My notifications tab is absolutely flooded with spam right now, would probably take 10+ hours to read through it for the interesting messages. So apologies but I have to bail. If we were in the middle of a conversation please tag or PM me in a day or two to resume.

Practical utility is the obvious answer, people need to be able to buy things worth around $1. But that doesn't work as an explanation when countries can have multiple currencies, like how the US has both dollars and cents.

Why do fiat currencies all seem to top out at around the same nominal value? There are currencies that are 0.001% of $1 USD, but the most valuable one in the world is the Dinar at only $3.26.

I just changed my email address on my bank account, which caused them to lock my account under the theory that someone could have gained access to my old email. Then told me at that same email to call them and say "this is Isaac, it's a real change", in order to unlock it.

Always worth noticing who actually cares about honestly communicating data to the public, vs. those who only pretend to care. https://t.co/jhjLnu7yR6

Context: I had posted this image as a quote of Elon saying Grokipedia is better than Wikipedia.

Wait, this isn't Grokipedia. This is Grokpedia. WHY ARE THOSE DIFFERENT THINGS. Deleting.

Not the moms' fault, to be clear. Previous Air Canada flight was delayed. (I know because I was also one of the late passengers. I got on too, freeloading on sympathy for the moms.)

Air Canada just lied to everyone on board this plane about a nonexistent nose wheel steering issue necessitating them to go back to the gate. (Actual reason was to let on some sympathetic moms who had gotten there late and were crying about not getting to see their kids.)

Nearly every time I see a high Uber price, I open the Lyft app on my phone, wait 10+ seconds for it to load, and when it inevitably fails, shrug and order the Uber.

No they have it correct. It's illegal to build new housing, so if you do it you will indeed be increasing crime.

We need cancel culture but for graphs. Everyone who put their name on this website should be made to post a public apology.
Obviously on some level ~~attention~~ matters but the problem here is that Democrats like to pay attention to weak electoral performers, not that Democrats do well by attracting large social media followings. https://t.co/adi8LlSSSt

@haveibeenpwned Moving up to 6-digit PINs, I discovered something amazing. Only 999,999 of them have been breached! (Seriously.) I won't be sharing the last one as it's obviously extremely valuable. Buyers are free to reach out and we can talk price.

Some websites still require 4-digit PINs, which 1password will helpfully flag as insecure. But how insecure? I downloaded the entire @haveibeenpwned database and checked the breach frequency of each PIN. I can now definitively say that the safest pin is 0639. For maximum

I just told Claude to optimize a function it wrote me, and it proudly reported back that it used a cleverer search algorithm to change the time from O(n) to O(n + m).

I love how the Republican side doesn't need a job center because they actually have a functioning economy

This is a completely unsubstantiated belief. We have never observed there being nothing, and so we have precisely zero data on how often something comes from it.

Easiest disproof of the conspiracy theories ever. The government *clearly* doesn't particularly want me to take this vaccine. I'm trying!

Canada: Sends me an email offering free booster shots; great! Attempt to book an appointment online: "You're in the queue." Tab away for a few minutes, tab back... sigh.
