I've written to @ShabanaMahmood to ask for urgent clarification on the prisoner recall policy change. There are no easy answers to the prison crisis – but I am genuinely struggling to understand why this group of serious offenders has been targeted for early release | 1/2
Proposed changes to prison recall will see most recalled offenders serve just 28 days, even if previously assessed as high-risk. I’m urging the government to reconsider whether this is a responsible or proportionate way to manage pressure on the prison estate. My statement 👇

Processing what happened and finding a way forward after crime can be incredibly difficult. As #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek draws to a close, important reminder that victims don't have to carry this burden alone. Victim support services and mental health organisations can help:
A gentle reminder for anyone who needs it: No matter what you’re going through, you don’t have to face it alone 💚 #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek

Enjoyed speaking in support of #FairerTaxforFraudVictims at yesterday's @investfraudcom event. Treating fraud victims like tax avoiders is retraumatising, unjust and unnecessary. I'll continue calling on @hmtreasury and @HMRCgovuk for this to change.

Today's @ukhomeoffice £20m funding boost offers much-needed relief to specialist victim services – many of which are under significant strain. But long-term funding for victims remains uncertain, with services facing cuts - something the upcoming Spending Review must address.

Today's reforms are a welcome step toward restoring public trust in our police forces – and reaffirming the values they must uphold. I hope these changes will kick much needed cultural change into gear, ensuring only those worthy of the badge can serve.
Nearly all police officers serve communities with integrity, but there must be accountability when they fall short. Removing those found guilty of offences like sexual assault from forces will ensure that.

Offenders shouldn’t get to choose whether they face victims at sentencing. Good speaking to @GMB earlier about these and other important measures introduced in today’s Victims and Courts Bill - improving the victim experience and bolstering the Victims Commissioner’s role.
Judges will be able to hand down punishments to criminals who refuse to attend their sentencing hearings under plans being considered today in Parliament. Courts will be able to use ‘reasonable’ physical force on offenders or the threat of increased jail time and loss of

This National Stalking Awareness Week, let’s celebrate the vital work of Stalking Advocates and other victim services. Amid funding uncertainty, they deliver invaluable services to victims and the criminal justice system. @live_life_safe. My words:

Thank you for a great event. Impressed by and grateful to @live_life_safe for their dedicated efforts spotlighting stalking - demanding it's tackled effectively and that victims receive the treatment and support they need. Looking forward to next year!.
@CommissionerDA @NHSEngland @lynnwoolsey1 @theRCN @GSTTnhs @BraggRhianon @KerryDaynes Our final key speaker is the @VictimsComm Baroness Newlove, who will discuss how fundamental multi-agency working is to supporting victims of all crime.

New @CPSUK stats show a small but welcome drop in victims withdrawing after charge. Amid record delays, this underlines the importance of victim services in keeping people engaged. But many face closure due to funding cuts and rising costs. My statement👇

Tagging is meant to give victims reassurance – that conditions will be enforced, boundaries respected and an offender’s whereabouts known. Delays shake victims' trust and undermine their sense of safety. These failures must not be repeated.
‘Someone is going to get hurt’. In this exclusive undercover investigation, Dispatches finds out that high-risk and violent criminals are left unmonitored for up to two months due to a chaotic tagging system.

The @RSylvesterTimes Crime and Justice Commission report is out. It lays bare a criminal justice system in crisis. It is, sadly, all too familiar in places - but that should not distract from the weight of its argument: change must come. My reflections in today’s @thetimes 👇.
🔺NEW: Shabana Mahmood, the justice secretary, suggests that ‘echoes’ of the year-long inquiry’s recommendations could be included in sentencing and court reforms .

I welcome the government’s pledge to boost funding for specialist therapeutic support, including for adult survivors of child sexual abuse. Doubling national funding shows real intent – though victims will need a long-term, sustained commitment in the upcoming Spending Review.
The Government’s update on IICSA includes some welcome commitments, especially around increased support for adult survivors and long overdue legal reforms. Read NAPAC’s full statement: #NAPAC #SurvivorVoices #PolicyToPractice
