facing. Tanya, Will and Harriet spoke about working in Ukraine, Sudan and Gaza, and their hopes for 2025.

Locally-led relief efforts are a lifeline for so many people in #humanitarian need across #Sudan. We’re proud to have provided them over 1000 micro-grants by end of 2024. Though those same civilian volunteers—often youth—face many risks. So, more than funding, they need safety.
#WorldHumanitarianDay, a day to recognise #aid workers harmed while helping people in crisis. Today I recognise the sacrifices of #local responders in #Sudan, and call for clearer assurances for their #protection—they face many unacceptable #safety risks while delivering #relief.

Update: e-voucher distribution in South #Kordofan #Sudan is almost done, with over 20,000 people now redeeming them for items their families really need in many different stores. Even in isolated areas, combining Sudanese ingenuity and tech innovations together create solutions.
This week in #Kordofan 🇸🇩 we’re distributing humanitarian relief through e-vouchers in Kadugli for about 25,000 people, who redeem codes with local traders for what they most need. Grateful this response in a neglected area is building momentum. Further uplift thanks to 🇩🇪🇪🇺🇳🇴

Cogent explainer of re-emerging famine in Darfur, and fatal delays of an ineffective response system. The conflict & hunger situation in Sudan will worsen still next year, while the international humanitarian response trails behind; now it must urgently be adapted & energised.
In Sudan’s Zamzam displaced persons camp, children were dying for months before it was found to be in famine. Here’s how the world’s hunger monitoring-and-response system is supposed to work – and why it’s not achieving its mission https://t.co/LENS9I4lbP

2025 Global #humanitarian plan appeals for $47B to help 190M people, which is about $130M per day. Staggeringly high, but also relatively small—every day the world drinks $895M tea 🫖 & coffee ☕️ , or smokes $2.9B cigarettes!
I launch the Global Humanitarian Overview for 2025, my first as Emergency Relief Coordinator, with shame, dread and hope. Here’s why. https://t.co/QXkuBccAoP

Our teams still working to respond to people who fled into Gedaref from atrocities in Al-Gezira. Another five thousand survivors being assisted with relief supplies and multipurpose cash this week, thanks to 🇪🇺🇩🇪 The scale of internal displacement in #Sudan is extreme.
Over 135k people fled atrocities in Al-Gezira 🇸🇩. Our + partner teams quickly assessed #humanitarian needs (🔗) in Al-Fao: -5/6 don’t have survival #food -2/3 have no #shelter -almost all lack clean #water Mobilising rapid response now, thanks to 🇪🇺 https://t.co/GMpoi3wkwj

Happy that we continue to scale up our work to provide vulnerable civilians in the isolated city of Kadugli, #Kordofan with #humanitarian support via e-voucher & local traders. Currently over 5,000 people already supported; now tripling this number thanks to 🇩🇪 @GermanyDiplo

NRC with partners are preparing imminently for a third round of food aid to 11,000 families in besieged & famine-stricken (& now shelled) Zamzam displacement camp, this time with UN funding. The food aid via Port Sudan will also expand to the Al Salam and Abu Shok IDP sites.

The current attack has been predicted for some weeks now. Despite warnings, and some high-level discussion, no decisive action was taken or agreement reached. All states must redouble problem-solving efforts to protect civilians at risk of attack across Sudan.
Schools, mosques, civilian infrastructure damaged in besieged El-Fasher, North #Darfur. At the same time, numbers of displaced people in nearby Zamzam camp swell, and brace for assault. Difficult to see anything other than ‘spare no quarter’ scenarios. Civilians must be protected

The RSF must stand down this atrocious assault on Zamzam camp and end any siege warfare. All usage of explosive weaponry in populated areas, not least against displacement camps, must cease. The international community must urgently move to protect civilians in #Sudan.
🛑 ALERT from @MSF in #Zamzam Camp, North #Darfur 🛑 Sudan’s largest displacement site is under attack with intense shelling by RSF since yesterday evening. The attack has created a living nightmare for the displaced people in Zamzam camp, with casualties, panic and mass

Another excellent executive decision—all efforts enabling #humanitarian aid reaching civilians, including in #Kordofan, are much needed. Look forward to rejoining our team in Kadugli, who’re providing #cash & vouchers support + support to #agricultural & #education sectors.
Happy to announce, in line with our continued humanitarian efforts, all relevant UN agencies will be permitted to establish supply hubs in El Obeid , Kadugli , and Ad-Damazin. UN personnel will also be authorised to accompany convoys and oversee aid distribution.
