understanding of tectonics on Earth and other planets, Prof. Yin was a beloved role model to scientists everywhere. In our department specifically, he served as the backbone of our EPSS summer field program, enthusiastically mentoring our undergraduates for over 30 years (2/4).

Professor An Yin, Distinguished Professor of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences, passed away suddenly at the age of 64 on July 12, 2023 while instructing undergraduate field camp in eastern California’s White Mountains. An intellectual giant in geology who shaped our (1/4)

We are devastated by the unexpected loss of Professor An Yin. Prof. Yin was the heart and soul of our department, a dedicated teacher who served his students with unfailing loyalty. We are focused on supporting his family and students and will share more information soon.

Han Bao and Liuwei Xu–investigated these rare events, finding that the violent quakes were over twice more common than previously thought, and more likely to occur along strike-slip faults like California’s San Andreas Fault (pictured). Read more at .(2/2).

The findings suggest that disaster planning efforts consider whether nearby faults are capable of producing this type of temblor, which can be more damaging.
