Wow, amazing---my book is finally out!!!
We are long overdue to have an open, honest debate about the Gates Foundation. Let's show the world--and the marketplace--that there is a real appetite for critical reporting on the 'good billionaires!'
1/ Months ago, I was asked to be a co-reporter on this story. I declined b/c the
#GatesFoundation
was a funder, which I knew would make it impossible to rigorously examine Gates's role in Covax. This story is a case study in the perils of Gates-funded journalism. 🧵Read on & RT:
How did Bill Gates come to secure so much political influence over public health in India? By playing politics, of course. Watch Gates gamely genuflect to Prime Minister Modi in what is, essentially, a political campaign ad.
"Philanthropy" by Bill Gates
Looks like Bill Gates has taken over the baton from Akshay Kumar for Elections 2024 !! The man knows how to capture audience imaginations, from Big, Modi ji is going Bigger with Bill Gates that now the World will listen to this interview ..
BIG NEWS: I'm writing a book about
#BillGates
& the
#GatesFoundation
.
#TheGoodBillionaire
My book takes on one of the most powerful & secretive people/institutions in the world. And I need your help to write it: documents, intel, stories, sources, whistleblowers. Please RT!
Must-read investigation: GatesFoundation put 3 billion rupees into Indian education, pushing initiatives that 1) don't work 2) demoralize & roboticize teachers 3) drive student segregation.
#FamiliarFailures
So amazing to see news rooms holding Gates accountable!
Big news to share—my book is available for pre-order
“The Bill Gates Problem” investigates one the world’s most powerful, least scrutinized political actors.
Please retweet & please pre-order!

15/ I wrote about the damaging effects of Gates's funding of journalism in
@CJR
last year. If you start to follow the money, you realize Gates's financial influence is everywhere---NYT, Guardian, BBC, AlJazeera...
Because Gates is not an elected representative or public official, the details of his far-reaching influence over the
#pandemic
—and his financial investments—have largely eluded public scrutiny. My newest investigation in
@thenation
Before engaging with
#BillGates
’s big ideas on
#climatechange
, we should first ask: Why is this guy talking? In his new book, Gates's blindspots on race, equity, justice & *democracy* are stunning. So are his conflicts of interest and carbon emissions.
The GatesFoundation aims to help the global poor, but 88% of its charitable dollars go to the wealthiest, whitest nations. In
@thenation
, I talk to those who want to “de-colonize” the world’s most powerful charity & those who want to dismantle it. Read on:

Two decades ago, Bill Gates was among the most reviled people on Earth, despised as a bully & monopolist. Through philanthropy he completely reformed his reputation.
His reputation has changed. But Bill Gates hasn't.
I explain in my new book:
Alternative title for this (great!) new academic article:

My investigations into
@gatesfoundation
compelled
@nytimes
to belatedly disclose *six* financial conflicts in its reporting. Let's dive deep into journalism's Bill-Gates problem in this webinar w/ Association of Health Care Journalists, Friday 1pm!
@ACHJ
Bill and Melinda Gates are not the magazine-cover power couple we’ve been led to believe, one more crack in the deep mythology that is the Gates Foundation. Call it a business or a bank or a political organization before you call it a charity
Removed from paywall! The GatesFoundation website is inundated with images of the global poor and rhetoric about diversity/equity. Yet 88% of its charitable dollars go to the whitest, wealthiest nations. Helping the rich, or helping the poor? Plz read/RT!
Do GatesFoundation's surprisingly large donations to journalism/news ($250m+) shape how journalists cover Gates? What we know about the foundation? Recipients of Gates’ largesse mostly say, 'nothing to see here.' In
@cjr
, I talk to
@nytimes
@NPR
@Poynter
18/ An oft-quoted criticism raised around philanthropy is whether it is doing more harm than good. Gates's money is clearly causing great harm in journalism because it's distorting what we know about the pandemic & how we think about the next one. It's revising history.
Amazing to see
@Nature
publish such a great review of my book: "Schwab’s excellent exposé of hyper-billionaire ‘myths’ could yet help to catalyse political murmurations towards more collective ends."
5/ This editorial decision---to minimize and obscure the very significant role the Gates Foundation played in the failures of Covax ---aligns perfectly with
@TBIJ
's funder, the Gates Foundation. Unbelievably,
@TBIJ
did not clearly disclose its financial conflict to readers
"Bill Gates has continually downplayed the role of proven, safe renewable energy technology in decarbonizing our economy, playing up instead more dangerous and risky technology like geoengineering and nuclear"--
@MichaelEMann
2/ Co-reported by
@statnews
/
@TBIJ
, the story amplifies a message that Gates had an extremely small role in the failures of Covax (to send covid vaccines to the global poor). This is misleading. False, really. And it hurts the ability of independent journalists to tell the truth
4/ The article doesn't mention Gates until the 83rd paragraph. And it only reports 4 graphs on Gates---incl a quote from Gates. Again, this is a story about a failed covid initiative that Gates played an outsize role in leading/shaping. Why would
@TBIJ
bury Gates's role?
Hey,
@NPR
. You just put out an 8-min interview w/
#BillGates
promoting his new book on
#climatechange
. I didn't hear any tough questions. And I didn't didn't hear NPR disclose the millions of dollars it takes from
the
#GatesFoundation
. What gives?
Bill Gates has avoided billions of dollars in taxes through charity. These are tax dollars that could help battle
#CoronavirusOutbreak
. Is Gates recent, modest $100m donation to corona deserving of thanks and exaltation, or critical reflection? Read on:
3/ The
@TBIJ
story offers useful reporting about the failures in Covax---unaccountable power, missing risk analysis, country-club mindset. This is all true---yet also deeply misleading when placed in a context where Gates's very important role in these failures is obscured
fwiw, Bill Gates is very aggressively hoarding wealth. He's worth $130b today, and his wealth has dramatically increased during his tenure as, supposedly, the most generous philanthropist on Earth.
Philanthropy today lets ultra-wealthy donors look generous while hoarding wealth — and avoiding solving our root problems.
📆 This Wednesday, join
@TimothyWSchwab
,
@AmyTheSchill
, and
@bdevaan
of
@inequalityorg
in unpacking how to fix this. Register now:
6/ The Gates Foundation has given (at least) $1,068,169 to
@TBIJ
"to report regularly and in-depth on global health security issues." That's a huge sum for any newsroom & appears to be more than half of TBIJ's annual budget.
13/ I don't believe Gates told
@TBIJ
what to write. I think
@TBIJ
implicitly, if subconsciously, knew they had to find a way to tell this story that didn't target their funder. The biasing effects of financial conflicts are complex but very real and reliable
In recent weeks, the news media has gone from lapdog to bloodhound in its reporting on
#BillGates
, but we're still not getting to the really big questions about Gates's power---and abuses of power. My newest in
@thenation
:
It's kind of funny. Bill Gates started a philanthropy, which donates millions of dollars to CNN. He then goes on CNN to talk about all the important things he's doing.
How is this journalism?
How is this charity?
Why are our tax dollars subsidizing Gates's self promotion?
What's improving health outcomes in low-income countries? What stands in the way of global development? And will AI be as important as the Internet?
My conversation w/
@BillGates
, from today's show:
7/
@TBIJ
chose to obscure their financial conflict of interest, hiding at at the very bottom of a 5500-word article (no one reads to the very end)----instead of disclosing inside the article, the first time Gates is mentioned, as is customary in journalism
Sweeping (& flattering) reintroduction to
#BillGates
.
@IronicProfessor
&
@NathanJRobinson
argue that if we're going to indulge in the cult of personality around Gates, atleast let's be honest: He's not a virtuous philanthropist. He's a dogged monopolist
11/ Disclosure isn't enough. Journalists cannot honestly report on companies/actors that directly/heavily fund their newsrooms. The Society of Professional Journalists (& common sense) says, journalists should, in the first place, avoid financial conflt of interest
@spj_tweets
8/ After I contacted
@TBIJ
, they acknowledged their failure to clearly disclose their financial conflict. Whoops. They corrected the disclosure, which now appears at first reference to Gates. Day late, dollar short. That disclosure needed to be there Day 1---not Day 6.
Not surprised that
@gatesfoundation
didn't respond to
@thewire_in
's major, 3-part investigation showing the foundation's anti-democratic infl in Indian food policy. Gates's refusal to engage with criticism shows it is not accountable. And not legitimate.

#TheBillGatesProblem
Gates's political advocacy (philanthropy) usually aligns w/ his financial interests. These conflicts of interest are recipe for public distrust, whether its reduced meat consumption or vaccines. Journos compound this prob by letting Gates play expert & ignoring his conflicts
Bill Gates has quietly become the largest farmland owner in America. At the same time, he’s become a leading voice in the push for “synthetic meat.”
Here’s the story of how Bill Gates is waging a war on meat to make millions - and hiding behind “climate change” to do it.
Love this headline from
@the_hindu
:
"The art of Gatescrashing democracy"
Around the world, a major reappraisal of the Gates Foundation is underway-----amazing to see the news media opening up a public debate about this undemocratic institution
10/ Unfortunately, the ethical failures are endemic.
@statnews
,
@qz
,
@el_pais
&
@Ojo_Publico
also published the
@TBIJ
story on their websites, pushing it out to their zillions of readers----without disclosing that the GatesFoundation helped fund the story
16/ In a follow-up story I wrote,
@nytimes
acknowledged its own repeated failures to manage financial conflicts of interest in its reporting on the Gates Foundation. The outlet issued corrections, but whose going to see these belated disclosures? No one.
There is now widespread agreement that “Covax” has failed in its mission to deliver covid vaccines to the global poor. Here’s me on
@Slate
’s podcast arguing that we have to understand the failures of Covax as also the failures of the
@GatesFoundation
:
9/ Gates's funding appears to account for virtually all of
@TBIJ
's reporting budget on global health, including the Covax story. The only other listed funders of TBIJ's global health reporting are Gates-funded groups
@ejcnet
and
@VitalStrat
.
12/ The job of journalists is to hold the powerful to account. This means following the money and challenging the powerful forces behind Covax.
@TBIJ
doesn't get there, and the lack of courage in its reporting is stunning. And demoralizing.
My newest in
@thenation
! With the
#GatesFoundation
mired in allegations of misconduct, my sources ask: why aren't state & federal investigators taking a close look? Taxpayers heavily subsidize
#BillionairePhilanthropy
, so we all have skin in the game
"Although [the] website keeps track of how much money was raised, it is nearly impossible to tell exactly where all of it went." Anyone who has seriously investigated the Gates Foundation arrives at the same conclsion: you can only follow the money so far
Over the last year, I published 20,000 words about the
#GatesFoundation
in
@thenation
,
@cjr
&
@bmj_latest
. It's some of the only investigative journalism ever written about the world's most powerful charity. Stay tuned and read on....LINKS here:
19/ If we really want to understand the failures of the pandemic response, and think about a better way forward, we need to think very hard about the Gates Foundation's failed leadership.
@TBIJ
's reporting makes it hard to do that. It encourages us to do the very opposite
#FunFact
:
@thenation
nominated my series on the
#GatesFoundation
for the
@PulitzerPrizes
. I didn’t win but I still want to give a shout-out to my editors, sources & readers who helped me put a critical lens on
#BillGates
at a time when most newsrooms were profiling his good deeds
17/ The
@TBIJ
episode is really painful for me because, as a lowly freelancer, being part of a large, collaborative reporting project like this would have been a a big break & really important opportunity for my career. I can't imagine how much money went into this investigation
Throughout my book, I argue Gates's funding is often causing more harm than good. No where is this perhaps more apparent than Gates's funding journalism.
My solution? Journalists should stop taking Gates's money. Right now.
Ch. 8 of my book goes deep:
My investigations into
@gatesfoundation
compelled
@nytimes
to belatedly disclose *six* financial conflicts in its reporting. Let's dive deep into journalism's Bill-Gates problem in this webinar w/ Association of Health Care Journalists, Friday 1pm!
@ACHJ
Melinda French Gates isn't simply (or nobly) trying to expand representation in Congress. She's using her vast wealth to decide WHICH women get the opportunity to run---those that "represent my values." This is private power, not public good
Gates uses his wealth & influence to meet directly with the world’s most powerful elected leaders, securing billions of taxpayer dollars—*our money*—to subsidize his narrow & often wrong-headed solutions to social problems 8/
Thank you, BillGates, for reading my book,
#TheBillGatesProblem
! His (non)response in
@DailyMailUK
? He says he is "committed" to solving problems.
1) These aren't your probs to solve 2) your solutions create probs 3) please put down that child, Melinda
The
@Gatesfoundation
now pouring money into investigative journalism in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Tanzania, Lesotho, Swaziland and South Africa. I guarantee that no recipients will investigate the Gates Foundation
After I emailed & tweeted
@NPR
---and hundreds of Twitter peeps liked/RTed (thank you!)----NPR has issued a correction, belatedly disclosing its financial ties to the
#GatesFoundation
.
Small victory for transparency....but the underlying financial conflict remains unresolved
Hey,
@NPR
. You just put out an 8-min interview w/
#BillGates
promoting his new book on
#climatechange
. I didn't hear any tough questions. And I didn't didn't hear NPR disclose the millions of dollars it takes from
the
#GatesFoundation
. What gives?
This is not normal and not right. FOIAed emails from
#AnthonyFauci
show he kept in close contact with
#BillGates
---a billionaire with no medical training---about how to get vaccines to global poor. The project has failed abominably.
#Accountability
#PPP
It gets so much worse!
The
@gatesfoundation
--a "platinum sponsor" of this corporate nutrition conference--has a $500 million+ invested in food companies like Coca-Cola Femsa, Unilever, PepsiCo, Hormel, Proctor & Gamble.
Conflicts of interest on top of conflicts of interest!
14/ So why would the Gates-funded
@TBIJ
invite me---a reporter who has won journalism awards for putting a critical lens on Gates--- to be a co-reporter? My guess is that they had good intentions, but they didn't fully realize their constitutional limitations.
Very odd that NYT article on Biden's climate change plan leads with
#BillGates
. The news media's normalization/institutionalization of Gates political power really is stunning. Just b/c Gates calls himself a leader on climate change does not make it true
Bill & Melinda are worth a combined $144b today. Last year--- Jan 1,2021---they were worth $120b. According to the Washington Post, the takeaway is: these are most generous people in the world
Thank you
@BillGates
for sending a copy of your new book. I fully agree that we must act on
#COVID19
’s lessons and innovate so that we can deliver swift, equitable health solutions to prevent the next pandemic.
@gatesfoundation
The
@Gatesfoundation
puts millions of dollars into
@The74
, which then publishes "exclusive" interviews with Bill Gates, presenting him as an expert/humanitarian.
Is this journalism? Is this charity? Or is this oligarchy--a rich guy co-opting the news?
An insider told me
@gatesfoundation
staff are widely reading advanced copies of my forthcoming book---which they shouldn't have & didn't pay for.
@BillGates
loves intellectual property, but he won't pay me for mine? The price is $30, bro. Each copy.
The
@nytimes
gives
@billgates
a platform to play expert on climate change....again? The job of journalism is to challenge illegitimate & unaccountable power, not normalize it.
This is a major failure of journalism & a major threat to climate change
This article reads like something BillGates's PR team came up with.
@RollingStone
pushes the narrative that Gates was a totally innocent man duped by criminal mastermind
#JeffreyEpstein
Seriously, at what point do just call this kind of reporting misinformation? Bill Gates is becoming richer over time, not poorer. That fact must be front & center in any news story flogging his "plan" to give away all his wealth
The
@Telegraph
calls my book an "extraordinary and detailed work of investigative journalism" (thank you!)...but also "doomed to fail" (huh?).
Not disclosed by
@Telegraph
: the newspaper receives millions of dollars from
@gatesfoundation
. Odd omission
The real story is actually much more complex. Bill Gates is not simply giving away money. He’s buying influence. He uses charity to put his hands on the levers of public policy, shaping how we medicate, educate & feed the world 7/
If you were so concerned about a global pandemic, why didn't you marshal your $135 billion personal fortune to prepare us?
You are a philanthropist, right? In the business of giving away money, not hoarding it...?
I Never Trusted Bill Gates, Nor Should You via
@DisInfoChron
While leading a Senate investigation, I tracked a corrupt pharmaceutical executive right into the lobby of the much-vaunted Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation—Bill Gates did nothing.
This
@thewire_in
investigation begs three questions: 1) Should we allow
@gatesfoundation
to push "biofortified" rice on poor Indians? 2) how do we deal w/ the controversy, conflicts of interest & apparent health problems in this techno-solution? 3) Is Gates doing harm or good?
NEW series in Wire. Part 1
What happens when Govt tries to solve malnutrition by giving fortified rice?
"Can we eat it, when birds don't?" Adivasi farmers ask can they trust fortified rice when it lacks all qualities, texture, goodness of whole grains
Thank you
@joerogan
&
@mtaibbi
for profiling my

investigation into the GatesFoundation's massive funding of journalism. These 'donations' have helped one of the world's most powerful people/institutions avoid journalistic scrutiny
@joeroganhq
This story is at the very top of the landing page for the NYT's website right now.
NYT's fascination with wealth--and the wealthy--is a major editorial problem
In my book, I have an entire section on NPR because it takes so much money from the Gates Foundation ($25 million) and b/c it is such a reliable amplifier of Gates's good deeds/intentions. This excerpt comes from an NPR interview claiming to ask "tough" questions of Bill Gates:
It is bizarre that the NYT would give Gates 2000 words of prime real estate to play expert on pandemics. I thought journalism was supposed to afflict the comforted and comfort the afflicted. As always, the rules don't apply
I’ve just learned that
@Twitter
has suspended another user for well informed totally above-the-board critical commentary about
#BillGates
. If you’ve ever been suspended, please DM or email me
Given the Gates Foundation's influential role in the pandemic, why aren't we talking about the foundation's investments in companies working on COVID vaccines/therapies/diagnostics? Politicians & scientists have to clearly disclose....but not Gates?
As journalists take on financial ties to the subjects of their reporting (like the
@gatesfoundation
), where is the editorial oversight? My new investigation in
@CJR
reveals serial probs w/ unmanaged conflicts of interest
@nytimes
and beyond. Read on:
The

I thought

More than fifty news outlets covered my book, "The Bill Gates Problem," and my publisher sent advanced copies to multiple
@NPR
desks. No response. Just saying, if NPR is going to amplify Bill & Melinda's books, shouldn't they let listeners know there's another side to the story?
In my book, I have an entire section on NPR because it takes so much money from the Gates Foundation ($25 million) and b/c it is such a reliable amplifier of Gates's good deeds/intentions. This excerpt comes from an NPR interview claiming to ask "tough" questions of Bill Gates:
Bill Gates apparently believes that poor nations in which his foundation works are 'unsophisticated' hunter-gatherer societies that depend on wild edibles. He doesn't know farmers have spent thousands of years selectively breeding their crops for yield/pest resistance/taste/etc?
Gates either doesn't understand GMO technology or is incredibly disingenuous. “All crops in the West are GMOs?” Meaning what? That any crop that has undergone any kind of kind of breeding is a GMO? By that definition, essentially all crops--everywhere---are GMOs. Misinformation
Entire corners of public health, for example, are now determined by what Bill Gates thinks. A sober, rational assessment would call this what it is: oligarchy. Gates wields undemocratic power through his obscene wealth. 10/
Did you know that humanitarianism is minting one-percent-ers? A short story 🧵 that starts w/ the Gates Foundation’s payroll—look at all these millionaires!
#TheBillGatesProblem

Ladies and gentlemen, our humble humanitarian-in-chief:
“I’m the person who’s doing the most on climate in terms of the innovation and in how we can square multiple goals,” Gates said at the New York Times’ Climate Forward Summit.
The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation
@IHME_UW
found that improving trust could make a critical difference when it comes to ending this pandemic and preventing the next one.
I feel like I've read 1000 news stories about how Bill Gates doesn't want to spoil his children---and that instead of enriching his heirs he is donating his wealth to help poor people
The GatesFoundation is promoting its commitment to diversity with its new board of trustees, who oversee its campaign to help poor people in the global south. Here's the board by the numbers--you decide: 50% billionaires, 66% white, 66% men, 100% based in the global north.
We’ve built an incredible organization in the
@gatesfoundation
over two decades and I’m excited about the next chapter in our history. Our new board members will help us build a world where every person has an opportunity to lead a healthy, productive life
As we say goodbye to 2021, I’m thankful to all the brilliant & brave people whose stories & struggles made me see that we're not just in a covid pandemic but also a colonizer pandemic. There's no vaccine, but we’ve got diagnostics & treatment. ICYMI:
“The people I meet in so many countries in Africa and Asia want to live in the United States—-because of capitalism"
Serious question: why do we give the richest people on Earth an uncritical platform to speak on behalf of the global poor?
