But interestingly the majority of Gazans who oppose Oct. 7 have a lower voting propensity, so Hamas would win hypothetical elections based on the pole.

Hamas's policies are most unpopular with the people who suffer the most for it, makes sense.

Interesting that the popularity of Hamas in Gaza has gone way down, but not in West Bank. I remember there was popularity gap before but it's gotten way larger.

Perhaps they define free speech as only relevant to non-political speech? But governments rarely regulate non-political speech.

I really don't understand how Europeans say this "you can have free speech unless you support my rival political parties" seems obviously wrong by definition to an American. But to them there is a different definition of free speech that I guess is non-political speech only.

It makes me wonder what if thr first industrial states had gibe communist, perhaps around the 1840s uprisings. In a world with few capitalist states, the performance gap between command and free economies would be hidden.

Most people find the argument for capitalism confusing, counterintuitive, and kind of icky (greed is good), but capitalism succeeded because it delivered higher standards of living than communism even if voters didn't understand why.

One theory is that having independent tribal political units allows them to act autonomously, and many nontribal Palestinians feel the same but cannot act alone. That seems plausible, particularly in Gaza where repression is fierce.

During the Crusades Bedouine also sided more often with the Franks, but of course those were alliances against the Turkish invaders who threatened to consume bedouine pasture and water.

Interesting trend of tribal leaders and more bedouin communities breaking with the PLO project. It parallels the 1970s divide between Jordan (more tribal and more bedu), which was more interested in peace and deescalation than the PLO. A similar dynamic in Gaza recently.

BREAKING: “The Emirate of Hebron shall recognize the State of Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people," write five Hebron sheikhs, backed by 16 more. This unveils a peace initiative they've been working on with Israel's Nir Barkat since February, meeting at his home.
