What people fail to realize when criticizing Mothra and Rodan's Heisei portrayals by comparing them to their appearances in Mothra vs. Godzilla and GTTHM is that they're actually based on their appearances in their solo films.

The Heisei series' design principles are overall a return to form to the style of the earlier Showa era of the 50s and early 60s compared to the late 60s early 70s. The bulk of the monsters recaptures the weight and power of the original Godzilla.
