Journal club thoughts from the students:.1) How do we reconcile that other microglia-deficient models draw different conclusions? Could the remaining immune cells be compensating?.2) Why do these brains have synchronous neuron firing, but brain organoids lacking microglia do not?.
Mice lacking microglia (Csf1r∆FIRE/∆FIRE) have normal.-synapse number and maturation.-seizure susceptibility and hippocampal-prefrontal cortex coherence.-segregation of inputs into the lateral geniculate nucleus.-neuronal and astrocytic gene expression.

My feed has been absolutely dead for 2 weeks, which means all my friends have migrated to BlueSky and it's finally sticking. You can find me @tylerjwenzel.com. I’ll be back here only if the algorithm improves discoverability. Until then, this account just cross posts.

The last 14 days have been a whirlwind. From learning about the neurochemistry of mental illness at the @ISN_society Flagship school, to coming back to 🇨🇦 to start my own lab. Details to come, but I am looking for curious people who want to learn both cool & classic techniques.

I think there is a good chance that my favorite talk at #CSHLGlia might go to Lori Conlan at NIH (the self-identified not glia expert 😱!). Super funny, but also looking at mentor-mentee relationships through a generational lens has given me a lot of ideas for EDI training.
