Today’s most transformative medicines exist because of fundamental discoveries that were made without regard to practical outcome. Their relevance to therapeutics only appeared decades later. This articles provides some compelling examples. 🔽

Many immune evasion strategies to protect SC-islets from transplantation rejection employ CD47 overexpression, while this new paper suggests CD47 negatively impacts beta cell function. Clearly many of such strategies warrant more detailed studies.

CD47 limits insulin secretion in human and mouse pancreatic β cells and adversely affects islet transplantation outcome and development of diabetes.

Transporting a secretory vesicle to the cell surface?
This clip shows a kinesin, a motor protein that moves molecules around the cell. It's powered by ATP and transport molecules along microtube filaments at a rate of 2000 nm/s [“The Inner Life of the Cell”: https://t.co/aHMSHOoUYe]

What about review panels for the NIH or other funding agencies?! How often anyone remember serving in a panel with an African American, Native American, Latino, Hispanic, or non-white colleague? In my case probably twice in 30 years😡 Tell your SRO!!!
Non-White scientists appear on fewer editorial boards and spend more time under review, according to a study of 1 million research articles. Results reveal the extent of inequalities underrepresented researchers face in science publishing. In PNAS: https://t.co/8IBgbyXReY
