most US thinking on Sudan is driven by opinions formed in the 90s-2000s under Bashir. There's no current understanding of how political, religious, diplomatic or social dynamics evolved in the last 30 years. How can we ever think we will get it right if we are so far out of date?

China withdrawing from Sudan's oil sector is a bigger deal than is being acknowledged. Forget the $2billion/year it brings in, China was once Sudan's biggest protector because of oil. Shows how much has changed in 20 years that they arent relevant today.
