The mineral zircon can be dated using the U-Pb system and its trace element composition helps distinguish magmatic processes or metamorphic origins. In HED meteorites, zircons reveal prolonged thermal metamorphism along with many shocked zircons recording impact events.

. using U-Pb radiometric dating & trace elements in tiny zircons in the meteorites. HED meteorites are differentiated meteorites thought to represent the mantle, basaltic crust, & surface regolith of a small parent body from the early solar system, potentially asteroid 4 Vesta.

Recent research highlight: Melanie Barboni & Madeline Marquardt of ASU used UCLA’s ims1290 ion microprobe to put better age constraints on magmatic, metamorphic, and impact events on the parent body of the Howardite-Eucrite-Diogenite (HED) meteorites
