This! A lot is made, rightly, of BBC LR providing companionship, but Davie et al are also blind to its importance in scrutiny, local democracy, holding power to account, community cohesion and frankly as a last bastion of trust in the BBC.

This! A lot is made, rightly, of BBC LR providing companionship, but Davie et al are also blind to its importance in scrutiny, local democracy, holding power to account, community cohesion and frankly as a last bastion of trust in the BBC.
It's dangerous for democracy when the media doffs a cap to power - the BBC withdrawing resource from local radio has left a news vacuum in many parts of the country, where stories go unreported and individuals are not held to account.
