A thread 🧵of various YouTube bits and bobs that I've found interesting, hopefully to be added to indefinitely (if no doubt erratically).

Also, on the "they will retire five years earlier than us" thing, the French system is speeding towards a demographic cliff edge even worse than ours is and everyone in government knows this but can't summon up the political capital to do anything about it.

Such a silly tweet. Wealthy middle aged people poasting from their holidays in Brittany may think we don't need economic growth, but poor and young people know that both the UK and France are crying out for much more of it!.

(to be clear, prawn cocktail and Viennetta are actually good - unlike avocado, which manages to combine a weirdly high fat content with tasting of nothing).

I'm old enough to have been a kid at a time when avocados were viewed as cringey boomer slop for 70s throwbacks who thought prawn cocktail and Viennetta were fancy dinner party foods.

Or that having some of our core urban areas going 50-60% foreign born at a sprint presents an integration problem. Thinking this stuff *isn't* a problem would have been considered crackers under the Blair government!.

There's no real inconsistency between thinking that an artificial sub-100,000 cap is both too tight and counter-productive and also thinking that adding the equivalent of the population of Edinburgh every year with no infrastructure or houses to keep up with demand is crackers.

I'm not a Jenrick fan and I'm still to the left of him on this, but I was a certified immigration liberal both during the Cameron era and 2017 (and indeed later) and the blunt reality is that things have changed massively. Going "He was liberal in 2017!" is Bourbon monarchy stuff.

This comment from Amber Rudd is baffling 👇. Cameron himself said net migration should be under 100,000 / year. How is saying it should be lower than *literally ten times that* now "right-wing zealotry"?. Politics of vibes not truth, facts or data. From NS Lambert long read

@afneil It's also not true. Every member of Starmer's Cabinet went to university except for Angela Rayner. Very few had working-class jobs before becoming MPs. In MacDonald's 1st Cabinet, about half had limited formal education and worked in blue-collar jobs before becoming MPs.

It just seems crackers to me to have an education/employment landscape in which people are getting postgrad degrees at vast expense in order to end up doing basic clerical work at a provincial primary school. But I am assured by very clever people that I am wrong and stupid.

still worked at the school and they had a space for somebody to work in the office and the landscape was then such that they were binning anybody who didn't have a 2:1. By the mid 2010s, one of the primary schools near me was hiring people with Master's degrees to do admin. [2/2].

Another from the "billionth time I've said this" file, but I remember when I was at school in the 90s, the school office was basically staffed by people who came under the category "somebody's mum". When I was at university in the mid-2000s, I got talking to somebody who [1/?].

Peter Turchin warned of “elite overproduction”: too many graduates chasing too few jobs. Now it’s fuelling a political uprising — led not by the poor, but by the priced-out professionals. My column on the Mamdani moment:-.
